C.V./ Resume Writing

• Writing an effective resume is the first step towards landing your next job.• It is your ambassador to the work world.• Opens the door of opportunities.• It is the first thing an employer sees from you.• Creates the valuable first impression

Writing an Effective Resume

• An impressive resume is a direct ticket to your job

• Remember, your resume speaks about you, when and where you are not present.• As the competition increases, you need to make a favourable ’first impression’ through your resume.• Your resume is a snapshot which should clearly support your carrier goals.

What information should be in Your Resume ?

• Your resume should identify yourself• It should highlight details of your education.• Details of your work experience.• Details of your skills, which the employer is really looking for.• Special abilities - like, computer skills.

Vital Steps for an Effective C.V

• Find out what skills, knowledge and experience are needed to do the ‘target Job’.• Make a list of your 3 or 4 of your strong skills, knowledge and abilities that make you a strong candidate for the job.• For each key skill think of your accomplishments, and mention them.

First Step: Choose a Job Target

Focus:• People who have the hardest time finding a job are often the ones who insist on writing a ‘Generic’ C.V. that lists every thing they ever did. • But remember, employers don’t have so much time.• They are looking for people who fit their requirement.

Step 2: Find out what skills and experience are needed

• Find that information from job ads, employer’s job description or from some one working in that field.• Find out exactly what skills the job requires.

Step-3: List your strongest skill.

• Example: Target Job: Call Centre Job• Relevant Skills: Excellent oral communication Computer skills Problem solving skills Persuasive Skills

Characteristics of a Successful C.V.

• Easy to read and understand.• Visually powerful.• Focuses on skills • Clearly defines your job-related experiences.• One page, or at the most 2 pages long.• Don’t over crowd your C.V.

Successful Resume /C.V. Writing

• Language should be grammatically correct• Correct spelling.• Neat and clean, and professional looking• Formal style• Margins at sides and bottom.• Experiment with fonts & styles: bold, italic, and underlines, etc• No more than 2 or 3 different sizes.

A few simple tips

• 1. Keep it simple:• Remember, the employer has to shuffle through a few hundred resumes. He has very little time to spend on so many boring resumes.• So, to catch the attention you have to frame your resume by keeping it crisp, concise and to the point. It will do the trick. •

A few tips

• Mention relevant facts:• What matters at this point is only your immediate past experience.• Make sure that you only mention things that highlight activities that will project

you as a stronger candidate for that particular job.

A few tips

• Update your C.V regularly:• Make sure you update every single development that has happened since you drafted your first resume.• A new skill developed, a course undertaken, or some social/ professional job you participated, should feature on your C.V.

A few tips

• Keep your contact address always updated:• Change your resume if you move to a new address or change your phone/ mobile number or e-mail address.

A few tips

• Attach a covering letter:• A covering letter is a must. It is like biscuits with tea.• While a resume does all the talking, attached cover letter focuses on your suitability for that particular job.• A cover letter should be more ’tailor made’ for a particular job.
