Bullying

Session 1

1

Watch the film clip. What’s happening?

• http://vimeo.com/50225011 or http://youtu.be/2o87Cq2tmGc

2

What was your reaction to the clip?

What is bullying?

• Work with a partner to decide on a clear definition of what bullying is…

• You have just four minutes!

3

Different Types of Bullying

• Work with a new partner

• List all the different types of bullying that you can think of

• You have another 4 minutes

4

Reasons for Bullying• Move on to your next

partner

• Try to list as many reasons as you can to explain why someone would bully another person

• Guess what? 4 minutes!

5

Are some types of bullying more or less serious than others?

• Find another person that you have not yet worked with and discuss your views

• 5 minutes for this one!

6

Who are the targets of bullying and who are the perpetrators?

• Reflect on this question as the clip is playing: http://youtu.be/rMAu09MZa3s

7

Perpetrators and Targets

• Work in small groups• Draw a ‘gingerbread’ person

on a piece of paper and draw a line down the middle

• Label one side ‘perpetrator’ and the other ‘target’

• Record the group’s ideas about who the perpetrators and targets of bullying might be

8

And what about bystanders?

• Add anyone who could be a bystander to the outside of the drawing

9

Walk and Talk

• Stick your poster on the wall and compare your ideas with those of others.

• Did all the different groups agree?

• Have any important things been left out?

• Are all the words recorded negative, or can any be seen in a positive way?

10

Reflection• It’s impossible to stereotype

bullies or victims – they can be boys or girls of all ages, from all backgrounds etc

• We are all capable of bullying behaviour

• Read the Fiona Phillips article, where she describes how she became a bully herself after being tormented by bullies over a long period of time

11

Personal Reflection• Work through the

questionnaire ‘Are you a bully?’ and reflect honestly on your responses

• This is a private activity, not to be shared with others

12

One thing I can do…

Finish with a class reflection:

‘One thing I can do to stop bullying is….’
