He Who Is Mighty
Elliot and DeGraide
Oh, the mercy our God has shown
To those who sit in death’s shadow.
The sun on high pierced the night;
Born was the Cornerstone.
Unto us a Son is given, unto us a Child is born.
He Who is mighty has done a great thing;
Taken on flesh, conquered death’s sting,
Shattered the darkness and lifted our shame.
Holy is His name.
Oh, the freedom our Savior won;
The yoke of sin has been broken.
Once a slave, now by grace
No more condemnation.
Unto us a Son is given, unto us a Child is born.
He Who is mighty has done a great thing;
Taken on flesh, conquered death’s sting,
Shattered the darkness and lifted our shame.
Holy is His name.
Now my soul magnifies the Lord;
I rejoice in the God Who saves.
I will trust His unfailing love;
I will sing His praises all my days.

Hark! The Herald Angels Sing
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,
God and sinner reconciled!”
Joyful, all ye nations, rise,
Join the triumph of the skies;
With th’ angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”
Refrain
Hark! The herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King.”
Christ, by highest heav’n adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord!
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of the Virgin’s womb.
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;
Hail th’ incarnate Deity,
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel. (Refrain)
Hail the heav’n born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Ris’n with healing in his wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth. (Refrain)

Angels From the Realms of Glory
Dan Forrest
Angels from the realms of glory, wing your flight o’er all the earth;
Ye who sang creation’s story now proclaim Messiah’s birth.
Refrain: Come and worship, come and worship,
Worship Christ, the newborn King.
Shepherds, in the field abiding, watching o’er your flocks by night,
God with us is now residing; yonder shines the infant light:
Refrain
Sages, leave your contemplations, brighter visions beam afar;
Seek the great Desire of nations; ye have seen His natal star.
Refrain
All creation, join in praising God, the Father, Spirit, Son,
Evermore your voices raising to th’ eternal Three in One.
But when the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son, born of woman, born under the law, to redeem those who
were under the law, so that we might receive adoption as sons.
- Galatians 4:4-5
Angels We Have Heard on High
(All)
Angels we have heard on high,
Sweetly singing o’er the plains,
And the mountains in reply
Echoing their joyous strains.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
(All Men)
Shepherds, why this jubilee?
Why your joyous strains prolong?
What the gladsome tidings be
Which inspire your heavenly song?
(All)
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
(All Women)
Come to Bethlehem and see
Him whose birth the angels sing;
Come, adore on bended knee,
Christ the Lord, the newborn King.
(All)
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
(All)
Hymns of praise then let us sing
Unto Christ our heav’nly King,
Who endured the cross and grave,
Sinners to redeem and save.
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Gloria, in excelsis Deo!
Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God, the
firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were
created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible,
whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities
- all things were created through him and for him.
And he is before all things, and in him all things hold
together. And he is the head of the body, the church.
He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that
in everything he might be preeminent. For in him all
the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and
through him to reconcile to himself all things,
whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the
blood of his cross.
- Colossians 1:15-20
*** Seating Interlude***
From Messiah (No. 14-17)
G. F. Handel
There were shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over
their flocks by night. And lo, the angel of the Lord came upon
them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them, and
they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them: “Fear
not, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which
shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city
of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.” And suddenly
there was with the angel, a multitude of the heavenly host,
praising God, and saying: “Glory to God in the highest, and
peace on earth, good will towards men.”
Luke 2:8-14
When the angels went away from them into heaven,
the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to
Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened,
which the Lord has made known to us.” And they
went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the
baby lying in a manger. And when they saw it, they
made known the saying that had been told them
concerning this child. And all who heard it wondered
at what the shepherds told them. But Mary
treasured up all these things, pondering them in her
heart. And the shepherds returned, glorifying and
praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it
had been told them.
- Luke 2:15-20
The First Noel
(All)
The First Noel, the Angels did say
Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;
In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,
On a cold winter’s night that was so deep.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
(All Women)
They looked up and saw a star
Shining in the East beyond them far;
(All Men)
And to the earth it gave great light,
And so it continued both day and night.
(Choir Alone)
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
(All)
Then let us all with one accord
Sing praises to our heavenly Lord;
That hath made Heaven and earth of nought,
And with his blood mankind has bought.
Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel
Born is the King of Israel!
A Cradle Carol
Dan Forrest
Lord Jesus, Savior, infant weak,
Why come to earth as one so meek?
A new-born babe, helpless
And small; and yet Creator of us all.
Thou has no beauty form nor grace;
No fortune, rank, no fame, no place,
That men should see thee and adore
A babe so humble and so poor.
But to the soul whose eyes are healed,
To whom the Truth has been revealed,
Thy glory challenges the sun;
Thou art a thousand joys in One.
Though strangers see a babe in straw,
Thy children see the Lord of all
Who laid aside His rightful reign
To take away our sin and shame.
This sacrifice of love divine,
This condescension to mankind
With beauty robes thy lowly frame,
And sanctifies Thy simple name.
O aid my worship, Mighty King,
That I might with the angels sing,
“Glory to God on high!”
O help me see Thee and adore
This little child, my God and Lord.
The Hands That First Held Mary’s Child
Dan Forrest
The hands that first held Mary’s child
Were hard from working wood,
From boards they sawed and planed and filed
And splinters they withstood.
This day they gripped no tool of steel,
They drove no iron nail,
But cradled from the head to heel
Our Lord, newborn and frail.
When Joseph marveled at the size
Of that small breathing frame,
And gazed upon those bright new eyes
And spoke the infant’s name,
The angel’s words he once had dreamed
Poured down from heaven’s height,
And like the host of stars that beamed
Blessed earth with welcome light.
“This child shall be Emmanuel,
Not God upon the throne,
But God with us, Emmanuel,
As close as blood and bone.”
The tiny form in Joseph’s palm
Confirmed what he had heard,
And from his heart rose hymns and psalms
For heaven’s human word.
The tools that Joseph laid aside
A mob would later lift
And use with anger, fear, and pride
To crucify God’s gift.
Let us, O Lord, not only hold
The child who’s born today,
But charged with faith may we be bold
To follow in his way.
(We encourage any children second grade and above to
continue in corporate worship if the parent wishes. All others
will leave through the left side for Bible Story in Cornerstone.)
