St. C Sweethearts By: Olivia DiBetta
We, at the Red Devil Dispatch
have decided that: the cutest couple at
St. Clairsville High School is Brian Zani
and Madison Keenan. In true Valentine's
Day spirit, we learned some more
about this sweet pair. The two
juniors met through St. C Singers,
which they've both been a part of
since their freshman year, and
started dating by "playing the guitar
together." Aside from music, they
like to spend time together by
playing Xbox, and they agree that
one of the best Valentines Day gifts
you can give or receive is food.
Looking past the superficial
hype that Valentine's Day gets, it's
important to remember to show the
people who are special to you just
how much you care. Brian and
Madison's advice for staying in a happy
relationship is to always stay faithful
and give each other space when it's
necessary. Happy Valentine's Day!

In baseball and softball
three strikes and you’re out, but
in bowling a strike is a good
thing. For the first year in
St. Clairsville, bowling is now a
sport. So I sat down and
interviewed Summer Stephens
about the bowling team this
season.
“People should really
come out and join the bowling
team, it’s a lot of fun and you get
to meet a lot of people from other
schools.” Stephens said when
asked about why people should
come out. When asked about this
season she said “We bonded a lot
as a team this year.” One of the
most important topics is who is
their biggest rival? “Probably
Bridgeport or Union Local
because they bowl really high
scores and the last time we
played Union Local we had to buy
them pizza because they beat us.”
The bowling season is
coming to an end soon, and much
to the player’s delight they are
finally getting their letters. Good
luck on the rest of the season!
The Lady Devil’s
“Re-bound Back” By: Brooke Robinson
The St.C Lady Devils’
Varsity Basketball team is half-way
through their season; their current
record being 10-10. In order to find
out about the team’s progress, we
asked sophomore, Alexis St.Clair a
few questions.
RDD: What has been the team’s
toughest challenge this year?
Alexis: Playing the third quarter is
always hard for us; we have no
problem with the whole first half.
For some reason it always gets us;
we kind of play slow and give up a
few things, but I think we’re getting
better at it.
RDD: Has the team completed any
goals yet? If so, which ones?
Alexis: Of course, even if we never
established them as official “goals”
we definitely have. Our main one
this year was to be better than last
year. We’ve reduced our turnovers;
won more games already, and have
had better shooting percentages.
Also I think we are all much closer
than last year too. Another goal
we’re working for is to win OVAC’s.
We have to keep playing well to get
it though. So we’ll have to see.
Given that the Lady Devils
have already improved from last
season, it’s apparent they have
already reached some of their goals.

Recently, the Varsity St. C
Wrestling team won runner up at the
America’s Best Value Inn
Tournament, finished 4th at
Nelsonville-York, and placed 4th at
the Barnesville Tournament. They
competed in OVAC’s on January 17th,
through January 19th. We interviewed
Sophomore Matt Carnes, to find out
some information regarding the ex-
pectations of the outcome.
RDD: Do you think your coach has
prepared you well enough for OVAC’s
Matt: I think he’s prepared us well
enough; he pushes us hard in
practice.
RDD: What is your personal goal at
OVAC’s?
Matt: To place as high as I can.
RDD: What do you expect to be
your biggest challenge?
Matt: Just simply wrestling and
knowing how to wrestle.
RDD: With previous success this
year, do you think your team will
place first, and why?
Matt: I think we have a good
opportunity because everyone gets
points. We have some pretty good
guys.
At the end of the tournament, St. C
came in 2nd place.

The St. Clairsville basketball team is having a great season. They are 11-1 for the season. They are undefeated over the 2013 year. Their first game of 2013 was against Harrison Central, they won the game 60-43. Then they played Bellaire beating them by a land slide with a score of 95-42. Next would be Steubenville at home. They would beat them 69-43. Union Local would be their next challenge, they would keep the win streak going by a vic-tory of 68-45. Their closest game they have played trough the month of January
would be against Indian creek, squeezing out a victory 66-55. They would play their rivals Martins Ferry, beating them by a score of 76-42. And the last game they have played would be Edison keeping their 10 game winning streak alive by a score of 86-26. "The team looks as if they could make it back to the final four if not farther." Says Junior Dylan Panepucci. He also says "We're a close group of guys that just love to play, that is what makes us so tough to beat" said Dylan Panepucci.
In High School, sports have
always been the center of attention, so
why not take a look into more academic
activities? We recently interviewed
Sonu Tadipatri, who is a member of the
St. Clairsville High School Quiz Team, to
get a look at what goes on with this
group.
RDD: “So Sonu, could you explain to me
what the Quiz Team is?’
SONU: “ It’s a team with about ten to
twelve people and we get questions
about anything. We have practices
Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunch. We
prepare for matches against other
schools.”
RDD: “ What made you decide to join
the quiz team?”
SONU: “ Well it just seemed interesting
because of the concept. It’s like a game
show where they ask you different
questions each time.”
RDD: “ What do you enjoy most about
being on the Quiz Team?”
SONU: “Just the people. All of them are
fun to be around. It’s good to talk to
different people once in a while.”
RDD: “ Have there been any funny or
crazy moments that have happened
while you were with the team?”
SONU: “ In the last match, a lot of people
wore sunglasses and drank peace tea to
scare the other team. We were trying to
be really serious and it was really funny.
We also love to joke around with Mr.
Sleutz”
RDD: “Do you think that being on the
quiz team has benefitted you in any
way?”
SONU:“ Yes because I’m learning a lot of
things from the questions. I’m learning
something new every practice.”
RDD: “ What is your favorite memory
from being on the quiz team?”
SONU: “ It’s probably when we won my
first match on JV. That was exciting.”
Academic activity is booming at
St. Clairsville High School. The Red Devil
Dispatch wishes good luck to the Team
and the rest of their season!

February, Valentine’s Day, it can all be summed up in three words: money, sappy, and unfortunate. Is seems that every month, there is a new reason to why relationships are painful; most of which generally deal with the fiscal side of things. This time, however, there is definitely a major problem with having a “special someone” for the fourteenth, and it all comes back to that little detail that so many unlucky man forget, women come with a price tag! That price tag is also, so inconveniently different for each girl. It is like picking items from a shelf. The ones on the top are more expensive than the ones on the lower tiers. Of course, there are always loopholes, which can help a man on a budget reach higher on that shelf.
The iconic holiday is traditionally filled with bouquets of flowers, chocolates, and elegant dinners, making the night one of romance. Romance, however, could be considered a synonym for expensive, a depleted pocket book and a girl expecting the night to be outdone on the follow-up date. That leaves a guy penniless and flustered about what to do with his girl next time. She will be expecting a huge surprise and will only be left disappointed when he fails to provide. That poses the question of how he manages to keep her interested while also keeping his paycheck, especially on the holiday of love itself.
What it seems women care about is, as they say “cute, adorable” stuff. That does not have to come with a cost at all; in fact, all it requires is a guy with wit about him, that or one who knows how to operate Google. Instead of taking her out to a dinner where he will spend every bit of thirty to fifty dollars, or a movie, which prohibits every bit of physical contact and vocal interaction, a man can keep her close and keep his money closer by playing upon her feminine emotions. Nothing attracts a girl more than a guy who is willing to make himself look foolish by going through a charade that directly avoids the matter at hand to amuse her with “cute” antics. On Valentine’s Day, a guy can follow a couple easy steps to a night of success without the hefty bills to pay. Number one: Compliment her…on everything! The more she feels like the guy is impressed, the less she has to complain about later. Who honestly wants to deal with all the yapping about how she was not pleased with the dinner, or the waitress, or whatever? Number two: Always take her some place free, like a park or garden. The man can then pitch the argument that he was trying to be romantic and soothing, and she will fall for something like that, allowing the financial situation to go way over her head. It is so easy to fool a girl with the “oh, I
just wanted to be alone in the moonlight with you” act. That same act can actually be applied in a multitude of scenarios; it works for just about anything. Finally, number three: keep her talking. The longer she talks, probably about herself or other women, the less he has to worry about occupying her. Females love to bash other girls as much as they criticize themselves; so letting her talk with only the occasional head nod avoids both direct confrontation and large wads of cash.
At the end of the night, both parties are happy. She feels like her Valentine’s Day was Romanic, and she got a chance to vent as she gleamed with flattery, while he walks out boasting as much money with which he started and the lack of a headache from her trying to be difficult. It is much like mutual agreement. The guy saves money and avoids an ear piercing and annoying argument, and she gets an abundance of possibly false compliments.
Each side gets exactly what it wants!

Carlee Gillespie was chosen for athlete of the month for her amazing athletic abilities. She plays three sports for St. Clairsville, all of them varsity. I caught up with Carlee for an interview for the Red Devil Dispatch. Here are those questions and answers. RDD: In what sports do you participate? What is your favorite? Carlee: Soccer, softball, and basketball. I like them all but my favorite would be soccer. RDD: What is your strongest asset on the basketball team? Carlee: Defense and picking the ball off the other team to get a fast break and an easy basket. RDD: What is the most embarrassing
moment on the court? Carlee: It would definitely be the time when I scored on the wrong basket... RDD: What are the most points you have scored in a game? Carlee: In a varsity game the most this year is 17 points. RDD: How do you prepare for a game? Carlee: I'm very superstitious that everything has to be the same such as me and Ashten's pre game ritual rubbing our knee high lucky smiley face socks together. RDD: What's the worst call a ref had ever made? Carlee: When I had possession of the ball and I made a basket but the other team called a timeout right before I made on of the game tying basket.
The 2012 Wrestling OVAC 5th
place Heavy weight, Corey Ernest, came
back to OVACs this year with vengeance.
On Saturday January 19th the 2013
OVACs were held at WesBanco Arena.
Ernest won the Heavy Weight Champion
Title with a score of 3-2 after triple over
time in Sudden Victory. I sat down with
him to find out why and how he does it.
RDD: What was your reaction when you
were named Heavy Weight Champion?
ERNEST: “It felt awesome, it was an
amazing feeling , knowing you’re the best
Heavy Weight in the Ohio Valley Athletic
Conference. I was so happy.”
RDD: How did that accomplishment
compare to the football runner-up title?
ERNEST: “Football is more of a team sport,
wrestling being more individual, with a
team, but both were great.”
RDD: Who is your biggest inspiration?
ERNEST: “My parents, because no matter
what I do they're always there for me.
They say if I think I can’t be beat, I won’t
be. Have confidence in yourself.”
RDD: Who is your biggest fan?
ERNEST: “My grandma”
RDD: Do you have any wrestling plans
after graduation?
ERNEST: “No, I’m playing football for West
Liberty.”
RDD: What’s the craziest thing you’ve
done this year?
ERNEST: “A lot. I got in a fight in a
tournament, on the mat, here. The other
guy got kicked out of OVACs and I didn't . I
was crazy. Such an adrenaline rush.”
RDD: How bad is your ‘senioritis’?
ERNEST: It’s pretty bad actually, I just
don't feel like going to class. Ever.
RDD: Will your younger brother follow in
your foot steps?
ERNEST: “I hope he does. I'm trying to get
him to wrestle, we’ll need a heavy weight
after I graduate. Hopefully he does better
than me. I would hate to have a big
brother and be in his shadow.”
RDD: Do you have any advice for future
St. C wrestlers?
Ernest: “The harder you go in practice and
the more you commit the better you'll be
in reaching your goals.”
Congratulations Corey Ernest and
good luck on your future endeavors! Your
presence at St. C High School will be
missed.

Nearly two months after the tragedy in Newtown Connecticut, democratic lawmakers push for more stringent gun control laws but are met with much resistance from both republicans and the American voters. While parents worry about the safety of their children and concern grows for loved ones, the people remain leery that gun control is the proper resolution. After 2007 with the Virginia Tech shooting, nineteen percent of citizens felt the need for stricter gun laws, that number raised to twenty-one percent after the Tucson Arizona massacre, and climbed up to twenty-two given the latest disaster. However, seventy-one percent of people still believe that greater gun laws will not be able to prevent the next Sandy Hook Tragedy, saying that such people “will always find the guns” needed to enact a violent crime.
Recently, President Obama released several proposals on the matter of gun control, the most popular of which, with ninety-one percent positivity was requiring criminal background checks on all gun buyers. The compromise limits access of weapons to common criminals yet allows responsible owners to maintain firearms. Others accepted ideas included providing government funded services to mentally ill individuals who “show violent tendencies” and improving the enforcement on existing laws. Lawmakers also discussed extending the proposals to encompass mandating mental-health checks on people purchasing firearms as well as extending the background checks to anyone buying ammunition. While, people agree in the need for changes to the current weapon distribution, few are in favor of armed guards being placed in the schools, banning of high capacity clips and assault rifles, and reducing “access to violent movies and video games.” The least popular suggestion, having been dissuaded upon quite quickly was the idea of allowing teachers to become armed on school grounds.
Demographically, citizens agree on the background checks but judge the other proposals extremely differently. In one instance, the majority of women favor assault weapons ban by a margin of twenty-six points, while men oppose it by four. Democrats on a whole support the motion by forty-nine percent, but Republicans contest with a thirty-two-point opposition. While conservatives are opposed to the specific notion, it is worth being made aware that sixty-five percent of gun owners are Republicans.
On average, voters are twice as likely to say that they would feel more comfortable putting more guns in the hands of law-abiding citizens, rather than a complete ban on the weapons. In another poll, voters considered, by an eleven-point margin that protecting the constitutional right of owning a gun was more important than protecting citizens from gun violence. On the same thought, by a vast fifty percent margin, Americans believe gun holders have the right to keep the information regarding their permit private. In a recent scenario, a New York newspaper published the names and addresses of residents holding gun permits, which sparked mixed feelings over the topic being that the information could become harmful to the holders.
Gun reform is speculated to actually pass through congress this year with a seventy-seven percent certainty, higher than even immigration reform. However, sixty-five percent of gun owners publicly state that should the government side in favor of total ban, they will defy the decision and keep their firearms. It remains to be seen what will become of the vigorous battle for American rights and safety.

The Angry Beaver: This One’s for the Girls
The Thoughts, the Views, and the Opinions of One Angry Mammal
By: Addy Beaver
We all know them. We all despise them. So why do
we try to be like them? Yes, I'm talking about the Stupids. The
girls you see who flip their hair, giggle at sucky jokes and
whose favorite accessory is their own bare skin. The girls who
try to emulate celebrities such as Paris Hilton, Brittany Spears
or Lindsay Lohan. As much as we cannot stand the Stupids,
why do we slip up and catch ourselves acting like them?
Draping ourselves over the closest guy, flirting with
everything that has a pulse, showing way too much skin and
even purposely acting dumb, like it's cute or something. If the
women who fought so hard for our rights and paved the road
of class and dignity for women saw how we were acting now,
they'd be rolling over in their graves.
Let's take a look at exhibit A.) Audrey Hepburn. Not
only is she a very talented actress, but she showed up to the
set every day, on time and knew all of the material she needed
to know for said day. Knowing she was so talented, she was
courteous, humble, and elegant. She didn't have the ego of
celebrities today. She didn't think she was better than anyone
else. In fact, in her retirement from show business, she
traveled and volunteered in foreign, poverty-stricken
countries, like Africa. She was humble, elegant, and had
enough respect for herself to hide all parts of her body that
should be hidden, and leave just enough to the imagination to
still make it look attractive without being prude. This lady had
class.
Now, onto exhibit B.) Gabrielle "Coco" Chanel. Born
into poverty, raised in an orphanage, and built an empire of a
fashion line that all began with straw hats. Chanel is my idol.
She was classy, elegant, brutally honest, and didn't let society
change her views and preferences. She didn't let men walk all
over her, and put her work before love. She didn't let guys
change her ways or put them before her empire. When Chanel
first began her boutique, women wore uncomfortable dresses
with corsets, obnoxiously huge hats that had to be pinned
into the hair, and were shown as prizes instead of loves. She
changed that. She took a chance, and revolutionized fashion,
changing it forever. She wore pants and blazers, and "men
clothes". She made fashion realistic for women around the
globe. She didn't marry or date for money or status. She didn't
allow herself to be used. She was classy and strong and dared
to be different, even when it was frowned upon by society.
Are you seeing a pattern here? Women were made to
be strong, classy, and elegant. So many women fought and
died and would have given up anything for the rights we have
today, and so many young girls are taking that for granted.
Cover up your skin. Stand up for yourself. Don't be afraid to
be alone. You are given so many opportunities. Take them.
Take all of them. Go to college. Run for President. Fall in love.
Don't walk down the street, staggering in heels that are too
high, carrying a purse that is too big, dating boys who are too
bad and trying to conform to what society wants you to be. If
you want pink hair, dye it pink. If you want to shave your
head, shave it. If you want to go au-natural with your make
up, put down the concealer. Don't let your hair length, or the
amount of make up, or brands you wear be what defines how
beautiful you are. Let you define that. Beautiful women are
strong, and classy and dare to take chances. Do what makes
you happy in life. Respect yourself. Be humble. Be nice. But
most of all, don't be a Stupid.

Cell Phones By: Riley Bartsh
Apps, Music, Facetiming, and Internet, these
are key components to today’s cellphones that
we can not seem to live without. Cellphones
have become a crucial part of our daily life

past or “ ghetto “ phones as we would call
them, and see just how far technology has
come. So take a moment and look up from that

Lessons from Steubenville By: Cody L. Jackson
Knowing right from wrong is something we have all been taught since we had any comprehension skills. Now, we need those skills more than ever especially as social media plays such a large part in our everyday lives. Situations like this arise too often nowadays with people not using their heads when using social media especially when people go to parties and get drunk.
First off, underage drinking is terrible and if you need alcohol to have fun then you have a sad life. There are other things to do then go out and illegally drink, it’s repulsive. Situations like this have become more prominent now that the situation in Steubenville has become more popular. I am in no way taking sides on the issue at hand but if there was no alcohol at the party. I believe that all of those drinking at the party, including the alleged victim, should be charged with
underage drinking. When you post photos or talk about your awesome parties, drinking, and “swag,” then you need help. Posting photos of you drinking doesn’t make you cool, it just means that there is nothing better to do in your life other than drink. If you feel differently then so be it, but you’re missing out on life.
When people are drunk they often make stupid decisions that they wouldn’t make when they’re sober. A perfect case of this is the Steubenville alleged rape case. I’m sure the suspects wouldn’t even think of doing such a heinous crime when they’re in the right mindset but when drunk, you make stupid decisions.
If anything, I just hope you make good decisions and don’t do anything stupid. Especially, don’t drive drunk.

The new horror
movie out is Mama and
being that in the past few
years hundreds of horror
films came out this one
stands out. Within the first
five minutes I already
jumped a few times and
halfway through I couldn’t
even guess how it would
end. Most horror films
you’re able to guess who’s
going to die and how it’s
going to end, plus it usually
isn’t even scary! Mama is
one of those movies that
keep you guessing until the
end and after it ends you just
sit there like did that
actually just happen? Oh and
Mama is the creepiest thing
I’ve seen in years, I was
scarred a bit. Also don’t
drive the road to Bethany
alone, at night, where there’s
a cliff called Ghost Hallow
Viaducts yeah let’s just say
I’d never been so happy to
see annoying other drivers
in my life.

My Sister’s keeper
Recently I broke my number one rule when it comes to reading, which is to always read the book before seeing the motion picture version. I can honestly say that I have never seen a film that was better than the book it was based off of in any way, shape, or form.
What is the spell breaking movie I saw first, you ask? My sister's keeper: a heroic tale of a young girl genetically designed to be the perfect donor for her sister, Kate. Kate was diagnosed with leukemia, and her families efforts to save her life resulted in making the first "designer baby," Anna. The movie was largely told from Anna's point of view, because, of Anna's decision to sue her parents for medial emancipation, which was a spectacular trait for the film. For those of you who
know me, you know I have a very high pain tolerance. You could break my arm, and I would not shed a tear, but pop titanic in the DVD player, and I will cry like it really happened to me. Therefore, me crying in a movie is my sign that it was worth watching. That is exactly what happened when I watched My Sisters Keeper. It was emotionally stimulating and entertaining; however, I feel so guilty for breaking my "rule," I immediately read the book. About a third of the book's information was in the movie. I felt like it was a completely different story. The book was told from every single character's point of view. There was so much more to the plot. My absolute favorite thing about the book was that every character had his or her own font; fonts that matched
personalities as well as fonts can. My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult was one of the best books I have ever read, and that is saying something. It will forever hold a spot on my shelf.

3. Preheat oven to 325 degrees F (165 degrees C). In a metal bowl over a pan of simmering water, melt white chocolate chips with half-and-half, stirring occasionally until smooth.
4. In a large bowl, mix together cream cheese and 1/2 cup sugar until smooth. Beat in eggs one at a time. Blend in vanilla and melted white chocolate. Pour half of batter over crust. Spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over batter. Pour remaining cheesecake batter into pan, and again spoon 3 tablespoons raspberry sauce over the top. Swirl batter with the tip of a knife to create a marbled effect.
5. Bake for 55 to 60 minutes, or until filling is set. Cool, cover with plastic wrap, and refrigerate for 8 hours before removing from pan. Serve with remaining raspberry sauce.

This summer, eighth-grade
history teacher, Mrs. Steele will be taking
a group of students on a World War II
tour of Europe. The group will visit the
cities of London, Paris, and Berlin. It may
take a three day extension to the Munich
area. It is visiting many major historical
sites including Churchill’s WWII bunker,
the Normandy beach where the D-Day
invasion was launched, the site of the
Battle of the Bulge, and the S.S.
Headquarters in Berlin. If the group
takes the tour extension, it will visit the
concentration camp Dachau and
Hitler’s vacation home, the Eagle’s Nest.
This trip differs from the 2010 trip in
that it is mainly about the military
history of the Second World War. The
2010 trip in which I participated
highlighted the Holocaust and the
devastation it caused. It included Berlin,
Warsaw, Poland; Krakow, Poland, and
Prague, in the Czech Republic. We visited
horrific concentration camps such as
Auschwitz, which was a very moving
experience. On the other hand, the
coming trip will cover the movement of
the Easy Company throughout
continental Europe and the battles that
they fought. Mrs. Steele stated, “It will be
an exciting trip, we have a good group of
kids going, and it should be a complete
departure from what we did last time. I
am excited to see how it turns out.”

St. C Goes to Europe! By: Alex Madzia
Bravo, Argo! By: Brendan Ryan
The setting for Argo took place at the beginning of the Iranian Hostage Crisis, which lasted from November of 1979 to January of 1981, in Tehran, Iran. There were 72 original hostages. Of those 72, six escaped to Canadian and Swedish embassies, while the rest continued to stay for 444 days. The screenplay was very colorful, mostly because of the language (mostly why it is rated R) and a Middle Eastern market scene, which added to the effect. Ben Affleck starred as Tony Mendez, a C.I.A. operative called in to help with the conflict, who played as the protagonist in the plot in this well-performed production, along with John Goodman as John Chambers, the producer in the fake Tehran film. The refugees were given false passports to escape and avoid being caught. This is basically a movie within a movie, but the movie made in Iran was fake. The group of the six refugees only pretended to scout for a movie to escape from Tehran. I would give it 4.8 out of 5 stars.

The History of President’s Day By: Gracie Furbee
Presidents' Day, which is observed on the third Monday of February, honors Abraham Lincoln, George Washington, and all other past Presidents of the United States of America. We see it as a three day weekend, but that was not its original purpose originally established in 1885 to recognize President George Washington. It was officially called “Washington’s Birthday” by the federal government. Traditionally celebrated on February 22, which was Washington’s actual day of birth, the holiday became popularly known as Presidents’ Day after it was moved as part of 1971’s Uniform Monday Holiday Act, an attempt to create more three-day weekends for the nation’s workers. While several states still have individual holidays honoring the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, Presidents’ Day is now mostly viewed as a day to celebrate all U.S. presidents past and present.

Adele is #1, Again! By: Noah Roscoe
You've probably heard songs from Adele on 'Kiss FM' or maybe even on the television. If you haven't, you'll be able to see her on the most sold album charts of 2012, for the second time! Adele's hit album 21 rocketed straight to the top of the charts, blowing any competition out of the water. 21 stunningly sold 4.41 million copies with Taylor Swift's album Red took in an
impressive 3.11 million for being released in October. Having a 3 year singing career singed with a major recording company, it's very impressive to have taken "Top Album Sales" two years in a row. This is probably not the last time you'll here about Adele too. This power house singer still has a few things up her sleeve.

Valentine’s Day has been
around as long as anyone can
remember. But where did it come
from? Who came up with the idea of
taking an entire day to celebrate love?
The idea of Valentine’s Day was
originally named after a priest named
Saint Valentine who served during the
third century in Rome. When the
Emperor of Rome, Emperor Claudius II,
outlawed marriage of young men
because he thought single men made
better soldiers, Valentine secretly
continued to perform marriages for
young couples. After his actions were
discovered, Valentine was put to death.
Even though the date of Valentine’s
Day was supposed to be made for Saint
Valentine, it quickly became known as
the day to celebrate love. Along with
the United States, Valentine’s Day is
also celebrated in Mexico, The United
Kingdom, France, Canada, and
Australia.
The first Valentines were sent as far
back as the early 1400’s. The oldest
known Valentine was a love poem
written by the Duke of Orleans, Charles,
while he was imprisoned in the Tower
of London.
Valentine’s Day is the second holiday
with the most cards sent, following
Christmas. Approximately 150 million
Valentine’s Day cards are sent each
year.
Take some time this year to show
your loved ones or your special honey
that you love them! Chocolates,
flowers, a dinner for two, or a simple “I
Love You” card can say a lot to remind
that special someone just how much he
or she means to you.
Magic: The Gathering By: Tyler Caldwell
Magic: The Gathering is a TCG (Trading Card Game), actually the first of its kind. It was created by Richard Garfield, and introduced in 1993 by the company Wizards of the Coast. The game not only presents amazing gameplay mechanics, it also features an intriguing lore to back the ever expanding card game. Each duel in the card game represents a battle between “Planeswalkers” or the highest ranking wizards in the Magic story. You are a Planeswalker (as is your opponent) who can control one or many elements. Red represents fire and lightning, blue water and wind, green the forests and nature, black chaos and death, and finally white being the polar opposite of black, with it being the representation of birth and order. In order to win you must either get your opponent to zero life points from his or her twenty, that both you and your enemy begins with, or you can get rid of all of their cards, along the way you will encounter instants, sorceries, and creatures. With over 11,210 cards to make a fully customizable 60 card deck their will never be a dull moment in the experience. No matter if
it’s sanctioned competitive play, or tabletop fun with your friends it will always be a great time with a fully immersive game, especially because of its fully fleshed out and beautifully crafted lore.

The St. C Singers have been working for days towards their first competition. It will be held on January 19th, and lo-
cated at Shawnee State University in Portsmouth, Ohio.
To find out more about the show, we interviewed Senior, Kayla Carnes.
“The seniors all came up with the theme together, and it represents a dream turning into a nightmare”, stated Kayla.
Following this competition comes five other competitions, located at these high schools: Riverside, Solon, Cuyahoga
Falls, Buckeye Local, and The Polish Club.
Kayla expressed her opinion about this year’s group; “It’s definitely new, with a new director and everything but it’s
a good new! A great way to end my senior year.”
There will be a showcase at the end of competition season, where the St. C Singers will perform for the final time this
year.

Dragon’s World The dragons slowly formed their world to their liking. Some were creating mountains, while others were
creating streams and forests. They created and shaped their world like sculptors working on a statue. Due to their
nearly limitless power and magic, it took them a mere few weeks to finish creating their world. Many of the dragons
were exhausted once their work was completed. Some of the weakest dragons were so tired that they decided to
take an extremely long rest. Some of them transformed themselves into the wind, others changed into trees. This
way, they could rest for as long as they pleased, and they were still able to contribute to their new home. These
dragons would play a very important role after several centuries had passed, even though they did not know it at
the time.
To be continued in March…

"The Eye Tribe"
By: John Busak
Have you ever wanted to control complex technology with only your mind? Well, have I got something for you! The
Eye Tribe is a new control method devised for mobile devices that allows you to input commands by reading the movement
of your eyes. By capturing the footage of the user through the front camera a processing your eyes' movement using complex
algorithms, the Eye Tribe can capture this movement with razor sharp accuracy. What this innovation will lead to in the
future is yet to be seen, but prolonged use will cause quite the headache.

Dear Garry,
What should I make my next years resolution?
Dear New Year’s Baby,
I don't make New Year's Resolutions. I think they're
pointless. Honestly, I cant see why anyone would only strive
to improve themselves when the calendars roll over, aside
from to make one's self feel good. If you're serious about
improving yourself, you have to commit to it, no matter what
time of year it happens to be.
Dear Garry,
This clerk at the store totally ripped me off, so I stole
a couple items in return. Should I have done that?
Dear ‘Stealers’ Fan,
Wait, what? Why are you telling me?! Err... Either
way, theft is still theft. Now go sit in the corner and think
about what you've done.
Dear Garry,
What should I do for this coming Valentine's Day?
Dear Forever alone,
Spend it alone. If you're an extrovert, well, crying
yourself to sleep isn't that bad.
Dear Garry,
My friend says smooth jazz sucks. How can I prove
him wrong?
Dear Jazzy Fella,
What?! Smooth jazz is the best jazz! He's a lost cause.
Just forget he exists.
