Integrated Science C

Generators

II. Magnetism can create electricity– A moving conductor (wire) in a

magnetic field generates electrical current in the conductor• Or wire is still and magnet is

moving• Movement is critical!

Generators

III. Magnetism can create electricity• Called electromagnetic induction– Electrical current is “induced”

• Used in generators– Transfers mechanical energy into electrical

energy• Uses:

– Gas powered generators » Gas engine turns rotor

– Power plants» Coal, natural gas, or garbage burned → steam

– Wind turbine or hydroelectric dam» Turbines power generators

Generators

Generators are similar to motors◦Converts mechanical energy into electrical

energy◦The loop of wire inside turns within a magnetic

field and thus produces a current◦For each half rotation of the loop, the current

produced by the generator reverses direction• Produces AC (alternating current)

Generators

1. Can be AC (alternating current)◦ Power plants

2. Can be DC (direct current)◦ Hand generator

Draw a series and parallel circuit. What is the advantage of a

parallel circuit?

Electricity Review

What is the relationship between current, voltage,

and resistance?

How does a light bulb work?

Whiteboard Electricity Review1. How do electromagnets work?

2. Give an example of an

electromagnet in your house

Whiteboard Electricity Review

1. Identify a source of electricity and the energy transfer associated with it.

2. Identify a transfer from electricity to something else seen in the classroom.

Whiteboard Electricity Review

1. Why do light bulbs give off light?

2. Why do light bulbs give off heat?
