How To Distinguish Original And Compatible Ink Cartridges?

An ‘original cartridge’ is one that’s made by the same company that made and sold you your printer. In comparison, a ‘compatible cartridge’ is one that’s been manufactured by a third party company for use in your printer.

In your search for new ink cartridges for your printer, you might also come across ‘refilled’ and ‘remanufactured’ ink cartridges. The first of these are original cartridges that have been used, returned, cleaned and refilled; this is common practice as cartridges can be reused up to six times!

A remanufactured ink cartridge is an original ink cartridge that has been used, returned, cleaned, all working parts replaced and then finally refilled again. This remanufacture is usually performed for toner cartridges because those are the ones that experience the most wear during the printer process.

So in fact, as you might have figured out by now, the biggest difference between original and compatible printer cartridges is the price. The simple truth is that companies that develop printers have a lot of overheads because of the extensive research and development involved in the manufacture of their products. Charging a lot for the ongoing costs of those printers once a customer has ‘bought into’ them is one way they can make a better profit. In comparison, a company that simply makes compatible cartridges has no such overheads, and can therefore afford to charge much less.
