INTRODUCTION TO I.C.T AND ITS APPLICATION TO INSTRUCTIONAL

MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT.

DEFINITION OF ICTInformation and Communication Technology is an

umbrella term that include any communication device or application, that encompasses radio, television, cellular

phones, computer, network hardware and software, satellite systems among others as well as various services

and application associated with them, such as video conferencing and distance learning.

Component of ICTs

i. Hardware ii. software

iii. Data iv. Information v. Procedures

vi. People

Therefore, ICT are defined for the purpose of learning process as a diverse set of technological tools and

resources used to communicate , to create, disseminate, store and manage information.

More so, another definition of ICT is that, it is a computer based tools used by people to work with the information

and technology processing needs of an organization.

In recent years, there has been a groundswell of interest in how computers and the internet can best be addressed to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of

education at all levels and informal and non formal settings. But ICT's are more than just these old

technologies such as telephone, radio and television although now given less attention but they have a longer

& richer history as instructional tools.

Brief history of ICTThe phrase ICT's has been used by academic

researcher since the 1980's but it became popular after it was used in a report in the united kingdom by Dennis Stevenson in 1997 and in the National Curriculum for

been replaced by the broader term "Computing".

The prevalance and rapid development of information and communication (ICTs) has transformed human society from information age to knowledge age (Gal breath 2000). It is widely known that ICT, ict can be used to improve the quality of teaching and learning at any level of education. Advantages of using ICT as an instructional tools i. Through ICT, images can easily be used in teaching

and improving the retentive memory of students.

ii. ICT is of tremendous importance to learning because it engages all sense organ of learners through seeing, feeling, hearing and thinking.

iii. It provide the learner with fast and searchable access to vast amounts of information, through search engine like Google search, devil finder, yahoo search e.t.c iv. it involves more senses for perception than hearing

alone. v. it gives the students extra access to the lesson more than the volume they had in the normal classroom situation.

vi. making use of ict devices such as visual devices like projector, TV set e.t.c in class room, helps stimulate the attention of the learners vii. Through ICT, teacher can easily explain complex instructions and ensure student’s comprehension.

viii. Through ICT, teacher are able to create interactive classes and make the lesson more enjoyable, which could improve student attendance and concentration .

vix . ICT as instructional material makes learning interesting by not making learner get bored in classroom

Recommendation

Teachers are advice to be ICT compliance in other to make use of ICT in development of instructional materials

because it is believe that audio-video aids are good for stimulating attention and retention of knowledge.
