EXHORATIONBEFOREMARRIAGE

MyBrotherandSister:Youhavebegunpreparingtoenteruponaunion,whichismostsacredandmostserious.ItismostsacredbecauseitwasestablishedbyGodHimself.Byit,hegavetomanashareinthegreatestworkofcreation,theworkofcontinuationofthehumanrace.Andinthisway,hesanctifiedhumanloveandenabledmanandwomantohelpeachotherliveaschildrenofGod,bysharingacommonlifeunderhisfatherlycare.

BecauseGodhimselfisthusitsauthor,marriageisofitsverynatureaholyinstitution,requiringofthosewhoenterintoitacompleteandunreservedgivingofself.ButChristourLordaddedtotheholinessofmarriageanevendeepermeaningandahigherbeauty.HereferredtotheloveofmarriagetodescribehisownloveforHisChurch,thatis,forthepeopleofGodwhomheredeemedbyhisownblood.Andso,hegavetoChristiansanewvisionofwhatmarriedlifeoughttobe,alifeofself-sacrificinglovelikehisown.ItisforthisreasonthatHisapostle,St.Paul,clearlystatesthatmarriageisnowandforalltimetobeconsideredagreatmystery,intimatelyboundupwiththesupernaturalunionofChristandtheChurch,whichunionisalsotobeitspattern.

Thisunion, then, ismost serious, because itwill bind you together for life in a relationship so closeand sointimate,thatitwillprofoundlyinfluenceyourwholefuture.Thatfuture,withitshopesanddisappointments,itssuccessesanditsfailures,itspleasuresanditspains,itsjoysanditssorrows,ishiddenfromyoureyes.Youknowthattheseelementsaremingledineverylifeandaretobeexpectedinyourown.Andsonotknowingwhatisbeforeyou,youtakeeachotherforbetterorforworse,forricherorforpoorer,insicknessandinhealth,untildeath.

Trulythen,thesewordsaremostserious.Itisabeautifultributetoyourundoubtedfaithineachother,thatrecognizingtheirfullimport,youare,nevertheless,sowillingandreadytopronouncethem.Andbecausethesewordsinvolvesuchsolemnobligations,itismostfittingthatyourestthesecurityofourweddedlifeuponthegreatprincipleofself-sacrifice.Andso,youbeginyourmarriedlifebythevoluntaryandcompletesurrenderofyourindividuallivesintheinterestofthatdeeperandwiderlifewhichyouaretohaveincommon.Henceforthyouwillbelongentirelytoeachother;youwillbeoneinmind,oneinheartandoneinaffections.Andwhateversacrificesyoumayhereafterberequiredtomaketopreservethismutuallife,alwaysmakethemgenerously.Sacrificeisusuallydifficultandirksome.Onlylovecanmakeiteasy,andperfectlovecanmakeitajoy.Wearewillingtogiveinproportionaswelove.Andwhenloveisperfect,thesacrificeiscomplete.GodsolovedthewordthathegavehisonlybegottenSon,andtheSonsolovedusthatHegaveHimselfforoursalvation.“Greaterlovethanthisnomanhath,thatamanlaydownhislifeforhisfriends.”

Nogreaterblessingcancometoyourmarriedlifethanpureconjugallove,loyalandtruetotheend.May,then,thislovewithwhichyoujoinyourhandsandheartstodayneverfail,butgrowdeeperandstrongerastheyearsgoon.Andiftrueloveandtheunselfishspiritofperfectsacrificeguideyoureveryaction,youcanexpectthegreatestmeasureofearthlyhappinessthatmaybeallottedtomaninthisvaleoftears.TherestisinthehandsofGod.

Planning for your marriage ceremony involves numerous details. These guidelines are designed to expedite thesacramental, musical and practical areas of your marriage ceremony for you, for the priest or deacon, and for themusicianswhowillbeinvolved.Pleasereviewcarefullyfortimesensitiveinformationalpurposes.

SCHEDULING

CouplesshouldcontactthePastoratleastsix(6)months(oneyearisideal)inadvanceofanyanticipateddateforthewedding.ThechurchweddingdatecanonlybesetuponmeetingwiththePastorandpayingthedepositfee.

TheDirectorofMusicandOrganistatSt.JohnNepomuceneandSt.FrancesX.Cabrinioverseesallinstrumentalandvocalmusicformarriagecelebrations.ArrangementsforaconsultationwiththeDirectorofMusicshouldbemadeaftertheinitialmeetingwiththePastorandatleasttwo(2)monthspriortothescheduledweddingdate.TheDirectorofMusicoftheparishwillapproveorappointmusiciansandmusicselectionsfortheweddingceremonywhileretaininga‘benchfee’orpaymentforservices.

PRE-CANA–SPIRITUAL,MORAL&PRACTICALPREPARATION

AllcouplesmarringintheCatholicChurcharerequiredtotakeamarriagepreparationprogram,oftenreferredtoasPre-Cana. Pre-Cana is offered in two formats: small group and private. The small group classes are held in midtownManhattan,northofthecity,oronlineviainternetvideochat.Allcouples,regardlessofwhichformattheyoptfor,musttaketheFOCCUScouplecommunicationtestandaclassinfertilitycare.

TheFOCCUStestisanexcellenttoolforhelpingcouplesmakesuretheyhavecommunicatedonalltheimportantissuesaffectingtheirrelationship. Couplestakethistestontheirowntime,andthenmeetwithafacilitatortodiscusstheirresults.Thetestcanbetakenonlineormailedtocouples.

IntheFertilityCareclass,womenaretaughthowtoobservetheirfertilitysigns.Thisgiveswomentheabilitytoidentifywhentheyarefertileand,importantly,tomonitortheirhealth.Severalclassesinfertilitycareareofferedeverymonth.It’simportantthatmenalsoattendthisclass.KnowledgeofFertilityCarehasbeenshowntofacilitategreaterintimacybetweenhusbandandwife.

AllpaperworkmustbesubmittedbyhanddirectlytothePastor.Photocopiesarenotacceptable.

ThepersonresponsibleforthecompilingofmarriagepapersisthepriestoftheparishwheretheCatholicpartyorbothofthepartiesareinresident.Ifthemarriageistotakeplaceoutsidethatparish,theparishpriestwillsendthecompletedpaperstothediocesanchanceryforapprovalbeforeforwardingthefiletotheDioceseorChurchwherethemarriageistotakeplace.

PROOFOFBAPTISM–AllCatholicpartiesarerequiredtoobtainabaptismcertificatefromthechurchwheretheywerebaptized.Thismustbedatedwithinsixmonthsofthedateoftheproposedwedding. Thiscertificatewillgiveevidenceofbaptism,butiffullyannotatedwillalsogivedetailsofConfirmationandofanynotesregardingmarriagewithintheCatholicChurch.WhenyoucontactthechurchwhereyourBaptismtookplace,giveyourfullname,dateofbirthanddateofbaptism.Ifyoucannotconfirmtheexactdateofbaptism,pleaseindicatethedateascloselyaspossible.Theremaybeasmallprocessingfee.

BaptizedNon-Catholics–Newlyissued(copyisacceptable)certificateindicatingthatyouhavebeenbaptized“IntheNameoftheFatherandtheSonandoftheHolySpirit”

DISPENSATIONS–Ifoneofthepartiesisanon-Catholicoranon-Baptizedperson,arequestmustbemadetotheArchbishoptodispensethelawthatrequiresaCatholictomarryaCatholic.TheCatholicpartywillreaffirmtheirfaithinGodandHisHolyChurchandpromisetodoeverythingintheirpowertoraiseanychildrenintheCatholicfaithbyhavingthembaptizedandteachingthemtopracticethefaithinwordanddeed.

CIVILLICENSE–AMarriageCANNOTbewitnessedwithoutaCivilLicense.Itisyourresponsibilitytoobtainthelicense.BringtheLicenseandreturnenvelopetotheChurchrehearsalandgiveittothePriestorcoordinatorBEFOREtherehearsalbegins.OncetheWeddinghastakenplaceitwillbemailedfromtheRectory.

DESTINATIONWEDDINGS–Fornon-parishionerswhowishtobemarriedinourParish,aLetterofPermissionfromthePastorofyourhomeparishgivingpermissionforyourWeddingtobewitnessedatSt.JohnNepomuceneorSt.FrancesX.CabriniisrequiredstatingthatallpreparationsfortheSacramentwillbecompletedbyhim.Ifyourpreparationsarebeingcompletedhere,yourPastorneedsonlytosendaletterindicatingthatpermissionisgrantedfortheWeddingtotakeplaceatSt.JohnNepomuceneorSt.FrancesX.Cabrini.Untilthisletterisreceived,yourdatecannotbeconfirmed.

THEMARRIAGECEREMONY

TheMarriage Ceremony in the Roman Catholic Church celebrates the Christian faith of the couple that isnourishedbytheWordofGodproclaimedintheScripturesand,fortwoCatholics,theBodyandBloodofChristsharedintheEucharist.ItcelebratesGod’sgraceatworkinthelifeofthecoupleunitingthemintheself-givinglove that Christ has called us all to have for one another. For this reason, the music, the clothing, thedecorations, and any activities that have come to be part of the ChurchWedding Ceremony are to drawattentiontoandhighlightthespiritualdimensionsoftheceremony,neverovershadowordistractfromit.

Goodtasteandmoderationarekeyprinciples.

TheChurchallowscertainculturaladaptationswithin theceremonyas longas theyare inkeepingwiththenatureandspiritof the liturgy. Suchadaptationsshouldnotbeoverpowering. Becarefulnot toduplicatesymbols thatmight have similarmeanings: for example, the lasso and the unity candle are both culturaladaptationsthatemphasizetheunionoftwopersonsintoanewlifeinChrist.

Anyonewhohasaliturgicalrole(i.e.,lectororreader)intheweddingisexpectedtohaveasenseofreverenceforthatroleandreasonablecompetenceinfulfillingit,andmustbeapracticingCatholic,apracticingChristianoramemberoftheJewishfaith.

Photographs at awedding ceremony are very important. All effortswill bemade by the parish priests toaccommodatethephotographers’needswithinthelimitationsofwhatissacredandholy.AllphotographersandvideographersmustfollowthesetupguidelinesoftheParish.Absolutelynopicturescanbetakenfrombehindorwithinthesanctuary.

Thephotographer/videographermustmeetwiththepriestbeforetheceremony.Thechoirloftandcenteraisleareaccessibleduringpartsoftheliturgy.Bodymicrophonesareallowedforaudio/videopurposes.

IfMass iscelebratedadisclosureprovidedby theParishmustbe included in theweddingprogrambookletexplainingwhommayreceivetheHolyEucharistandunderwhatcircumstance.

VISTINGPRIEST,DEACONSORCLERGYOFOTHERDENOMINATIONS

Visitingpriestsandecumenicalclergyarewelcometotakepartintheweddingceremony.IfapriestordeaconotherthantheoneassignedtoSt.JohnandSt.Franceswouldliketopresideattheweddingceremony,thisneedstobeapprovedbythePastor.PriestsordeaconsfromoutsidetheArchdioceseofNewYorkmustprovidealetterofgoodstanding(knownascelebrant)tothePastor.MinistersofotherfaithsmustcontactthePastortodiscusstheirpossibleroleintheceremony.

MUSICFORTHECHURCH

Inplanningmusicforthechurchcelebration,pleasekeepinmindthattheliturgicalcelebrationisareligiousandsacredevent.Anymusicthatmaybeheardinthecontextofsacredliturgythroughoutthechurchyearaswellas Sunday Mass would typically be appropriate. While this places restriction on some music, there arenumerouspossibilitiesforappropriatemusic–seesuggestionsonpage11.Whatmaynotbeappropriateforthechurchceremonyismanytimesquitesuitableattheweddingreception.

St.John/St.FrancesChurchprovidesitsownprofessionalOrganistandastaffCantorforallweddingceremoniesthatadheretotheplanningguidelines.Aguestvocalist,throughauditionandwithnecessarycredentials,maysinganappropriateaccompaniedsoloduringtheceremonyorMassbyapprovaloftheDirectorofMusic.GuestinstrumentalistsarewelcometoperformlivemusicduringthePrelude(whiletheguestsarearriving),duringtheOffertory,afterCommunion,and/orduringtheRecessionaluponapprovaloftheDirectorofMusic.Theparishchoiroraprofessionalvocalensemblemayberequested(twomonthsinadvance)fortheweddingatanadditionalfeemutuallyagreeduponwiththeDirectorofMusicwhichwillsupportthevolunteermusicministry.

Under no circumstances are electric guitars, electronic keyboards or any pre-recordedmusic permitted inreligiousandsacredeventsatSt.John/St.Frances.Theorganistheonlyliturgicalkeyboardinstrumentthatmaybeusedduringtheweddingliturgy.

1. Themainaisleis66feetlong,fromthefootofthestepattheSanctuaryinthefronttothemainchurchdoorsintheback.Thereare16pewsoneithersideofthemainaisle.

2. Noconfetti,rice,birdseed,flowerpetals,etc.,maybethrownonchurchproperty.3. Theuseofawhiterunnerisprohibited.4. The responsibility fordisposingof theboxes inwhich the flowers come,aswell asall plastic

wrappers,pewbows,etc.,isthatofthefloristorthepersoninchargeofflowers.Pleaseconveythisinstruction.

Theofferingofthemarriageceremonyfornon-parishionersis$1200.Thereducedofferingforthemarriageceremonyis$750forregisteredparishionersortheCzech/Slovakcommunity.Thesefeesincludetheofferingstothechurch,thepriest,thesacristan,server,weddingcoordinator(rehearsalandceremony),theorganistandthecantor.PleaseremitpaymenttotheParishManagerattheparish.Cashandcheckareacceptableformsofpayment.PleasemakecheckspayabletoSt.JohnNepomucene.

Anon-refundabledepositof$150isdueuponreservingyourweddingdate.

Ifyouwishtoinviteanadditionalvocalistorinstrumentalists(stringquartet,harpist,trumpeter,etc.),themusictheywillperformmustbeapprovedbytheDirectorofMusicaheadoftime.Anyadditionalagreed-uponfeeswouldbepaidbyyoudirectlytothoseadditionalmusiciansincludingtheDirectorofMusicforcontracting.IfanyofthemweretobeaccompaniedbyourOrganist,therewouldbeanadditional$50feepayabledirectlytotheOrganistforamandatoryhalf-hourrehearsalatorbeforethetimeofservice.
