In The Beginning – GODGenesis 1:1

Grace Community Church2013

Genesis 1:1 In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.

1. How are we here?2. Why are we here?3. What is wrong with things?4. Where is our hope?

John 1:1–3 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made.

Hebrews 11:3

3 By faith we understand that the universe was created by the word of God, so that what is seen was not made out of things that are visible.

Doesn’t modern science refute all this?

Faith and Science

• Popular view of science – objective, unbiased, rational, concerned with evidence, based upon reason.

• Popular view of faith – subjective, biased, irrational, unconcerned with evidence, and exercised in the absence of reason.

Psalm 19

• Science – Study of General Revelation (vs. 1-6)• Theology – Study of Special Revelation (vs. 7-

14)

Hasn’t science proven God does not exist or at least that God is irrelevant?

US National Academy of Sciences

“Science is a way of knowing about the natural world. It is limited to explaining the natural world through natural causes. Science can say nothing about the supernatural. Whether God exists or not is a question about which science is neutral.”

“I think the probability of a supernatural creator existing is very very low.”

- Richard Dawkins

“500 years of science have demonstrated that God, that vague notion, is not likely.”

- Lawrence Krauss, a theoretical physicist at Arizona State University

“We are each free to believe what we want, and my view is that the simplest explanation is there is no God. No one created the universe and no one directs our fate. This

leads me to a profound realization: there is probably no heaven, and no

afterlife either. We have this one life to appreciate the grand design of the universe, and for that I am

extremely grateful.” - Stephen Hawking

Romans 1:19-2119 For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. 20 For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. 21 For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.

God exists and He is not silent.Hebrews 1:1–4 1 Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, 2 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. 3 He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, 4 having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.
