Principal’s Corner

Second semester has started!

High school students looking to make course changes must

see their assigned counselor prior to making those deci-sions. I was very impressed

with the overall attitude and hard work of the students in semester one. Keep up the

good work. Report cards were handed out

to students on February 2nd. Just a reminder that parents can continue to view student

attendance and marks on Par-ent Portal. If you have ques-

tions or issues with Parent Portal give Ms. Reeve a call at the school.

I want to thank Ms. Calyniuk and her VIBE team for all the

hard work they did in hosting

another exciting and enjoya-ble VIBE Day on January

30th. Over 400 junior high students from JR Robson, Mannville, St. Jerome’s, Clan-

donald and Grade 6 students from VES spent the day at our school attending a variety of

sessions. The sessions were led by community experts and

members from various com-munity organizations. Thank you to those who volunteered

to work with our future lead-ers and experts.

The next Parent Advisory Council meeting will be March

27, 2017 at 7 pm.

Our own Marauder and football

player, Kyle Theiss, has earned his place in the Football Alberta Top

100 U18 player list! This opens his door to playing on the U16 or U18 Football Alberta Provincial Team

and even play nationally and inter-nationally afterwards. “This is a big deal, hasn’t happened in a

‘looong’ time for Vermilion football players”, says our senior high So-

cial Studies teacher and coach, Lorne Maier, “he's worked really hard to get to this level training

several times a week with a profes-sional trainer in Lloyd and attend-

ing player camps on the weekends throughout the winter.”

February is an exciting month for VIBE! As sup-porters of the Pink Shirt Day campaign, we love wearing and seeing stu-dents and staff wear pink on February 22nd to raise

awareness of bullying issues. Our Pink Shirt design, created by J.R Robson student Han-nah Stewart, spreads a message that VIBE stands behind, one that encourages kindness towards everyone! The shirts and hoodies sold like hotcakes and you will be seeing

them worn all around local businesses and schools on February 22!

What is Pink Shirt Day? The Pink Shirt Day campaign started when a rural Nova Scotia boy wore a pink shirt to school. Sadly, he was harassed and bullied by a few class-mates; they called him homosexual for wear-ing pink. What could have turned into a trau-matic event for this student actually ended up positively. There were some witnesses that day who chose to be more than bystanders. Two grade 12 students, who witnessed this act of bullying, decided that they would take a stand to show the bullies that their actions were unacceptable. That night, the boys self-lessly bought 50 pink shirts from a local dis-count store and then went online to encour-age all their friends to wear a pink shirt to school the next day to make what they called a “Sea of Pink”. When the bullied student ar-rived the next day and saw the “Sea of Pink”, witnesses said it was like a weight lifted off his shoulders. The bullies were never heard from again. Check out pinkshirtday.ca for more information.

The VIBE student advisory is planning a school wide talent show in the month of Feb-ruary. Watch for posters and be sure to sign up to display your talent, no matter how grand or small!

Students are welcome to eat lunch in the VIBE room or come up and play games at lunch time, we have a huge assortment of games to suit everyone!

What’s the VIBE? Pink Shirt Day 2017

The Depot Youth Camp is a week-long summer camp for students in Grades 11 and 12 (ages 16-19).

Students selected for the RCMP Youth Camp form a co-ed group that is reflective of a typical RCMP cadet troop. By the end of the week-long camp, the group will develop a good understanding of the career possibilities offered by the RCMP. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience Depot prior to submitting an RCMP application.

This is also a wonderful opportunity to interact with police officers from many different units within the RCMP, which will allow you to obtain a better understanding of what life would be like as a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police!

ABOUT THE PROGRAMStudent selection will be based on academic achievement, fitness and interest in a career in policing. While at camp, students will be issued parts of the RCMP uniform to wear and will be expected to act as a troop in training. They will be required to wake up early, keep dorms clean, and behave as a professional representative of the RCMP.

Youth Cooking Club Tuesday March 7th - April 11th, 2017

Learn healthy meal and snack ideas. Develop cooking skills to prepare nutritious foods.

Opportunity to build confidence in cooking. A fun, interactive way to work as a team to learn to cook.

Parents are powerful role models!

The best way to teach children to be kind and to accept kindness is to intentionally model kindness.

Our children watch us carefully. They observe our relationships with others: how we listen to each other and how we treat each other. When our words and actions treat others with empathy and kindness; children learn and practice kindness.
