We Are Keeping Busy at SJN!
Although May brings thoughts of summer
vaca!on, we are s!ll busy with
educa!onal ac!vi!es at SJN. Our First Communion
ac!vi!es for second graders, the trip to Camp
Seewee for sixth graders, the Young Author’s Tea for
kindergartners, the trip to Carowinds for the fourth
graders, the first grader’s presenta!on of “Alpha
Bop,” the fi-h grade field study and overnight at the
zoo, Field Day, and the Fes!val of Giving have all
been highly successful. Phew! We do keep busy!
The sixth graders are also keeping quite busy as their
!me at SJN draws to a successful conclusion. On
Thursday, May 24th
, the students will par!cipate in a
“Lock-In” in the SJN gym. This is a religious retreat
where the focus is on how to deal with peer
pressure as they move into the middle school se<ng
and how to con!nue to “Experience Success.” By
now, these young people are looking forward to the
next phase of their lives, confident that the
founda!ons of faith and academics that they have
learned with us will keep them steady as they
leave. Tuesday, May 29th
will find them having a
special breakfast and preparing to graduate that
night. Please come and help these young people
celebrate their successes at St. John Neumann
Catholic School.
Our students have been involved in providing food
to local children who have inadequate nourishment
in their homes. Joining with Harvest Hope, we are
collec!ng food to fill backpacks with much needed
provisions and taking them to Polo Road Elementary
School. We are collec!ng food that will be
distributed to these needy children while we are
celebra!ng another successful year at SJN. We are
proud of our students for giving from their hearts to
help those in need.
The teachers are also being treated this month in a
special way. The PSA recognizes teachers with a
special treat each month, but this month is Very
Special as each teacher takes home a meal provided
by parents who volunteered to cook for them. What
a treat for busy teachers to have a home cooked
meal without all of the prep !me required. Thanks
so much, PSA!
Congratula!ons to the Class of 2018!

From the Organ Bench
From the Organ Bench: History of Catholic Hymn
Singing in a Nutshell, 3 of 4 ar#cles
Assembly singing faded away 5th
- 10th
centuries. Chant
became the staple of Roman Church music. Coinciding
with Western European secular music development,
prac!ce of polyphony (combining several voice parts
on top of and surrounding a melody) began appearing
in Holy Mass during the 12th
century. Apparently,
things were ge<ng out of hand by the 1300s when we
read from Jacob of Liege:
There are some who although they contrive to sing a
li&le in the modern manner, nevertheless, they have
no regard for quality; they sing too lasciviously, they
mul!ply voices superfluously some of them employ the
hocquetus too much, breaking, cu<ng and dividing
their voices into too many consonants; in
the most inopportune places they dance, whirl and
jump about on notes, howling like dogs.
This type of part-singing was eventually banned by
Rome. Some styles of music simply do not fit the spirit
of Holy Mass. However, more moderate musicians
advanced the art of part-singing in Mass se<ngs,
le<ng go of the specific hocket technique against
which the Church ranted. By the 1500s great Masters
e.g. Palestrina, Byrd, Josquin des Prez, and more, were
crea!ng beau!ful music works with mul!ple
harmonies for Holy Mass, Masters which even today
the Va!can encourages us to use. These type works are
o-en sung by our choir at St. John Neumann. However,
the harmonies and rhythms are too complicated to
sing without rehearsal, thus these type songs are
reserved for clerics and rehearsed choirs only.
