IDI has been a part of land mobile radio interconnection for decades. Spring probe based connectors have become the industry standard for high performance accessory interconnect. Their compliance-to-length ratio provides tolerance absorp-tion and compensates for connector flex; since accessory connectors often take the brunt of impact with vehicles and other obstacles, the ruggedness and flexibility of probe based connectors is particularly useful. Spring probes can be through-hole, surface, or compression mounted to a rigid or flexible printed circuit board, allowing excellent design flexibility and a very dense footprint. In addition to the external accessory interconnection, spring probe connectors are often the target surface which connects to the internal PCB. This simplifies radio assembly and reduces radio components.
IDI connectors are often used for power delivery in LMRs. This allows for a highly reliable interconnect between the battery and radio, resistant to shock and vibration and able to deliver over ten amps without significant temperature rise. Probe based connectors are often used for charging and cradling applications, with mixed-signal connectors capable of handling high power, RF signal for the antenna, and digital signal for communications.
The high density and short length of spring probe based connectors makes them ideal for in-helmet and headset interconnect. Probes can be housed in a bayonet connector for a wiping interface and extreme density, or in a magnetic latch for break-safe connections.
