Dear Jeanne Holler, Dear U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Thank you for the opportunity tocomment on the Conservation Opportunities Map for the Kankakee National WildlifeRefuge and Conservation Area. I support the establishment and expansion of theKankakee National Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area through the purchase of landfrom willing sellers because publicly-owned natural areas allow all people to enjoy natureand engage in outdoor recreation. I agree with the Conservation Map's emphasis onconserving wetlands and forested bottomlands. Wetlands provide vital services to ourplanet by filtering water and reducing flooding. If the Service can convert marginalfarmland into a rich wetland through buying land from willing sellers, I believe that is agood use of tax dollars. The map's emphasis on connecting existing conservation landswith the Refuge is logical. Connecting these conservation areas will provide more habitatfor migratory birds and other animals. I support conserving rare black oak savannas andother habitats on the map that support threatened and endangered species. We mustpreserve these habitats and species for future generations. While private owners cancertainly preserve habitat and steward land, I value publicly-owned land that is accessibleto all. I encourage the Service to highlight on the map that land will only be bought fromwilling sellers, and that the public will have access to Refuge land. Also, as funds allow, Ifeel the Service should build and staff a Kankakee National Wildlife Refuge andConservation Area Welcome Center so visitors can access restrooms and water. Iencourage the Service to continue meeting with the local community that will be impactedby the Refuge. I believe that the Service and local communities can work togethertowards the goal of protecting both the environment and the community's interests. Iencourage the Service to work with the community so that any eco-tourists are aware oflocally-owned businesses that would welcome more customers. Thank you for thisopportunity to provide input as the USFWS develops its Land Protection Plan for theKankakee Refuge. Sincerely, Janice Ehrenhaft 17525 N Breckenridge Ln Mount Vernon,IL 62864 [email protected] 1111111111

Subject: Comments on Draft Plan for the Kankakee National Wildlife Refuge
As landowners along the Kankakee River near Wilmington, we have personally seen theimpacts of erosion on the river. Only in recent years have we noticed sand that has beencarried from points upstream being deposited on our section of riverbank. That is why wefeel the formation of the Kankakee Wildlife Refuge and Conservation Area is a necessarymove to preserve and restore natural areas in the Kankakee River basin.
We believe that the map provided on the USF&WS website appears to delineate many ofimportant natural areas with the potential for expanding on them to minimizefragmentation and to establish corridors for wildlife. Protecting the oak savannacommunities within the planning area is another important component of the overall planin that it will maintain the complex ecosystem that supports endemic plants and animals.
Thank you for the opportunity to comment.
