Georgina ballers being phased out for summer
Georgina’s gym was alive with action Thursday night as 24 guys 19 to 33 got together for two hours to shoot
hoops, exercise and share some laughs.
The event was scheduled as part of June is Recreation Month in Georgina, but the action on the court was filled
with more frustration than usual - and it wasn’t because of poor shooting and dribbling.
Georgina’s basketball lovers are now being told they’ll only be able to meet at the gym once a week for one hour,
instead of the two two-hour sessions every week to which they’ve become accustomed.
No one is happy about the change.
“We all find it ridiculous that the town decided to knock the court time down to an hour a week,” said David Moore,
33, a Keswick resident who teaches Grade 8 at W.J. Watson Public School.
“The Georgina gym should be used much more than it is because there’s not much for people to do up here.
Everyone here really benefits from playing recreational basketball.”
Each of the basketball enthusiasts in attendance weren’t positive they’d still come out to the Georgina Gym events
once the new schedule takes effect.
“This is really unfair,” added 25-year-old former Keswick resident Sean Taylor.
“Everyone here has full-time jobs and pays taxes and we should be able to come here when we want. Playing
basketball is a great way to stay in shape and it’s a lot of fun. We have sort of a brotherhood here and they’re
taking it away from us. There’s no justice in this and it’s a travesty.”
Georgina’s leisure services programmer agrees recreation lovers should be able to use the gym as frequently as
they’d like to, but said the town is cutting down on hours because it generally slow down during the summer.
“When the town offered the basketball programs at the gym last summer, we were barely able to get 12 people to
show up on a regular basis,” said Robin McDougall.
Turnout dwindled in both age groups, the 16-plus and the 20-plus, so the town had to cut it down to one hour once
a week.
The reduced schedule will only be for the summer and things will return to normal in the fall, she said.
