Blood-brain barrier (BBB) integrity.
Nanoparticles for drug delivery to the brain through the BBB.
Pericyte – Endothelium interrelations.
Astroglia – Endothelium interrelations.
Epilepsy – BBB interrelations.
Hypertension – BBB interrelations.
Cortical dysplasia – Epileptogenesis – BBB interrelations.
Sepsis – BBB interrelations.
Hyperbaric oxygen – BBB interrelations.
I have been working on the morphology, physiology and pathology of the rat brain microvessels in
experimental animal models since 1984. Starting from the beginning of the 1990’s, I have focused my
studies on the BBB reactions to various experimental pathological conditions, especially epilepsy. In
one of my articles published in “Experimental Neurology” journal in 1996, I have demonstrated the
conversion of a normal barrier type brain capillary into fenestrated type in an experimental setting. My
research topics between 2000 and 2014 concentrated on the reactions of BBB to a number of
experimental conditions including sepsis, hypertension and epilepsy. The main goal of my previous
and future research is to determine putative mechanisms which may enable the treatment drugs 98% of
which are unable to pass into the brain tissue owing to a functioning BBB, to permeate into the brain
by physiological manipulations for opening the BBB for a desired period and subsequently closing the
barrier.
