MASTEROFPUBLICADMINISTRATIONMission:TheMasterofPublicAdministration(MPA)degreeatKansasStateUniversitypreparesbothinandpre-servicestudentstoservethepublicinterestandestablishthemselvesascivicleaders.Theprogramemphasizesatheoreticallyinformedandresearchdrivenskillsbasedapproachtolearningdesignedtoensurethatourstudentsdevelopspecificcompetencies,whichpreparethemforthechallengesofworkinthepublicandnon-profitsectorsimmediatelyupongraduation.Ourfaculty’sapproachtoeducationbeginswithabroadexposuretopolicysystems,politicalenvironments,administrativeprincipalsandresearchmethods.Additionally,ourstudentsarerequiredtothinkcritically,applyknowledgeandseekpracticalsolutionstorealworldproblems.Ourlowfacultytostudentratiocontributestoastudent-centeredlearningenvironmentinwhichweareabletoinstillinourstudentstheethicsofpublicserviceandprofessionalmanagementthatarecriticaltothediverseandchangingmodernworkplace.TheK-StateMPAdegreeprogramisaflexibleprofessionaldegreedesignedforthosewhowishtoholdadministrativepositionsinawiderangeofadministrativeenvironmentsinthepublicsector.Graduatesaretrainedforemploymentwithgovernmentagenciesatthefederal,state,orlocallevel,andwithregionalorsub-stateorganizations.Opportunitiesarealsoavailableforgraduatesoftheprogramwithnonprofitorganizations,publicinterestgroupsorcommissions,privatecorporationsthatworkwithgovernmentagencies,andinternationalorganizations.TheK-StateMPAprogramservesbothpreandin-servicestudents.Pre-servicestudentswithoutprioradministrativeexperiencehaveenjoyedgreatsuccessinobtainingbothvaluableinternshipswhilepursuingtheirdegree,andchallengingemploymentupongraduation.Forin-servicestudentstheprogramhasbeenvaluableintheirpresentadministrativepositionsaswellasincareeradvancement.TheK-StateMPAdegreeisespeciallyattractivetoin-servicestudentsbyvirtueofouronlineandeveningofferings.Throughcarefulscheduling,allofourcorecoursesandmanyofourelectivecoursesmaybecompletedintheeveningoronline.TheK-StateMPAprogramisaccreditedbytheNetworkofSchoolsofPublicPolicy,AffairsandAdministration(NASPAA).

ADMISSIONREQUIREMENTSTobeeligible foradmission,astudentmusthaveaBachelor'sdegreewithaminimumof3.0GPA(onafourpointscale).Otherswithatleasta2.8GPAmaybeadmittedonprobation.AdditionalRequirementsforInternationalStudents

• EnglishLanguageProficiency:TheGraduateSchoolrequireseachinternationalapplicantwhosenativelanguageisnotEnglishtodemonstratecompetenceintheEnglishlanguagebymakingasatisfactoryscoreontheTestofEnglishasaForeignLanguage(TOEFL),theInternationalEnglishLanguageTestingSystem(IELTS)andPearsonTestofEnglish(PTE).TheTOEFL,IELTSorPTEisrequiredtoensurethatlanguagebarriersdonotjeopardizethestudent’sprogresstowardadegree.AnapplicantwhohasreceivedadegreeinthelasttwoyearsfromaUnitedStatescollegeoruniversityisexemptfromthisrequirement.However,individualprogramsmayrequiredemonstrationofEnglishlanguageproficiency.

STUDENTRESPONSIBILITYAccordingtotheKansasStateUniversityGraduateSchool,graduatestudentsareheldresponsibleforknowingtheacademicpoliciesanddegreerequirementssetforthintheBulletin(GeneralCatalog).Theyarelikewiseheldresponsibleforknowingtheregulationsconcerningthedegreetheyplantotakeandanyspecialrequirementswithinthedepartmentoracademicunit.Inaddition,itisthestudent'sresponsibilitytobeinformedregardingtheUniversity'spoliciesastothestandardofworkrequiredforcontinuedenrollmentintheGraduateSchool.TheGraduateSchoolshouldbeconsultedifadditionalinformationisneeded.Graduatestudents,uponregistration,acknowledgethejurisdictionoftheK-StateHonorandIntegritySystem.ThepoliciesandproceduresoftheHonorandIntegritySystemapplytoallgraduatecourseson-campus,aswellasonline.

GraduateAssistantships

TheDepartmentofPoliticalScienceprovidesfinancialaidtostudentsintheformofagraduateassistantshiponacompetitivebasisinexchangeforassistancetofacultywiththeirteaching,orresearch,orboth.SelectionCriteria:Awardsreflectthefollowingcriteria:

• Academicperformance,promise,andintellectualability.• Pastperformanceasadepartmentalassistant,ifapplicable.• Teachingandresearchneedsofthedepartmentfaculty.• Financialneed.

ConditionsofAssistantship:Graduateassistantsmustenrollinaminimumofsixcredithourspersemesterandmakereasonabledegreeprogressasreflectedbyatleasta3.5GPA.Duringtheperiodofappointmentassistantsmaynotholdanotherpaidfulltimepositionofanykind.Thedepartmentreservestherighttowithdrawsupportatanytimeifacademicperformancefallsbelowthe3.5GPAorifjobperformanceisnotsatisfactory.
