Instructions for Participants – Part 1a

You will see a list of words. Each word will be presented one at a time. After each list you will write the words that you remember on a piece of paper. Please write the last few items first then recall the rest of the list in any order. Try not to guess. You will be given a maximum of 3 min to recall as many words as possible. When everyone is ready I will start the presentation of each list.

Next you will see a list of words. Decide how certain you are that the word was previously shown in a list by writing

0 if definitely a new word, 1 if not sure if new or old, or 2 if definitely an old word (in other

words previously presented). Write your answer next to each word on the list.

Test 1Write: 0 if new; 1 if not sure; 2 if old

Scoring• First, we will score each of your recalled lists

I will show the correct answers with an extra bolded word that was not on the list (called a “lure” word)– Compare the lists and underline each correctly

recalled old word– Place an X beside each incorrectly recalled new word– If you wrote down the bolded word, then circle it

(and mark with an X)

Then:– Count number of correctly recalled old words (out of

105)– Count number of incorrectly recalled new words– Count number of “lure” words (i.e. the bolded word

at bottom of correct list) (out of 7)

You will again see a similar series of lists of words. Each word will be presented one at a time. After each list you will write the words that you remember on a piece of paper. Please write the last few items first then recall the rest of the list in any order. Try not to guess. Try not to recall words that are similar in meaning. You will be given a maximum of 3 min to recall as many words as possible. When everyone is ready I will start the presentation of each list.

For the Researcher: Analyses• Recall– # correct/105 = % correct– # lures/7 = % false memory– # lures/# new words = FM for lures

• Recognition– For blue (old): # 2s/14 = % correct id as old word– For red (lure): # 2s/7 = % false memory– For black (new): # 2s/21 = % incorrect id as old word

• Data analyses– Students enter 12 data points into Excel– Do above calculations to get %s– Calculate averages and SDs for new % columns– Give students data – they produce graph for lab
