Kidz Chronicle Dear Parent/Guardians
Neon Civvies Day Mrs Strydom and Mrs Heine with the rest of the Grade 2 teachers organised a spectacular Civvies Day. The idea of the Neon Civvies Day on the 25th October was to embrace the colours that come with Spring, as well give back to our Mother Earth.
Children and staff took part in a colour run, af-ter that each class planted a Portulacaria afra, also known as a spekboom, in a beautifully paint-ed tyre or pot holder.
This also allowed them the opportunity to deco-rate the area either with painted rocks or other creative, colourful concepts to enhance their allocated area.
Thanks to all staff, children and the organising team. We had a phenomenal NEON CIVVIES Day!

URGENT: WARNING about LEAN
Spekboom The scientific name for "Spekboom" is Portulacaria afra. This plant holds great significance for many reasons:
1. It improves the quality of the air we breathe and helps fight climate change. Spekboom is a succulent that helps fight air pollution. It has the ability to ‘sequester’ or capture four to ten tons of carbon per hectare! Es-sentially, it acts as a carbon sponge, absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and turning it into plant matter. Excess carbon in the atmosphere is responsible for global warming. The more carbon we can remove from the air and return to the ground, the better.
2. Spekboom is a proudly South African plant. Spekboom is indigenous to the Eastern Cape where South Afri-can elephants consider the plant a delicacy.
3. It’s water-wise. No time to water your garden? Spekboom is a water-wise plant that’s ideal for low-maintenance gardens. This drought-resistant plant can survive on just 250-350mm of water a year!
4. Suitable for all seasons and weather conditions. The Spekboom has a photosynthetic mechanism which al-lows it to adapt to both rainforest-like conditions and semi-arid conditions, making it incredibly adaptable and suited to almost any garden.
It’s easy to grow. Simply cut or break off a piece of a spekboom, let it dry out for one or two days and then stick it in the ground. Give it a little water every few days and you’ll soon have a new spekboom plant of your own. Make sure you don’t give it too much water or it will rot.
Each class had an opportunity to decorate their designated planting space. In true CityKidz style the outcome was fabulous and each class showed off their creativity and true capabilities.
Dear Parents It is very important to know what children are up to, the social trends and for us all to know what to watch out for. There is a drug called Lean. Have you heard of it? What Makes Lean So Dangerous? Lean– is also known as sizzurp, purple stuff, drank, barre, and purple Sprite Purple Drank. The cough syrup-soda-hard mixture is known in popular culture by many names. The concoction’s been glorified in songs like Three 6 Ma-fia’s “Sippin on Some Sizzurp” and in lyrics from Far East Movement’s 4 times platinum hit “Like a G6” (sippin sizzurp in my ride / like Three 6) and Lil Wayne’s “Turn on the Lights” (I’m purple drank forever). Countless celebrities, in-cluding Rob Kardashian, Soulja Boy, and Justin Bieber, have posed with the drink on Instagram. It seems, in recent years, pop culture has forgotten that lean is still a dangerous drug and potentially fatal.
What does it do? The codeine, which is an opiate, produces a feeling of euphoria. The cough syrup also contains a drug called promethazine, which acts as a sedative. The drug codeine is a dissociative drug with similar effects to Ketamine, which causes a kind of out of body experience. Serious side effects of Codeine include slowed heartbeat, shallow breathing, blurred vision, agitation, and hallucinations.
When the kids talk about doing it, they talk about leaning on syrup, because if you sip on it all day long it's like getting very drunk. And they literally have to lean on something to stand up. We all know that taking opiates is dangerous and can lead to addiction, overdose, and death.
Teens in particular are abusing the drink because it’s easily accessible to them. They can buy all of the ingredients used to make the dangerous drink over the counter. PLEASE READ the two articles attached to this newsletter to be better informed.
