Finding  “Just  Right”  Books  

Choosing  “Just  Right”  books:    Helping  your  reader  choose  a  “just  right”  book  means  finding  a  book  that  is  not  too  hard  or  too  easy,  but  just  right.    The  reader  should  be  able  to  read  the  book  smoothly  and  only  have  a  few  places  where  he  or  she  has  to  slow  down  to  figure  out  a  word  or  understand  meaning.    You  can  show  your  reader  how  to  choose  a  “just  right”  book  by  using  the  Five-­‐Finger  Test  or  using  the  guidelines  below.          

Easy  Books:    • The  reader  is  able  to  read  smoothly  and  

with  an  interesting  voice.      • Easy  reading  books  usually  have  very  few  

words  on  each  page.    • The  reader  should  be  familiar  with  most  

words  in  the  book  and  know  how  to  say  them.  

“Just  Right”  Books:  • The  reader  understands  what  is  being  

read  and  is  enjoying  the  book.  • The  book  is  read  with  some  smoothness,  

but  there  might  be  some  choppy  places.  • The  reading  speed  is  just  right  –  not  too  

slow  or  too  fast.  • The  reader  can  figure  out  tricky  words  

and  understand  what  they  mean  in  the  text.    

Challenging  Books:    • These  books  can  be  identified  through  the  Five-­‐Finger  Test.  • If  the  reading  sounds  choppy,  it  is  most  likely  the  reading  is  too  difficult.  • The  reader  typically  does  not  enjoy  these  books  because  much  of  the  time  reading  is  spent  

understanding  the  text,  slowing  down  reading  speed.    The  student  is  unable  to  describe  the  book  or  follow  the  storyline,  and  as  a  result,  struggles  to  stay  motivated  to  read  the  book.
