Review of current reading strategies#1) Look at the title and make a prediction about the potential content of the story. Try to visualize the content. #2) Identify cognates and familiar verbs to help establish meaning. #3) Don’t stress trying to understand every word in your reading. Use context clues to guess the meaning of words that you don’t know. You can still get the “gist” or main idea of the paragraph with a “loose” translation. #4) As you read, highlight or underline key words that might be important to the meaning of the story. #5) To avoid feeling overwhelmed, try to focus on reading one paragraph at a time. #6) After each paragraph make a mental note or write a note in the margin about the main idea of the paragraph. #7) Ask yourself after concluding the reading – what was the author’s purpose?
