Ordering system-chemical stock

Chemical stock

• = all products that need to be stored in the chemical stockroom or in other cupboards/freezers in the TARGID lab

• these products will receive a TARGID ID based on their chemical properties and safety

TARGID ID-VGM

• Recommendations VGM

– Liquids must be separated from solids

– Organic must be separated from inorganic

– Toxic products must be in a cupboard with suction

– Inflammable products must be in a safety cabinet

TARGID ID

• 1-999: Solid, Inorganic (f.e. Sodium Chloride)• 1000-3999: Solid, Organic (f.e. Amino Acids)• 4000-4499: Solid, Toxic (f.e. Sodium Nitrite)• 6000-6499: Solid, Inflammable (f.e. SDS)

• 5800-5999: Liquids, Inorganic (f.e. HCl 0.1 M)• 5500-5799: Liquids, Organic (f.e. Glycerol)• 5000-5499: Liquids, Toxic Inorganic (f.e. Ammonia)• 4500-4999: Liquid, Toxic Organic (f.e. Formaldehyde)• 6500-6999: Liquid, Inflammable (f.e. Ether)

– You DO have to inform Ans, Hanne or Els, when you replace a product to another room!

– You MUST put empty bottles/vials in the blue box in the product room

CAS number

What is a CAS number

• Is a unique international number for chemical products (NO mixtures)

• It’s the easiest way to find a correct product– f.e. MgCl => CAS: 7786-30-3 MgCl.6H2O => CAS: 7791-18-6

• Format: 99999-99-9– f.e. Sodium Propionate: 137-40-6– f.e.: HEPES: 7365-45-9

• Find a CAS number by searching in google on name+CAS or on the bottle

Classification

Classification of hazardous compounds

dangerous(severe effect)

E3(f.e. HCl)

Moderately Dangerous

E2(f.e. butanol)

Slightly dangerous

E1(f.e. citric acid)

Very dangerous(acute or very severe effect)

E4

Not dangerous(no hazard statement)

E0(f.e. glucose)

Hazardous compounds

Risks (hazard statements)

E4 (f.e. formaldehyde)

E4 (RA to VGM) (f.e. diethyl ether)

SAP numbers

What is an SAP number?

• = a number which is assigned by the KULeuven to order hazardous compounds (E1 – E4)

• An SAP number is characterized by compound, quality and amount – acetonitrile, 99.8 %, 2.5 L ordered by VWR or Fisher Scientific:

SAP number = 15560– guanidine thiocyanate, 97%, 250 g, sigma G6639: SAP number

= 43538– guanidine thiocyanate, 97%, 500 g, sigma G6639: SAP number

= not known (requested)

When should you use an SAP number?

• All products with at least 1 Hazard statement (former risk (R) sentence) belong to classification E1 to E4

• For all these products, an SAP number MUST be used

How can you find the SAP number?

• In the TARGID ordering system

How can you find the SAP number?

• In the database of the KULeuven: KULoket\General\My shopping List\start besteltoepassing\

How can you request an SAP number?

• When the SAP number isn’t available in the TARGID ordering system

AND • the SAP number isn’t available in the KULeuven

database

the SAP number must be requested by e-mail (Sapnummers@aankoop.kuleuven.be)

How can you request an SAP number?

• Data: Product name, quality, CAS number, amount, company, catalog number, website link to product

Targid webstore: all orders via the new system

• Remember orders are not placed automatically !!!• Don’t forget to place your orders at the latest on Friday

New organization of the stockroom

all the things of the pharmacy (syringes, needles, NaCl,…) are now in the corridor. They have to stay there and will not be ordered by the stockroomladies. (do it yourself –Targid webstore)

the goal is to have one brand of most of the things: Some things will chance from brand when they are empty. (for example: 6 well of IWAKI will become 6 well of TPP, …)

in the future there will be only one brand of 15ml and 50ml tubes (Sarstedt tubes). Notice the difference between sterile and non-sterile tubes.

New organization of the stockroom

Put empty boxes with a number/barcode on the shelf. The responsible of the month will scan them out.

We don’t need:- “single boxes of gloves, facial tissue,…

(= boxes without number/barcode)

- Boxes that don’t belong to the stockroom (for example: syringes pharmacy)

We only order things of the stockroom. If you have “personal things” that have a place in the stockroom: order yourself !

If there is a problem: please contact the responsible of the month (schedule -> door of the stockroom)

General problems

Micro balance:

• Can only be used for weighing μg (peptides, pharmacological agents…)

• Contaminated with trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid unacceptable• Don’t use big spoons but a special spatula!

Train new master students, Phd students etc.

General problems

Washing-up room:

• Remove writing from the glassware with ethanol before putting it into the dishwasher

• Rinse glassware before putting it in the washing-up room• Don’t put glassware contaminated with SybrSafe in the washing-up

room. This glassware has to stay in the PCR room (agarose gels). o When you worked with SybrSafe or touched anything in the contaminated

zone, remove your gloves when leaving this area!o Do not touch door handles with gloves, and specially when working with

hazardous materials as Sybr Safe• Don’t forget to send a mail on Monday to the people that are on duty for

the washing-up after you

o Train new master students, Phd students etc.

General problems

Biological waste:• Don’t forget to put a sticker on the yellow bins in the stockroom.

Put number “256” on the label.• Small containers that contain sharps need to be put in a yellow

container or a cordi Box• Cordi box:

o Don’t forget to put number 256 on the boxo Close the box properly

Train new master students, Phd students etc.

General problemsThe bag inside the box needs to be closed with a plastic strips (yellow) before closing the box. This strip can be found on top of the cordi box.

General problems

This is unacceptable !

Christmas party

Don’t forget to register for the Christmas party Faculty Club, Wednesday December 21st at 7 pm

Don’t forget to fill in the Targid questionnaire sent by the Party Committee
