INTRODUCTION
This report contains the results of preliminary testwork conducted
on samples submitted by Lodi Metals Inc. to investigate production of a graphite
concentrate.
The test program and results were discussed with Mr. G. Hawley of

1. Sample Preparation and Head Analysis
6 samples of approximately 25 kg each were received for graphite
testwork. They were labelled LT1 to LT6.
Each sample was crushed to minus 6 mm and approximately 5 kg riffled
out. This was crushed to minus 6 mesh and a sample removed for head analysis.
An equal weight composite of the six samples was prepared for testwork. The
graphitic carbon contents of the samples were:

Two additional rock samples were received, Sample LTA and LTB. These
samples were crushed and sampled for Au analysis:

2. Testwork
A preliminary test was conducted following the flowsheet outlined
in Figure 1.

The minus 6 mesh ore was ground to approximately -20 mesh in a rod
mill and a graphite rougher concentrate was recovered with kerosene as collector.
The rougher concentrate was cleaned twice and sized at 100 mesh. The plus 100
mesh graphite concentrate was further upgraded by gravity separation. The results
of the test are summarized in Table 1.

Final +100 mesh concentrate grade was disappointing but recovery was good.
Rougher flotation performance was good with a 40 percent grade and 97.7 7o recovery.
Upgrading in the cleaner flotation was poor with the grade only being increased to
45 percent during the cleaner flotation.
A mineralogical examination of the +100 mesh concentrate was conducted
to identify, the liberation of the graphite grains.

There was a lot of free silicate also.
The +100 mesh concentrate was further retreated by a light regrind arid
additional gravity separation. After the additional gravity separation a +100 mesh
graphite concentrate amounting to 4.65 7o wgt overall, assaying 88.9 7. C(graphitic)
with a recovery of 60.8 7, C (graphitic) overall was obtained. The results indicated
that a high grade graphite concentrate could be obtained.
Further testwork was then conducted to establish effect of a slightly "*
finer grind, reagent modifications in the flotation and sizing and separate treatment
of different size fractions on the gravity separation. The flotation results are
summarized in Table 2.

Stage additions of collector (kerosene) and additional dispersants (Na 2 C03
and Na2 Si03 ) resulted in an increase in flotation concentrate grade to 56 'L i n the
+100 mesh fraction. Further improvement in concentrate grade should be possible with
further optimization of flotation conditions.
The +100 mesh flotation concentrate from Tests 4 and 5 were treated by
gravity separation. The results and conditions are summarized in Table 3.

Upgrading by gravity was still difficult although results were somewhat
improved in Test 5 in which a Wilfley table was used in place of a Mozley Mineral
Separator. Some additional regrinding of the concentrate may be necessary to
attain 4-90 7o carbon concentrate.
3. Discussion and Recommendations
Concentrate grades of 80-85 percent were obtained by flotation and
gravity separation. Obtaining concentrate grade above 90 7o carbon was not achieved.
89 7o graphite was achieved after a light regrind.
Additional testwork is required to optimize flotation conditions to attempt
to produce a higher grade flotation concentrate as feed to final upgrading by gravity
concentration. In the gravity separation additional testwork is required to evaluate
regrinding of a middling fraction to attempt to increase final grade.

Observations:
To upgrade the +100 mesh graphite concentrate by gravity.
The sample was ground lightly in an Abbe pebble mill.
The ground concentrate was passed over a super panner mineral separator to produce a series of concentrates and a tailing.
The products were assayed for graphitic carbon.
+100 mesh graphite concentrate of Test 1.
The untreated concentrate contained a large amount of silica grains with small graphite inclusions.
The gravity separation produced a clean silicate tailing containing some extra large graphite flakes.
