What is an energy reduction competition?

Competition to see which building or metered space can achieve the biggest percent reduction in electricity use during a competition period in comparison to a baseline period.

Step 1: Form a Competition Organizing Team

● Determine roles

● Involve different groups - facilities, sustainability, building occupants

● Outline a competition planning timeline

● Most common organizing team size: 4-7 members

Step 2: Determine competition structure & design

● Short term vs. long term

● Participating groups and buildings

● Baseline and competition dates

Step 3: Identify & set up competition data

Determine how you are collecting data from each meter & how it will be presented. If you’re using BuildingOS:

● Log in → Apps → Competitions → ‘Create a new competition’

● Confirm you have online meter data for each participating space

Step 4: Develop engagement plan

Determine what events you’ll be able to run and how to educate participants.

● Choose a name & theme to brand your competition● Schedule competition events● Choose competition awards & prizes● Utilize behavior change tools - feedback, norms, prompts, etc.
