NAPLAN Testing ndash Years 3 5 amp 7 Next week our Year 3 and 5 students will participate in the 2015 NAPLAN testing The results of these tests will not be available until late in term 3 with individual student reports also being issued to schools at this time NAPLAN results provide a lsquosnapshotrsquo of student achievement at a particular point in time and will be used in conjunction with multiple sources of data that are currently used at our school This data is used to create a complete picture of classroom instructional needs to accommodate student learning At St Josephrsquos our teachers from Prep ndash Year 6 are involved in regular processes of collecting and analyzing data to inform the lsquonext stepsrsquo in teaching and learning that allow for the personalization and differentiation of programs to meet the unique needs of each student Over the past several years whole school data for reading and spelling have been collected and developed into data displays that reflect each individual studentrsquos progress within and across their grade levels Analysis of this data provides a lens through which individual student progress is monitored and incorporated into teaching and learning programs This data ensures that at the commencement of each school year key information related to each childrsquos individual learning journey is available Importantly our school regularly and openly collects and reviews this data as a means of monitoring and improving student learning outcomes and to guide the professional learning needs of our school The National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests must be undertaken by all students enrolled in government and non-government schools in Years 3 5 7 and 9 across Australia This year our Year 3 and 5 students will sit the NAPLAN tests during Week 4 on the dates listed below
Tuesday 12 May 2015 Language Conventions and Writing Wednesday 13 May 2015 Reading Thursday 14 May 2015 Numeracy Some important points to remember
NAPLAN tests are undertaken by students as a normal part of their learning program Teachers have ensured
students are prepared for the tests and have provided appropriate support and guidance
NAPLAN tests are a snapshot of your childrsquos learning via a formal written test format Please ensure that you consider their results (when they arrive around Term 3) in conjunction with your childrsquos school based reporting and in consultation with your childrsquos teacher And finally
Parents and carers can best assist students by making them feel comfortable about the nature and purpose of the tests Assure your child that the NAPLAN tests give them another opportunity to show what they know and can do
The tests must be administered under strict test conditions on the dates specified and will commence immediately after assembly on each testing day Therefore it is important that the children arrive at school promptly at 0835 am Further information can be accessed at wwwnaplaneduau Please do not hesitate to contact me at school should you have any queries or concerns regarding the tests
