GRAMMAR, SPELLING, and PUNCTUATION

Improving your control over English grammar, spelling and

punctuation is one of the best ways to improve your ability to read and

write. Here are some things you can do to work on your English Language

skills.

1. Go to this website to find online activities:

https://www.k12reader.com/subject/grammar/

2. Read, Read, Read! Find something you enjoy reading and read for 10 minutes to

half an hour a day.

3. Complete the following activities (All of these work sheets are from the website

above and the answers can be found there).

Figurative Language is also an important part of reading and

writing. Figurative language is when you use a word or phrase

that does not have its normal everyday, literal meaning. Metaphors

and Similes are two common examples of Figurative Language.

In Year 8 English next term, students will

be learning the cognitive skill of ANALYSING

through the study of Indigenous Perspectives in

texts.

Here are some things you can do to get ahead:

1. Teach yourself more about the Cognitive Verb – Analysis

2. Familiarise yourself with some of the texts that may be studied:

Rabbit Proof Fence – 2002 film

The Rabbits – picture book by John Marsden

Hate, He Said – Poem by Steven Oliver

Dust Echoes – Indigenous Website https://education.abc.net.au/home#!/digibook/2570774/dust-echoes

3. Complete some of the activities that can be found on the Learning Place:

https://students.learningplace.eq.edu.au/lp/Pages/Default.aspx?cid=239945
