During this month, we celebrate St. Valentine’s Day and honor the love we have for our significant others. Take time this month, and every month, to show love for your community as well! One part of our community that embodies all the unique and funky traits that characterize Denton is Fry Street. KDB has a long-standing relationship with Fry Street; we definitely think it’s an area worth preserving and beautifying! Check out Fry Street’s newest accessories, the Big Belly trash and recycling receptacles- and show your love by using them!

We work hard all year long to make sure that Denton is a clean place to live, work, and play. You, and thousands of volunteers like you, give generously of your time to help us accomplish that goal. We have church groups and businesses that organize special cleanups. Individuals clean up in their free time and our adopters pick up litter in their respective corners of Denton. But there’s one day a year, when we all work together in a citywide effort!

Great American Cleanup is one of KDB’s biggest annual events. In 2011, we collected more than 116 tons of trash and recycling! The date is marked on your calendar below. We are looking forward to another great year; we hope to see you there!

It’s April and what better way to enjoy the spring than by participating in Redbud Festival? Join us as a volunteer or just come and enjoy this free family event. The Festival is a home and garden show with booths showcasing a wide variety of tree and plant sales, gardening products, landscaping and home improvement items, children’s environmental exhibits and activities, and fun festival foods. We also offer a series of workshops on gardening and home improvement covering a variety of topics, including attracting wild birds to your back yard, organic gardening, and making your home more energy efficient. Don’t miss it; the date is marked on your calendar!

Many Denton residents unintentionally contribute to our goal of making and keeping Denton clean and beautiful. Just by maintaing their own yards and landscapes, they help create a lovely environment. We salute our inadvertent partners by rewarding some of them as Yard of the Month winners. You can participate by acting as a judge or by nominating your own yard, your neighbor’s, or just an attractive yard you happen to pass by. And from May to October, keep an eye out for these signs around town!

It’s officially summer! What does that bring to mind for you? We think of being out for summer vacation, running through sprinklers, and eating ice cream and barbeque! Whatever your summer activities of choice, we hope that you and your family will take advantage of the great outdoor opportunities in Denton. Visit the Square and take in a concert. Put on your swimming gear and hit the Natatorium. Or just pull up some lawn chairs in your own backyard.

One of our main priorities at KDB is community beautification. What better way to accomplish this goal than by planting trees? We have many tree programs that you may be familiar with, like Tree Giveaway and Children’s Arbor Day. The recipients for both of those programs are individuals. But did you know that KDB also distributes trees to whole neighborhoods? The NeighborWoods program is a national program presented in partnership with the Alliance for Community Trees and the Home Depot Foundation. We love this program because it brings together neighbors and volunteers as they work together to plant trees and restore urban forests! Talk to your neighbors about how you will plant and maintain the trees. Then, keep an eye on our website for the application!

Did you know that our Adopt-a-Spot program is one of the largest and most active in the state? We have over 50 adopters- individuals, families, church groups, student and civic organizations and businesses. We invite you to become part of this amazing legacy; those volunteers are responsible for picking up thousands of pounds of litter each year from Denton’s roadways! They are certainly doing their part towards keeping Denton clean and beautiful. Thank you to all our adopters; the work you do is extremely important! You can see in this photo how one adopter has personalized her spot.

It’s back to school time- a source of consternation for some and celebration for others. For the less enthusiastic among us, maybe a cool new environmental learning area or a composting program would make the reality less daunting. Many schools around Denton have these fun enhancements in part because of the KDB Environmental Education Grant Program. Every year, KDB offers educators the opportunity to earn up to $500 for their environmental projects. If you are a teacher, administrator or even an involved parent, we encourage you to be on the look out for our EEGP applications. The deadline is in November and it’s marked on your calendar!

October is one of our favorite times of year! It’s the beginning of fall, and better yet, time for the annual Community Tree Giveaway!

The Tree Giveaway began in 1998 as an effort to “re-tree Denton.” Now, 14 years later, Keep Denton Beautiful is proud to have distributed over 12,000 free trees to Denton residents through this program alone. The date of the event is marked on your calendar below. Make sure to check www.kdb.org early this month to volunteer for this event and to pre-register for your free tree. This picture is from the 2011 event.

We hope that you are taking advantage of the City of Denton’s fantastic recycling program all year round. If you are not, we hope that in the month of November, Texas Recycles Day activities will inspire you! We challenge you to be a little greener. Utilize the recycling drop-off centers around town. Take your plastic bags (even your Ziploc bags) to the grocery stores and other retailers who accept them. And recycle your electronics at Best Buy and Goodwill. Texas Recycles Day is marked on your calendar below. Get in the spirit! A young KDB volunteer demonstrates what is recyclable below.
