Living with AD/HD: Lessons from Norma-Some learned/some still needed

Reconciling the Mask of Competence with the Struggles Underneath

My thoughts, my experiencesMatt Cohen

March 1, 2011

Like Many People with AD/HD, I often feel….

• Inadequate• Self-doubting• Unloved or unlovable• Self-blaming• Phony• Defensive• Highly demanding of

myself, but very self-critical

• Prone to take risks

• Sensitive to criticism• Have difficulty

acknowledging problems or confronting difficult situations with others

• Difficulty saying no • Overwhelmed,

emotionally and with daily tasks

• Easily distractible and sometimes unaware of the consequences of the situation.

Outward bravado, hyper- control or activity mask internal distress

• Pain• Loneliness• Embarrassment• Isolation• Anxiety• Guilt • Lack of control • Fear of the world collapsing• Difficulty doing what we know is needed…• Trouble being open and direct with ourselves and others

Lack of self-confidence, self-trust and self-discipline leads to

avoiding problems, self-deception and rationalization

and difficulty being truthful with self

and others

Dealing with it….

• Awareness • Acceptance • Taking charge of yourself• Being open with your self and the people

around you • Seeking help and support from others• Never give up and never forget that these

issues have to be managed, but don’t go away.

I can’t find peace from and with others unless I can find peace with myself!

Norma- You are an amazing teacher, guide, partner and support. I will keep learning and growing.. I love you and I thank you, .Matt
