Starter:

• IntroducetheconceptofaworldmapeitherthroughlocatingtheUKonGoogleEarthbyzoominginfromaworldviewtotheshapeoftheUK,orbyshowingaworldmapposterandfindingtheUK.

• Showhotandcoldphotocardsanddiscusseachinturn.Sortthepicturesintohotandcoldplacesbyencouragingthechildrentolookcarefullyatthepicturestoseewhatpeoplearewearing,whattheweatherlookslike,whatsortofplantsaregrowingetc.

• Usingyourworldmap,showthechildrenwhereintheworldthesepicturesweretaken.Explainthatthesephotographsrepresentwhatthatplaceislikesomeofthetimeandisapictureofjustoneplacethereinordernottoreinforcestereotypes,whilstalsoprovidinganimagetoholdonto.

• Showruralandurbanphotocardsanddiscusseachasbefore.Thistimeintroducetheterms‘urban’and‘rural’andsortthepicturesaccordingtothesecategories.Encouragethechildrentorecognisedifferencesbetweenruralandurbansettingssuchasthenumberofpeople,thetraffic,thebuildings(sizeandmaterials)etc.
