The Land Trust of Virginia, a non-profit organization that provides land trust to protect openspace and natural and historic resources in Virginia, honored three landowners withconservation awards at the annual “Garden Party to Save Virginia’s Countryside” on June 18.

Landowner of the Year

Dr. George and Nichola Bazaco who own the Windham property near Hillsboro were namedLTV’s Landowner of the Year. In March 2010, the Bazacos placed their 496 acre property underconservation easement. The Windham property is also the home of Doukenie Winery and is visible from Mountain Road outside of Hillsboro. The Bazacos were named Landowners of the Year by LTV due to their dedication and commitment in preserving one of Loudoun County’smost spectacular properties.

Steward of the Year

Ginny Friend who owns Talbot Farm outside of Waterford was named LTV’s Steward of the Year. Friend was one of the first landowners in Virginia to put her property in a conservationeasement. First in 2000, placing 25 acres in easement and then in 2003 by placing an additional240 acres. The Steward of the Year award is awarded to a Virginia landowner who on theirproperty employs best management practices, cares for their land, complies with the terms andconditions of the easement and exudes what it is to be an ideal steward of the land.

Conservationist of the Year

Magalen “Maggie” O. Bryant of Fauquier County was named Conservationist of the Year for being an advocate for wildlife protection and conservation measures around the world. She isthe past two-term chairperson of the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, a board member of the National Wildlife Foundation and the WILD Foundation, a supporter of Peace ParksFoundation and a member of the American Bird Conservacy’s Advisory Council. Bryant was oneof the first citizens in Fauquier to place more than 1,000 acres of her property underconservation easement. Bryant has consistently helped to preserve the landscapes of western
