BROOK HOUSE HOPS
TWICB had the opportunity to visit our friends at Brook House Hops this week, to get an amazing insight into life on a Hop Farm, while the harvest is in full swing.
Brook House produce 15% of all of the hops grown in the UK, on two farms in the beautiful Herefordshire countryside.
Having witnessed the passion, precision, and attention to detail surrounding everything that goes into
the harvest, it is no surprise at all that Brook House are widely regarded by the UK Craft Brewing
Community as the place to go, when you want the very best quality hops.
12
-
Highlight of the day was undoubtedly visiting the Chinook field, which was still about two weeks away from being ready to pick but was throwing off the most amazing zesty lemon aroma you can possibly
imagine when rubbed! We can't wait to see which UK Brewers buy this particular crop, because we NEED
to taste the resulting beers!
We are very much looking forward to digging deeper into the Brook House Hops story in an upcoming
episode of our, So You Want to Build a Brewery? Podcast, but we will let them finish getting the harvest in first!

Branding & Marketing Beer in a Weird New WorldTip #4: Plan on pick-up for the long haul
Don’t mistake pick-up and delivery for temporary, situational phenomena. Brands like Starbucks are planning their real estate futures around pick-up-only locations— are you?

BREWER’S CORNER Miscellaneous Beery News
The superb Lily Waite has given Mills Brewing the full Sunday-
supplement treatment at Pellicle this week:
https://www.pelliclemag.com/home/2020/8/14/branches-at-
the-window-mills-brewing-in-berkeley-gloucestershire
I think that most UK Craft Beer fans know Mills more by
reputation, rather than by having sampled any of their beers.
Once people have read this enchanting article, it is only going to increase the demand for Mills' wild-
fermented beers even further!
Over at Imbibe this week, Kate Malczewski takes a sobering look at
what the end of the Furlough Scheme is going to mean for the
Hospitality Sector this Winter:
https://imbibe.com/news/what-will-the-end-of-the-furlough-scheme-mean-for-hospitality/
‘Someone's gotta pay for furlough in the long run. The hope was that the impact of the virus wouldn’t
last as long as it did, but it is what it is. We are dealing with it.’
At Beervana, the always thoughtful Jeff Alworth has an
interesting perspective from the USA on whether the Brewers' Association should be championing "Independence" or
"Smallness".

SAXON PACKAGING
Subscription & eCommerce Packaging –
A pillar for businesses throughout the COVID-19 pandemic
In the past few weeks, we have seen a
surge in demand for our array of
packaging solutions, particularly for the
subscription & eCommerce sectors. This
is because many businesses are seeking
alternative ways to enable customers to
continue to receive their products and
keep up with increased consumer
demand, says Adam Futter, Business
Development Manager at Saxon
Packaging.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It’s safe to say that the impact of the
Covid-19 pandemic on the craft beer
industry has been very well documented
over the last several weeks. With the
difficulties of social distancing, bar
closures and isolations, it has been a very
testing time for businesses all across the
nation (and for the beer aficionados such
as myself!).
The sheer drop in on premise sales, bar &
restaurant closures and reduced income
has created an incredibly difficult
situation for the brewing industry. Since
the 23rd March 2020, the UK lockdown
has forced brewers and pubs to throw
away over 70 million pints of beer which
would have spoilt during these
coronavirus closures [inews.co.uk].
Adapting for Covid-19
The 104 days of uncertainty that ensued
certainly disrupted the status quo in the
brewing industry. In order to cater for
newly embraced consumer purchasing
behaviours of ordering online (as
opposed to purchasing goods from brick
& mortar premises) many businesses had
to adapt by adjusting their operations
towards direct-to-consumer avenues.
Brewers have quite literally transformed
their businesses, by re-designing their
websites and overhauling their
marketing strategies to facilitate and
focus online sales transactions for their
beverages. - Providing a much-needed
solution for continuing the sales of beer.
The online sales orders have also offered
opportunities that lay within beer
subscription services, which have helped
to ensure repeat purchasing throughout
the pandemic. One of the key
components that have helped to
facilitate this is of course…packaging.
A Surge in Subscription Sign-ups
During the Covid-19 pandemic, ‘one in 10
Britons had signed up to a subscription
service’[Guardian]. It’s no surprise at all,
that in the past few months, we (Saxon
Packaging) have seen a surge in demand
for our array of beer packaging solutions,
particularly for the aforementioned
subscription & eCommerce sectors. This
is because brewers are continuing to
seek innovative and cost-effective ways
to enable customers to continue to
receive their hoppy beverages and not to
mention to keep up with increased
consumer demand.
I’m a firm believer of the old adage,
‘every dark cloud has a silver lining’. I
personally have witnessed many success
stories from brewers who have taken the
plunge into the world of eCommerce. One
particular client of ours has managed to
almost double their subscribers since the
beginning of the pandemic.
How to Recreate Their Successes
If you have yet to consider exploring the
avenue of direct-to-consumer retailing
for your beer products, it may come
across as daunting. However, it’s not as
difficult as it may first appear to be, in-
fact it is quite the contrary! Adapting
your existing website (or creating one
from scratch) for eCommerce is very
straightforward!
17
-
There are lots of tools & services
available online that make the entire
process painless. They are generally not
that costly and you can be up-and-
running, taking payments over the web,
in a very short space of time. From there,
it will be time for you to communicate
your new online services to your loyal
customers, and it won’t be long until
you’ll be shipping out your new orders
taken from the web.
This is where we come in, with over 30
years of packaging know-how we offer a
wide range of packaging solutions which
you can find out more about on our
website. There you will also find images
showcasing our beer product range along
with lots of useful information to guide
you. Of course, if you’d rather discuss
your requirement with me directly you
can call me on 01502 513112.
Food for Thought
When it comes to beer packaging, there
are many things to consider. Your
packaging needs to be reliable, cost
effective, aesthetically pleasing and
withstand the rigors of the varying
conditions of transport.
Here at Saxon Packaging, we really like to
make the entire process as smooth and
simple as possible. With over 30 years of
drinks packaging knowledge we know
what works and are able to create
standard packaging with simple designs
such as a company logo with an easy to
open tear strip through to intricate
pieces of artwork with multiple
perforations.
Moving Forward
As we continue to navigate through
these strange and difficult times and
heading fast towards Christmas, finding
a solution that permits you to continue
to deliver beer to your customers in this
new age of purchasing behaviour,
eCommerce is something that every
brewery should give some sincere
thought to. It goes without saying, that
investing a lot of time and effort into
producing your product(s), it’s essential
to be able to fulfil customer demand,
continue to deliver the hoppy bottles of
goodness and make it a memorable &
enjoyable experience for your customer.
If you have any questions or have a beer
packaging enquiry of your own, feel free
TAPROOM REVIEW We take a look at a popular taproom each week
Sip & Sip, 8 Peach Place, Wokingham, Berks RG40 1LY
Sit & Sip opened in Wokingham about 18 months ago, on a very pleasant pedestrian courtyard, close to Wokingham Town Centre.
They have 14 draft taps, which typically pour a selection from local breweries such as Siren Craft and Elusive, as
well as other UK and European favourites. (This week they had draft beers from Arbor, Brew York and Tiny Rebel, to name but three).
They also have three large, well-stocked fridges, so you are not going to struggle to find something interesting to drink here!
Currently they are focused mainly on table-service out to the very pleasant terrace, but there is also a reasonable
number of socially distanced tables inside.
In the unlikely event that there are non-craft beer drinkers in your party(!), Sit & Sip do stock a full-bar, and also
offer some light food choices. It is also worth noting that the courtyard is lined with cafes and restaurants, so you are not going to go hungry.
SMALL BREWER’S RELIEF PETITION
SMALL CRAFT BREWER’S NEED YOUR HELP!
Small Brewer’s Relief (SBR) was introduced in 2002 and was
designed to encourage growth in the UK brewing sector. It gives
a 50% discount on beer duty to breweries making under 5,000
hectolitres a year and offers tapered relief up to 60,000 hl.
In July, the government announced it would lower the 50%
threshold to 2,100 hl in 2022, increasing duty rates for at least
150 breweries. (2,100hl is roughly 1,000 pints a day).
This will severely impact many of small Independent Craft
Breweries who This Week in Craft Beer are dedicated in
supporting.
Please sign this petition and get your friends and family to do the
same!
WHO OWNS WHO…?
This Week in Craft Beer is dedicated to supporting and promoting Independent UK Craft Breweries and
the ecosystem surrounding them.
We define Independent as being those breweries who are not wholly or partly owned by a macro
brewery. A macro brewery is generally defined as a large, national or international brewery that produces and distributes more than 6 million barrels of beer per year.
Getting a new brewery off the ground is an expensive business, so most have external shareholders in
some shape or form, whether through friends and family, crowdfunding, or some other form of
investment. In our opinion, this does not compromise their independence, as long as the shareholder is
not a macro brewery.
Why does this matter?
Having a Macro as a parent company (even a minority shareholder), gives the brewery huge advantages of patronage, including access to cheaper or scarce ingredients, access to distribution networks, access
to points of sale including draft taps and pub fridges etc. For example, in 2017 ABInbev bought the
entire South African hop market for its own use and denied access to all independent breweries.
