Library Resources and Copyright

Copyright is the exclusive set of rights of a work’s creator or publisher to:

• Reproduce the work

• Create derivative works

• Distribute copies of the work

• Perform the work in public

• Display the work in public physically or otherwise (television, radio, internet)

From USG Copyright Policy, Introduction to the Fair Use Checklist:

You do not need to conduct a fair use analysis if you or your institution has a license (or permission) to use the work and your use falls within that license. For example, some materials are distributed with a license that specifically allows for nonprofit educational use. The work may also be available through an electronic database at your institution’s library or legally available on the web. If so, you may be able to direct students to that work or link directly to that work without conducting a fair use analysis.

Linking is not Copying

Linking to a work hosted elsewhere is not the same as making a copy, and it is not copyright infringement.

You and your students have access to GALILEO and your library’s electronic resources through subscriptions, and students can authenticate from off-campus to access these resources.

Find the Permalink

Permalinks are links with off-campus authentication built-in for your institution. The link is designed to point to the same resource, regardless of who opens it.

Often, if you do not use a Permalink and copy an address in a library database, that link is session-based and will return an error for anyone else.

Have a Citation with the LinkLinks can have issues as both your resources and the linked resources change over time. Be sure to have a citation of the work along with the link:

When using library resources, link to the resource instead of making a copy.

When linking, use the permalink whenever available.

Reimagining the Textbook:Creating and Using New E- and Open Formats

Registration is now open

February 19, Middle Georgia State University

Creating and Using New E- and Open Formats is a one day workshop designed to support affordable textbook publishing and adoption efforts, particularly for use in replacing traditional commercial textbooks with Open Educational Resources (OERs). Topics include commercial and open eTextbookplatforms and tools and strategies to support campus and faculty adoption, authoring, and publishing of eTextbooks.

The program includes national and USG speakers, including Affordable Learning Georgia grantees who have published their own open eTextbooks.

A light breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack will be provided.

There is no cost to register and attend; however, cancellations of less than 48 hours and no-shows may result in a $35.00 charge to the registrant.
