A question of aptitude and attitudeJavier Díaz-Guardiola.
It is worth bearing in mind that sometimes it is not so much a ques-
tion of aptitude (that as well), but attitude. «Let the cobbler stick to his
last», goes the popular saying. Well, this is indeed what Mustang and
the other brands that are included in the umbrella organisation do. It
is the result of «aptitude». However, why can’t a company -and this
would always be desirable– get involved with this society for which it
works? Why can’t it become interested in culture? Why can’t it be consci-
entious and support the young artistic promises who open the way
in the system? That is attitude. And that is how the Fundación Pascual
Ros Aguilar first began (as a tribute to the founder of the company)
and, within it, the Mustang Art Gallery (MAG).
Its mechanism is as simple as it is revolutionary (which is not very
common around here): A company (whose ultimate objective is to
make money) that starts a sustainable, contemporary and responsible
project; that is well aware of the fact that a client relationship can-
not be a mere economic transaction; that tries to get involved with
society. And, in this way, it uses its own head office as a laboratory at
the service of plastic art creation. Everything at Mustang is eye-catch-
ing: from its building (designed by the architects José Juan Fructuoso
and José Amorós), to its location (in an industrial estate of Elche), the
layout of the space (in a policy where transparency prevails) or its
decor. It is flooded with light and filled with plants (this might be a
silly remark, but one that I think is necessary), where the work of the
artists with whom the company has collaborated hangs on the walls
of the offices and meeting rooms: from Carlos Coronas to Ana Soler,
from Laramascoto to Nelo Vinuesa… And finally, it has to be made
clear that these are not acquisitions or exchanges of cooperation, but
real purchases from artists that have been supported and included in
the «small» big collection that Mustang is building on. It’s a question
of attitude.
Here, right in the heart of the firm, for all to see, is the exhibition area
of the MAG art gallery, run by Juan Fuster. In spite of its name, it is not
a gallery. Let’s just say that it is a non-profit project based on con-
temporary art, promoted by the foundation, whose purpose is to be
the link between modern-day creation and the general public (and
for the same reason, it is not intended to be transgressive, but rather
educational and a mode of artistic expression). This is how fertile
ground for art is produced together with other agents and institu-
tions of the region’s sector.
The obvious results of this venture are the exhibitions, close to six a
year, which are organised there or the significant role of the Foun-
dation’s art grant known as the Beca Puénting, which puts final year
students from Alicante University in touch with the working world
and the job market (displaying their work at MAG and the JustMad
contemporary art fair). The latest beneficiary of this initiative was
the young Saúl Sellés. Yet there are more: I have been privileged
(along with Sabrina Amrani, Ana García Alarcón, Javier Duero, Ana
Soler and Eugenio Ampudia) to form part of the jury of the Ist edition
of Confluencias.
For two days in October, thanks to the AVVAC (Visual Artists Associa-
tion of Valencia, Alicante and Castellón), the Universidad Miguel
Hernández and Mustang, I was able to meet in person the budding
artists who will contribute a lot to the national art scene in the very
near future (I am now thinking of Ana Pastor, Iker Lemos, Olga Diego,
Marco Ranieri and Daniel Barceló, and I know that there are many
more that I have unjustly left out). Confluencias was launched (and
we hope that in time many other equally intense editions will follow)
as a meeting place for plastic artists and professionals of the art
world to exhibit their work eye to eye and without hierarchies. The
event ended with a round-table discussion in which everyone in-
volved (and by that I mean members of the public who took part as
well) showed a passion for art and an eagerness to do things. This is
a question of aptitude and attitude.

pone en marcha un proyecto sostenible, contemporáneo y responsable;

van con The Mamas and the Papas.
pintados a mano o pulcramente mecanografiados.

«We are what we put on the sleeve ofour audio tapes.»by Ignacio Ruiz.
Art in the 20th Century wouldn’t exist without the tin can. The use of
the first objects made with a copper base can be dated back to the
Roman Empire, but what interests us is when it became continents
of oil painting. These commercial paint tins allowed the plain air pain-
ting of the impressionists, the excess of material painting of art from
the 40’s and everything that has happened in the painting world since
then. The tin can has been more important in contemporary art than
all European art critics.
In the same way the cassette tape can be considered one of the most
artistic expressions that exists. From when they were popularized in
the 60’s mix tape, the compilation tapes of different authors, has ac-
companied the modern world towards the reaffirmation of the most
diverse personalities. Beginning from the 80’s, what already comes tin-
ned from the first moment preset by the record company, turns into
desktop publishing thanks to the chromium tapes and its better sound
quality. A universal amount of young people and adults could create
their musical universe combining Kiss with Uriah Heep or Donovan
with The Mamas and the Papas or Kiss with Donovan, who knows.
The tapes represent the freedom of musical creation for those who
don’t create music, and it’s so developed that Geoffrey O’Brien has ca-
lled this phenomenon the way of art most practiced in the United Sta-
tes. But it wasn’t an exclusively American phenomenon and it’s proven
by the development in Spain. The format and its transportability ended
up transforming the support itself in a medium of expression and the
paper changed from showing the chosen song lists to became the base
of collages with group photos, pictures, and paints related to the
music style or small pictorial pieces. Once stored, small libraries were
created with spines painted by hand or neatly typed. Nothing has done
so much for the reaffirmation of youth like the cassette tapes.
The sound wasn’t always the best at one moment which the main
source for the recording was the radio. You had to be precise to avoid
commercials or the voice of the disc jockey, but the quality standards
were different from today. The arrival of the CD continued the pro-
cess of selecting your own music up until now with the Spotify lists.
While it still allows you to use the support like plastic media, the total
digitalization process has eliminated the do-it-yourself way, it has es-
thetically been unified and it has produced a clear sound, at the ex-
pense of those qualities that today replay in our heads such as the
sound of rock & roll. Any digital file is at our reach in minutes for free
and that has changed our way of understanding music.
And our way of understanding music has changed our lives. The re-
cords and the cassettes force you to stand up from time to time, to
look for songs, to find the exact point of a song on a record… Today
the mp3 players produce music constantly in a loop, random or not,
that the ritual of selecting songs has been eliminated. This music, al-
ways good and always endless, dissolves itself to the lack of protocol
pauses of switching sides.
The great successes of Eduardo Balanza are chants of the gas station
culture in which we were brought up in, to those trimmed photos of Dis-
coplay with the disc cover of The Clash or Boney M. An exaggerated re-
consideration of the format that created an universal art, an extremely
personal culture and at the same time so diffused like one’s own music.

No obs-
Tiny pieces of history stream along the edges of the stalls. Inherited
from a continuous turning of the centuries, these fragments of cho-
rus, voices, and poses seem to twist and turn to leap onto the stage.
Indeed, it is in spasmodic ecstasy that they hurl themselves into the
scene. The remnants of stories steer towards a narration between the
body’s space and celebratory time.
Componer en el tiempo (Compose in time) is a staging exercise in
which the body becomes the actual scene of the vital, historical and
performative act. In this way the body is dressed in a multiplicity of
tales. As Hélène Cixous said herself, «a woman is also another woman.
A woman is more than a women, she is manlike too». «A woman is a
group of women». But what’s more, this woman is the transformation
into a new nomadic character that moves along the edges of the cor-
poreal shapes twisting her physicality into a becoming-machine, be-
coming-animal, becoming-woman. Wherefore the body that emerges
from between the drop scenes is exhibited as a mysterious animal,
the PVC gynoid or the story telling creatures. Moreover, the body is
inscribed in history and yet it also tells the story: Nous portons l'his-
toire de nos corps («We bear the story of our bodies») –states one of
the sculptures from the collection Corps Multiples (Multiple Bodies)
by Hélène Crécent. However, this body –just like history– is fragmen-
tary. Hence, the body exhibited by Crécent is not a body in pieces, but
rather one that is made-of-pieces.
Its pieces are corporeal deconstructions. The characters are formed
from fragments: a heel, breasts, buttocks, a knife, arms or hair. Frag-
ments joining together for an instant to create a being that is already
mutating into another. This paradox is well identified with the chorus
of the song Modern Style by Jean Bart, and as Crécent told me one day
in her studio, while she was thinking about her work and life: La vie est
faite de morceaux qui ne se joignent pas («Life is made up of pieces
that do not join together»).
Therefore, the body on the stage gains strength from a ballet of dolls
that move at a certain time when the visibility of women is vindicated
in an era in which they are still in the stalls waiting to applaud the in-
expugnable tale told. Nevertheless, the mission of the female artists
right through the 20th century was to focus on acquiring experience.
Indeed it is the celebratory time of the commendation in which
through the research, compiling files, presenting documents and lit-
tle bits of history, a new movement can be composed.
Accordingly, what the feminist work of the 70s and the 80s fore-
warned us of and just as Hanna Arendt would say about the loss of

tradition, «there were no memories to inherit or question, to think
about and remember»1. So, this memory had to be created, this legacy
for the future –not only a feminine or feminist future, but a more com-
plex human future; one that is richer and globalized too. In fact this
memory is what is produced in our bodies and in the tribute paid to
female artists. A tribute that is established as being a tradition that
existed right up until this hidden moment. It is a celebration for dif-
ference and it is also a construct for a future mixed-race.
a artistas mujeres (Nan Goldin, Frida Kahlo, Hannah Höch, Carmen
Calvo, Alöise Corbaz, Laurie Anderson, Mona Hatoum, Shirin Nes-
1996, p.12.
Therefore the choreography of Crécent’s dancing figures is based on
feminist tradition and the identitarian questioning where the Corps
Multiples convey a mythological imagery of bodies made-of-pieces,
the Corps Glorieux (Glorious Bodies) is a collection created in honour
of female artists (Nan Goldin, Frida Kahlo, Hannah Höch, Carmen
Calvo, Alöise Corbaz, Laurie Anderson, Mona Hatoum, Shirin Neshat,…
-just to mention a few of the sculptures that pay tribute to these
artists), the Corps Hybrides (Hybrid Bodies) that are almost mechani-
cal and the Corps Vyniliques (Vinyl Bodies) that are exhibited to tear
through the stage curtain, to fly towards freedom.

The spe-
aker, Carmen Muriana introduced the theoretical and practical discussion

the artist highlighted many of the key points of this exhibition, such as the
feminist art movement and the tribute paid to female, whose art work has
been overshadowed throughout history.

«The complexity of the edges»by Álvaro de los Ángeles.
The image is a result of a structure of space-time. Space is usually de-
fined by the format: the rectangle, the square, the colour scheme and
on other occasions, this subjects the representation to the mimesis
in walls or domes, where the world appears and architecture fades
away. Time stands still, perhaps imprisoned in the limitations of spa-
ce, and also in the chronology of its era. The visual culture, art in is
diverse linguistic variants, confirms the particular transformation
of these image registrations, which act as markers on the wall of
history. The picture is created by taking on the whole weight of the
representation. This image that originates from space is the focus
point of the observer’s gaze transformed into an event: it is presented
as a narrative of ideas and as an obvious desire that these ideas find
an audience.
The still image delimits its complexity over time –noticeable in the aging
of things and faces– in the movement of their appearances, like the
shadows in the cave. That’s why the limitations produce artists: in-
termediaries between one plane and another, oblivious to the lights
and the shadows that are cast on them and reflected, yet closely bound
to them, as they allow for suture and folds, connecting them together.
Artists need shape like a plane needs lines; economy of means and ma-
ximum functionality. The Wild Pulse project by Nelo Vinuesa (Catarroja,
Valencia, 1980) acquires complexity by including time. When it is put
like that it might seem obvious, seeing as it adds movement and this
is generated by the continuous sequence. It is an «apparent movement»
that has been taken on as a true example of reality, one that now af-
fects the technical approaches of such, only in a more sophisticated
way. However in this case, space (sculpture) and time (videos) round
off the painting, setting the pace and the speed to turn it into a three-
dimensional sculpture.
The artist’s equipment evolves and mutates the flat surface into mo-
vement produced by animation and the space needed for sculpture,
although everything is used for the same purpose. The pieces that make
up Wild Pulse form an archipelago of elements that alone preserve their
individuality, but as they are close to each other, they produce a more
complex, richer version of their own isolated approaches, united by wha-
tever separates them.
Right from their origins, the work of art (pictorial) by Nelo Vinuesa has
naturally incorporated hybrid materials that are not related to the na-
tural state of the painting (for example plastics and vinyl), but whose
properties bind together with acrylic and with the need to convey the
picture as being the board of a game and an experiment where all the
possibilities come together in unison. Essentially, the creation of a com-

plex universe predominates; it’s where all the artist’s interests and
concerns coexist in the same area. In turn, this universe seems fami-
liar given the numerous ways it identifies itself with classical painting
and its overt enthusiasm for landscapes; with the formal synthesis of
primitive computer games and their 8-bit aesthetics; with the constant
possibility of the painting appearing before the crossroads of its own
self-importance.
The series of six videos is a polyhedric portrait of the city of London,
the great metropolis that is indifferent to many authorities, that is it-
self the creator of all those imaginable. The city is a protagonist that
plays various leading roles: the racial mix and its cosmopolitan cha-
racter (Portraits); the difficulty in keeping itself physically and men-
tally afloat in such a demanding city (Fall); the social conflicts and dis-
turbance (Isle of Haunts); the omnipresence of the landscape, the gar-
dens and woods inside the city or on the outskirts (Lotus, Winternight)
and the empty but active gaze at everything that is happening in this
splendid Panorama.
Moreover, the Treasure Island installation manages to move this uni-
verse made out of opaque and transparent layers in the videos and pain-
tings to the three-dimensional field, where a desire to play a game and
a board on which to play it predominates. To build the model of a world
is to apprehend it and confirm the complexity of its design: determi-
ne how everything around us works to turn the incommensurable into
plain and simple functionality.

Inflorescentia, Out of the Bloom, de Lliure Briz, es una meditada in-
tentamos desesperadamente buscar respuestas.
piezan a cobrar cierto sentido.
¡no! Es una vulgar margarita». Imposible discernir.
Indeed both Satellites and Inflorescentia, Out of the Bloom convey
a similar creative strategy. An almost scientific deeply-rooted strate-
gy that always uses seemingly objective elements as references
(whether they are landscapes obtained from state-of-the-art devices
or simple floral details) to then incorporate them using all kinds and
types of technology (digital painting, photography, animation or
video, to name but a few) and think up a subjective tale that is used
to explore the image contingencies of our moment in history. So just
like the artist’s studio that turned into a laboratory during the cre-
ative process, the exhibition hall, the space where we are now, has
become an area of risk, a place of questioning where the viewer is in-
vited, with their questions and queries, to test out the endless ex-
periments conducted by the creator.
Occupying an undefined landby Alberto Sánchez Balmisa.
Inflorescentia, Out of the Bloom, by Lliure Briz, is a meditated study
of the colour that unfolds material and space using an infinite
palette of creative experimental tests, plastic supports and techno-
logical media that are intended to bring viewers face to face with the
purest essence of the chromatic phenomenon.
Visitors to the exhibition come into a purely sensorial atmosphere
in which different large format murals create an absorbing cascade
of colour and a video invites them to embark upon a three-dimen-
sional journey. In the different pieces that make up the exhibition,
the colours seem to be reduced to their most inner, elementary na-
ture, displayed as mere amalgams of pigments that in their conti-
guity produce an infinity of abstractions for which we, devoid of
the usual initial reference points, try to find a stable base to explain
the representation.
The title of the exhibition resounds in our minds as soon as we step
into the room. It is our only clue, the trail that the artist has made
us follow, and now as we rush into the exhibition area, we des-
perately try to find answers. Little by little, the abstract elements
that surround us from the moment we set off form shapes that were
not visible before and begin to make sense. The flowers and their
boundless chromatism become the starting point of Lliure Briz’s pro-
posal. The boldest will venture into shapes, landscapes, tangible flo-
ral elements that are unspecifiable. «Here’s a magnolia... there’s a
daffodil… no! It’s a common daisy». Impossible to discern. Because
that’s what it is all about; occupying an undefined land, a founding
moment when the sheer essence of beauty fills the air and the
elements used to create the exhibition become a perfect excuse to
express a fascinating analysis of the conditioning possibilities of con-
temporary representation.
Just like in her previous work, the artist has used digital painting and
moving image to make up a sensorial tale that moves between the
limitations of reality and virtuality with skill, presenting the viewer
with a series of images that are displayed in different kinds of sup-
ports, layers of meaning and formats to turn the exhibition area into
a fundamental element of the discussion. The same occurred with
Satellites (2013), a previous project in which the reference of Lliure
Briz was a series of images acquired by this ingenious technology
that gravitates around our planet whilst we, oblivious to its effect,
hardly even notice. As in this current exhibition, these images were
converted into a series of abstractions that just couldn’t settle into
just one specific, set, stable representation.

El Luchador

24 MAG ANNUAL REPORT 2014
It is not the first time that Saúl Sellés transfers the tension of the sport
to contemporary art. His project El luchador (the fighter) that won him
the Puénting grant awarded by the MAG art gallery and the Faculty of
Fine Arts in Altea (Spain), takes up the study again that prompted him
to carry out a series of activities concerning the suspension training
exercises recorded on video in 2012, which were inspired by the spirit
of failure and the craving to compete. His interest in anatomy and the
physical feats are reminiscent of a young Matthew Barney, who is a
reference for him. Now he incorporates the seductive part that was
originally associated with the pole dance by making a series of move-
ments that express an extravagance of energy and sacrifice, but also
sensuality, a kind of sensuality that is usually reserved for female
body language subverting gender roles.
The artist establishes a clear parallelism between boxing and art. Five
real size punching bags made in impeccable shiny imitation leather are
solemnly displayed. Flags, images depicting crows, scorpions, dragons
and creatures that symbolize strength with exquisite aesthetics popu-
late the installation that focuses on showing the process involved in
producing the project.
He actually had to learn how to pole dance himself to make his vi-
sion materialize, which took months; he competed officially, de-
signing his own costume for such that is also on display, and he even
won third place in the National Pole Dance Style Championship, the
Spanish cup 2014.
«Slide, get hurt, fail by succeeding»by Marisol Salanova.
The beginnings of the pole dance are associated with eroticism and
the image of a night club that has just gone too far, however this
practice, which is becoming increasingly more popular, involves
movements that require a great deal of strength and skill. It is such
a significant genre that reputable acrobats, for example those of the
Cirque du Soleil, consider it to be a performing art. In this context, or
rather, at the height of its popularity, especially among women that
do it in the gyms to get their bodies toned like pop stars, Saúl Sellés
(Cocentaina, 1986) makes a subversive and bold proposal. The artist
acquires the technique and uses it as the leitmotif to convey the ef-
fort, the struggle and the constant threat of failure in contrast to what
is experienced on the road to success within the world of art, which is
often an unreachable destination.

Along the lines of a practice that has been associated with femi-
ninity and female striptease shows right from the start, contrary to
this we find the virile sport of boxing, which the artist combines
with ironic harmony in an installation that speaks of the competi-
tion, the stress and the strain produced when doing any sport, a
sporting metaphor of the artistic work. Pushing his body to the
limit Sellés plays the role of a boxer who fights to prove what he is
worth in a peculiar choreographic way. «He moves like a butterfly
but stings like a bee» as once said by one of the assistants of the
impervious Muhammad Ali, who is considered to be the best boxer
of all times. This has been repeated time and again to describe the
heavyweight champion in such a way that might also illustrate the
idea of Sellés.

A display case holds boxing medals, harnesses, costumes and photos.
Two televisions supported on two bars freeze the recording of an
opening event where the artist organises three rounds with different
types of exercises in which he portrays the figure of the loser, that of
the one who has failed in crushing defeat and that of the one that is
beaten and bruised, weak or in pain. Repetition, the impossible exer-
cise, the continual defeat; they all represent this state of never feeling
satisfied and yet win... Because trying to reach the pinnacle of success
is a victory in itself. We live in a society that gives everything to the
winner and penalizes whoever stays just outside the doors of success;
perhaps El luchador invites us to a change of paradigm.

WHO AM I? WHAT DO I LOOK LIKE? WHAT DO I SEE WHEN I LOOK INTO
THE MIRROR? HOW DO OTHERS SEE ME? WHAT TYPE OF PERSON AM I?
WHAT THINGS DO I LIKE AND WHAT DON’T I LIKE? WHAT DO I WANT?
HOW WOULD I LIKE TO BE? HOW CAN I PORTRAY MYSELF? How we draw
ourselves is another indicator of our identity. It represents the men-
tal image we have of ourselves and also our motor skills used to de-
pict ourselves. How we draw ourselves defines us and enables others
to recognise us.
¿Quién es quién? (Guess who?) is the result of a 2 year project carried
out in the Plastic Arts Studio at the Altabix-IVAS (Valencian Social Work
Institute) occupational therapy centre. 72 people have taken part in
the sessions where they try and spontaneously discover the creators
of the drawings. All the boys and girls drew a picture portraying them-
selves, and these drawings were then used as the basis to develop the
second part of the project; the sculptures that shape this exhibition,
which were made together at the centre’s plastic art studio, according
to the possibilities of each child, uniting abilities and effort, so that every-
one works as one. It’s a good example of how teamwork helps us to be-
come greater. Moreover, in order to promote participation, the exhibition
is laid out like a big board, ¿Quién es quién? invites viewers to join in
and play during their tour around the display, discovering that we are
what we see, although we can also see what we are.
Other groups visited the MAG Art Gallery while the exhibition was
on and they took part in ¿Quién es quién? drawing pictures inspired
by their image of themselves to contribute to the joint project and
make it grow.

Resulta más que curioso que esta
provincia haya alumbrado a algu-
nos de los artistas más importantes
de la fotografía contemporánea de
nuestro país, y con mayor prestigio
internacional, y que pocas veces,
o nunca, se les haya reconocido
como merecen desde su territorio
que se convierte con esta exposi-
ción en protagonista de su obra.
It is rather extraordinary that this
province has produced some of
the leading Spanish and interna-
tionally acclaimed artists in con-
temporary photography, although
very rarely, sometimes never are
they rewarded as they should be
at home and with this exhibition
she becomes the true protagonist
of her work.

Presenta los originales de la última
publicación de este autor de estilo
clásico y querencia por el grabado
del XIX y las vanguardias. Su espe-
cialidad es el libro ilustrado pero en
esta ocasión se pasa al formato co-
mic, donde se entrega sin disimulo
al homenaje de la Serie B cinema-
tográfica y a los programas televi-
sivos con historias breves de terror.
Presenting the originals of the latest
publication of this classical style
author, who has a passion for 19th
century printmaking and the avant-
garde movement. He specialises in
illustrated books, but on this occasion
he has gone for the comic format,
where he unabatedly pays tribute to
the B movies and television program-
mes with brief horror stories.

the principal activity will be a hap-

AURELIO AYELAOctubre - DiciembreOctober - December
Aurelio Ayela presenta en esta
muestra una especie de memoria
telúrica de los objetos y los ma-
teriales. Sobre todo los desecha-
bles; objetos de un solo uso cuya
digna función como contenedo-
res, se ve reducida drásticamente
en el tiempo.
In this collection Aurelio Ayela pre-
sents a kind of telluric record of
objects and materials. In parti-
cular disposable goods; objects
that are intended for one use
only, whose praiseworthy func-
tion such as containers, is decre-
asing drastically over time.
