Fast Fact:
Over 14,000 pounds of
produce were donated
during September and
October of 2009.
Its Monday morning and the phonesare ringing steadily. A group of great
volunteers are answering those calls foremergency food checking eligibilityand directing individuals and familiesto one of the 27 Kalamazoo Loaves &Fishes Grocery Pantry sites.
Out in the warehouse, the truck hasbeen loaded and is on its way to deliverthe cases of food needed to stock the
shelves of six pantry partners. Thesystem hums. What has been a foodcrisis for an individual family is turningitself into an example of communitycare. Its just another day at KalamazooLoaves & Fishes.
The ingredients are simple. Youtake donations of food, add hundredsof volunteer hours, supplement themix with contributions from caringpeople across the community, and you
have an emergency food assistance
system. Every day we balance these keyingredients. Some days we need moredonated food, some days its getting theright volunteers in the right place. Everyday its a stewardship of communitydonations. Thats what we do. And heres why. We do this wor
because there are people across thiscommunity who need our assistance
We do this work because both peopl
we dont know and people we knowhave found that their resources havenot stretched far enough to have foodfor their family today. We do this workbecause for almost everyone, its hard toask and harder still to do without. As this years Annual Campaign letters
hit mailboxes across the community, weknow that the challenges of the curreneconomic crisis are still very real. And
we know that this simple service is vita
to the recovery. Anne Wend Lipsey, Executive DirectorRemember:

SAVING TREES BENEFITS KLFBryan and Kathy Staufer have been selling Scotch pine trees for the holidays since the mid 1980s. As their children left home to m
their own way in the world, selling trees became less central to their own lives and they stopped selling them a few years back. Thetrees didnt stop growing, however, and Bryan and Kathy were left with beautiful, viable trees that were basically going to was
So three years ago, they came up with an idea. The long-time KLF supporters gave away their lifes work for free. They couldnt sell the trees without a commercial license, so instead their farm became a cut-your-own establishment. For those who still wanted to contribute a few dollars in exchange for the Staufersgenerosity, they were asked to donate to Kalamazoo Loaves & Fishes.
This was a unique way that we could have the trees used and still have it be a contribution to Loaves& Fishes, said Bryan.
If youre looking for a tree this holiday season, call the Staufers at 375-8080, or stop by their treefarm at 5620 Texas Drive any day except Sunday.
