HB5 & The Possibilities It Will Provide to Districts Like Sweeny ISD

Best piece of education legislation passed (possibly ever).

• Industry• Parents (TAMSA)• Educators

Discussions started prior to legislative session with our Brazoria County Superintendents throughout Region4.

Allows students to become career ready, as well as college ready.

In our area, there is a definite need for a skilled workforce.

Realization that students could make a good living working in the industrial plants in our area and throughout the state.

Expansions at our local plants, as well as legislation, provided the opportunity to create a partnership between Sweeny ISD, Phillips 66, Chevron Phillips, & Brazosport College.

• As part of our 313 Agreement – Created the Phillips 66/Chevron Phillips Petrochemical Academy.

Continued• Worked with Brazosport College to do a facilities

needs assessment (equipment & supplies) . • Developing Programs in:– Process Technology– Instrumentation– Millwright– Pipefitter– Welding

• Students work toward an associates degree or certification.

Benefit of offering these classes during the school day:– Reduce or eliminate travel time to the college– Allow students involved in extracurricular activities to

participate– Through scholarships being offered to our students, those

who thought it was impossible to go to college now have a chance

Goal: To produce the companies next workforce The Academy will be open to all students in our area.

I believe it is a win-win for students of our district and the two companies, Phillips 66 and

Chevron Phillips who are supporting the Petrochemical Academy!
