You don’t need a passport to experience incredible off-shore recreation

It’s easy to fall into the habit of thinking you have totravel to foreign lands to experience dramaticviews, rocky island cliffs, incredible diving, open-

water fishing and other typically tropical activities thatwe Coloradans enjoy.

But it’s simply not true. Just an inexpensive flight toLos Angeles and a boat ride willhave you sunning, casting, pad-dling and hiking — as well as eat-ing and drinking — on one of themost beautiful and relaxingislands off North Americanshores: Santa Catalina Island. Inview of the California shoreline,it’s a place that most have heardof but one that even many Ange-

lenos have never been to. And here you can not onlyescape the hustle and bustle of everyday life, but youcan get your Colorado-style kicks with a variety ofeco- and adventure-based activities.

When planning your trip, there are three ways toapproach your stay on Catalina. If you want to goquiet-rustic, head to the northern settlement of TwoHarbors. Here you will find a solitary bed and break-fast with 12 rooms, one restaurant, a dive shop, nomore than 200 permanent residents, a handful ofcamps and private yacht clubs, tent camping, sealions, birds, bison, fish, beauty and peace and quiet. It’s wonderful.

The southern colony of Avalon is equally as beauti-ful but quite different from Two Harbors. Maintainingthe same beach-town vibe, with a distinctive South-ern European look, Avalon sometimes has upwards of3,800 residents and offers dozens of restaurants, manyhotels, golf, sightseeing tours, numerous water-basedactivities, camping, trails and scenery.

The third option, of course, is to see both. Duringsummer months and certain weekends into the fall, the island tends to fill up, so consider planning yourtrip during one of the shoulder/off seasons. The tem-perature of the high-visibility azure waters — ideal forscuba, snorkeling, sea kayaking and spear fishing —remain cold even when air temperatures reach typicalSouthern California highs, so come prepared withyour wetsuit. And campsites do require reservations, with a roughing-it scale ranging from primitive toplatform pup tent and gear haul.

For the paddling enthusiast, a circumnavigation ofthe island while camping several nights is the ultimatethrill. Sea lions, flying fish, whales and dozens of otherspecies await your arrival. Read up on conditions andnavigation before departing. For the serious bipeds, look into the Trans-Catalina Trail and multiday back-packing options.

You can bring anything you want over on the ferry(www.CatalinaExpress.com), from coolers and golfclubs to dogs and mountain bikes, so decide whileplanning your trip if you are looking for hardcorerecreation, lightweight backpacking or luxury.
