SuperintendentofLearningDaveGoldenprovidedanoverviewofIndigenousEducationinitiativestakingplacethisschoolyearinTLDSB.HeintroducedIndigenousEducationConsultantHollyGroome,andMuskokaFallsPublicSchoolteacherReneeNawrockitosharea“WampumJourney.”Grade4/5studentsinNawrocki’sclassroomwereaskedtocreateavisualclassroomcontractthatdescribedacommitmenttobegoodpeopleintheirschoolandinthecommunity. Teachingandlearningtakeplaceaspartofthedevelopmentofacontract,planningawampumgeometricpattern,andtheactualcreationofthewampum.Studentslearntounderstand

howawampumwasusedasaneumonicdevicebyIndigenouspeoples.

Trusteessawwritingandaudiosamplesofstudentstoriessharingthesymbolsandcoloursthattheychose,aswellastheemotionsstudentsweretryingtoevokeintheirindividualwampumcreations.Theprojecthasbeenextremelysuccessfulandthereareplansforrepetitioninclassroomsacrossthedistrict.
