As landowners along the Kankakee River near Wilmington, we have personally seen theimpacts of erosion on the river. Only in recent years have we noticed sand that has beencarried from points upstream being deposited on our section of riverbank. That is why wefeel the formation of the Kankakee Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area is a necessarymove to preserve and restore natural areas in the Kankakee River basin.

We believe that the map provided on the USF&WS website appears to delineate many ofimportant natural areas with the potential for expanding on them to minimizefragmentation and to establish corridors for wildlife. Protecting the oak savannacommunities within the planning area is another important component of the overall planin that it will maintain the complex ecosystem that supports endemic plants and animals.
