AHT  407    History  of  Prince

High  school  yearbook  picture  of  Prince,  1974

•  Prince  Rogers  Nelson            was  born  in  1958,              in  Minneapolis    •  That’s  right:

His  name  is  actually  Prince.

Prince,  released  1979

•  His  second  album,  Prince  went  PlaInum.

•  Prince  was  18  when  he  recorded  it.

Dirty  Mind,  1980  and  Controversy,  1981

1999,  1982  I  had  to  listen  to  the  song  “1999”  at  least  15  Imes  at    a  Y2K  New  Year’s  party.  It  got  a  liPle  weird  aQer  a  while.

Prince  and  the  RevoluIon,  Purple  Rain,  1984  •  Prince's  1984  album

Purple  Rain  sold  more  than  20  million  worldwide.  and  spent  twenty-‐four  consecuIve  weeks  at  No.1  on  the  US  Billboard  200  chart.

•  The  song    “LiPle  Nicky”  provoked  those  Explicit  Lyrics  labels.

Prince,  Lovesexy,  1988

•  I’ll  admit  –  I  have  no  idea  what  to  make    of  this  album  cover,  either.

Prince    "Nude  Tour"  1990    Only  Elvis  and  David  Bowie  can  compete  with  Prince’s  wild  ou_its.

•  In  1993,  Prince  changed  his  stage  name  to  an  unpronounceable  symbol.

•  In  order  to  use  the  symbol  in  print  media,  Warner  Bros.  had  to  provide  floppy  disks  with  a  custom  font.

•  Because  this  symbol  is  not  pronounceable,  he  was  oQen  referred  to  as  "The  ArIst  Formerly  Known  as  Prince”

•  In  2000,  Prince  began  calling  himself  “Prince”  again.

In  2004,  Prince  opened  the  Grammy  awards  with  Beyonce.  He  was  inducted  into  the  Rock  and  Roll  Hall  of  Fame  the  same  year.

Prince  has  released  11  albums  in  the  past  ten  years
