Thecoursewillprovideablendoftheoreticallaboreconomicsandappliedresearch.Wewillcoverfivebroadthemes:I.RaceandGenderInequality,DiscriminationII.IntergenerationalMobilityIII.WageandEmploymentDynamicsIV.TheSupplySideoftheLaborMarket 1)TheQuantityofLaborSupplied 2)TheQualityofLaborSupplied:HumanCapitalandtheEconomicsofEducationProfessorAntonovicswillteachtopicsI-IIIduringweeks1-5(April6toMay4(firsthalfofclass)).ProfessorBettswillteachTopicIVduringweeks5-9(May5(secondhalfofclass)toJune1).Duringthelastweekofclass(June8),youwillpresentyourresearchpapers.RequirementsfortheCourse/ScheduleTodowellinthiscourseyoushouldhavecompletedthemicroeconomicsandeconometrics(A-C)courses.ItwouldbehelpfulifyouhavealreadytakenLaborEconomics250A/B,becausetherewecoveredmanyoftheempiricalmethodsthatwewilluseinthiscourse.Ofthese250Aisthemostimportant.Ifyouareunsure,pleaseconsultoneofthepast250Acoursesyllabi,anddiscusswitheitherofusifthereareholesinyourknowledgeoftherelevantempiricalmethods. Youarerequiredto:writeyourownoriginaltermpaper,onasubjectinlaboreconomicsofyourchoosing;andcompleteonefinal.Inaddition,wewillaskyoutopresentandcritiquetworecentpapersinaninformalsetting;youarealsoexpectedtoattendandparticipateactivelyinallclasses. Hereissomeadviceonfindingatopicforyourtermpaper.PerusingrecentissuesoftheJournalofLaborEconomics,theJournalofHumanResources,orgeneralinterestjournalssuchastheAER,JPE,Econometrica,R.E.Statetc.maygiveyousomeideasontopics.NBERworkingpapersprovideanothersource.Thereadinglistforthiscoursemightalsohelpyou.Second,ifyoualreadyhaveageneralareainmind(immigration,laborsupply,economicsofeducationetc.)butnotaspecifictopic,thenoneofthemoredifficultchallengesistowhittleyourinterestdowntosomethingmorespecific.TheHandbookofLaborEconomicsprovidesliteraturereviewsthatmayhelpyouseewhichareasareoverlywell-troddenandwhicharerelativelysparselyresearched.AthirdapproachistoflipthroughtheStatisticalAbstractoftheUnitedStatesorrelatedgovernmentpublicationssuchastheDigestofEducationStatistics–sometimesseeingwhatsortsofdatathegovernmentcollectsandpatternsindatacangetyourcreativejuicesflowing.Fourth,talktobothofusaboutyourideas.Thisiswhywearehere!

1)Comeupwithaproposalforanoriginalempiricalpaper.Inweek2pleasesubmittousoneortwoideasfororiginalpapers.Wewillworkwithyoutodecidewhichtopursue.Thefinalpapershouldbeaproposalforanoriginalempiricalpaper,whichstateshowthispaperwouldcontributetotheliterature,devisesanempiricalstrategythatis(ideally)basedintheory,anddiscussesdatasourcesthatyoucoulduse.Ideally,yourproposalwouldbeofsufficientqualitythatyoucouldsubmititasagrantproposaltoanoutsideorganization.(Wedonotrequiresubmittingagrantapplication,butencourageyoutothinkalongtheselines.Wewillworkwithyouifyoudecidetofollowthisroute.)2)Alternativelyyoucouldinitiateorcontinueanapplied(oratheoretical)project.Someofyoumayhaveinitiatedmoreempirically(ortheoretically)orientedprojectsin250A,250B,220F,orothergraduatecourses.Youarewelcometocontinuethatworkinthiscourse,butyoumustclearthiswithusandprovideuswiththefinalversionyoupreparedforthoseclasses,alongwithaclearstatementofhowyouwillextendthatanalysis.Notethatiftheempiricalprojectislimitedinscopeitmaybeconceivableforyoutostartfromscratch,developaplan,acquireandcleandata,andperformtheempiricalanalysis.(Thisgoesbeyondoption1above.)Wecertainlywouldwelcomethisbutdotalktousfirstsothatwecanhelpjudgewhetherthissoundsfeasibleoverthe10weeksofquarter.3)Alternativelywritea10-15pageliteraturereviewofatopicinlaboreconomics.ThisliteraturereviewMUSTalsoincludethoughtfulsuggestionsforfutureresearch.Thislatterstatementisparticularlytrueifyouwouldliketoextendalitreviewfromanearliercourse.Youwouldwanttocomeupwithamoredetailedandfocusedlitreviewthatbuildsupontheoriginalpaperandwhichdiscussesnewpaperideasindetail.
