DESCRIPTION

Job search today is fundamentally different than it was 10, 20 or 30 years ago. The rules have changed, but not all the players are aware of this - especially those in transition and older generations of workers. In this new presentation, Steve Murphy from Bamboo Interactive will show you a game plan for finding a job in the digital age, including using tools like LinkedIn, Twitter, Wordpress and others to help you secure your dream job.

The Job Search Has Changed

A lot has changed the past few years.

There are new rules being introduced to the game – but not everyone knows about them.

Fierce Competition

Accelerated Technology

New Standards

But Wait! Are Jobs Scarce?

According to Forbes, there are roughly

4 MILLIONunfilled jobs right now.

The problem is a disconnect.

The way companies are hiring isn’t matching the way applicants are applying.

≠Applicants Companies

A Big Opportunity (For Us)

Digital makes it easier for applicants to stand out in the crowded market place and meet the standards of hiring companies.

Let’s jump in!

Remember: You don’t have to swim faster than the shark…just faster than the next swimmer!

CREATING A RESUME THAT RESONATES

Part 1:

The Holy Grail of Job Search

A resume is a must-have for the job search.

Its your personal financial statement – if you expect a company to invest in you, show them what you’re worth!

Build a Master Resume

This document should be much longer than a resume you would apply with.

Use it as your “word bank” when building custom resumes.

A master resume template will save you a lot of time in the future.

Be Specific & Actionable

When building your resume, ask yourself the following:

What have you accomplished in the past?

Can you back it up with numbers? What potential do you have for the

future?

Make It Attractive

Format It for Software

Save two copies: One for people, one for software.

Creating a plain text version is more easily read by software like Taleo + iCims.

BUILDING YOUR ONLINE BRAND

Part 2:

Fact: You’re Being Googled

Not only in background checks, but by hiring managers.

Make sure what they find is all good!

LinkedIn Is a Must

Complete Your Profile

1. Headshot2. Descriptive tagline3. Robust summary4. Complete job history5. Keywords6. Recommendations!

Recommendations

Get them from friends, past customers, colleagues, bosses and even vendors.

Engage with Others

Sharing gets you noticed. Make it a point to share or engage 1-2 times a week.

Claim Your Name

Create a portal or personal website that’s all about you. This asset grows over time!

Include A Digital Resume

Always up to date – just give the link.

Make Contact Easy

But Steve, I can’t code…

That’s ok – there are plenty of web providers that allow you to make a website without knowing a lick of code.

Here’s a few of my favorites…

WordPress.com

About.me

BrandYourself.com

Don’t Forget to Google Yourself!

Type in your own name. What else shows up? Be prepared to answer any questions an interviewer might throw at you.

WHERE TO FIND JOBS ONLINE

Part 3:

Let’s be clear about something…

I HATE MONSTER AND

CAREERBUILDER(so I won’t talk about them today.)

LinkedIn Wins Again

93% of recruiters use LinkedIn. So you need to use it too!

Do More with Your Application

Twitter is Hidden Gold

• Real Time• Real People• Easy to Respond• Not as competitive

Send Your Website!

Target Jobs on Company Sites

Apply To Companies You Love

Not every company posts their jobs online.

Just because a job isn’t listed, doesn’t mean they aren’t hiring!

Keep in mind…

Remember that it is often a numbers game.

Set goals for yourself daily and weekly.

Test + improve your resume, profiles, etc. regularly.

Never, ever give up! You will land.
