Exploring the Rich History of Philadelphia

This year, as a Christmas gift to our grandchildren, our family gathered inPhiladelphia for an exploration of the city’s diverse and historic sites. TheLadd grandchildren—ages 18, 15, and 13—drove down from NewHampshire, while Everett and I drove up from Gettysburg.

We spent four glorious days in Philadelphia—sightseeing, eating Philly Cheesesteaks(grandson Zack’s top goal), and enjoyingquality time together.

Two of our favorite stops were the SimeoneFoundation Auto Museum and ConstitutionCenter. Both museums have accomplishedthe near impossible—providing dramaticexhibits that appeal to a 13­year­old girl,two teenage boys, as well as adults.

At the Simeone, we viewed race carsfrom 1909 to the present—each withclear signage giving the car’s racinghistory and context of the challenges ofits day. In the auto repair shop, wevisited with the volunteers who keepeach car in running order and who love

sharing the stories of the magnificent cars.

Located just south of Philadelphia, this museum is worth a visit, if not inperson, then at least on the Web: www.simeonemuseum.org.

At Constitution Center, right indowntown Philadelphia, and facingIndependence Hall, we began withthe sound­and­light show explaininghow our nation’s Constitution cameto shape our government. Then wespread out to explore the exhibits,with each one of us pickingsomething different—from trying onjudicial robes (Why do the SupremeCourt justices wear plain black robesand not the ornate red robes andpowdered wigs of the British court?), to taking the Presidential Oath ofOffice (with a photo of the Capitol Steps behind you), to exploringPresidential election options on computer screens. And we all took ourphotos with the Founding Fathers in Signers’ Hall (see photo). If you makea trip to Philly, please check out Constitution Center. Here learning is trulyfun, and you will come away with a whole new respect for our country’sheritage. www.ConstitutionCenter.org
