Chapter 5 Project

5 Products that were released but failed in the market.

The Sony Betamax failed because of the VHS. When VHS was released it cost less than betamax, it could hold 2 hours of footage compared to betamax’s 1, and was better quality. Because of this Betamax really didn’t stand a chance in the market.

The United States Football league failed after the decision to face teams in the NFL. Most of the teams quit because they felt they couldn’t compete. Leading to the league collapsing and never being heard from again.

RJ Reynolds Smokeless cigarettes were taken off the market after doing very poorly due them tasting very badly, and because they were said to be even more unhealthy than normal cigarettes.

Coke was starting to lose market share to pepsi is the early 80’s, and in an attempt to win it back coke cancelled their production line of original coke and only starting producing “new” coke. Supposedly, this new coke wasn’t that bad, but people were furious that they couldn’t buy original coke and starting boycotting the new coke. Because of this the new coke failed and original coke was brought back.

Colgate kitchen Entrées were a brand extension attempt by the popular toothpaste manufacturer. But apparently people didn’t like the idea of eating food with the same brand name of what they brush their teeth with. Because of this the Entrée’s failed and were pulled off the shelves.

5 Products that are out right now that I believe will fail

DVD players have dominated the home movie market for decades, but due to blueray, I feel that the player will soon be pulled off the market because it simply can not compete with the quality.

The segway is a cool device but I feel that it is incredibly over priced and there just isn’t a big enough consumer base of people interested in buying it. Because of this is feel that the segwaywill flop and cease to be produced.

The Microsoft Zune is an attempt by Microsoft to compete with the iPod. But since the Zune doesn’t work with iTunes which is the largest and most convenient music store on the web, I feel that Microsoft will not be able to compete with Apple and will have to cancel production.

The kinect for the Xbox 360 has tons of potential, but the games released for the system so far have not impressed Xbox gamers. If Xbox doesn’t do something soon I feel that the kinect will end up in disaster after how much money and effort was sunk into development.

Between the failing economy and sky high gas prices, the amount of people buying hummers has severely reduced. Unless hummer releases a more gas efficient model I feel the brand may fail.
