Challenge
▪ In the South China Seas, shallow gas accumulations in the subsurface result in significant variations of
the seismic wave properties in localized regions of the subsurface resulting in velocity anomalies,
frequency attenuation and coherency distortions that obscure structural and stratigraphic features in
the subsurface and limit the potential of direct hydrocarbon indicators analysis of the seismic
wavefield. Distortions and noise in the seismic image also lead to uncertainty in associated well
planning.
Solution
▪ Echos seismic processing workflows were used to improve multiple attenuation and to enhance the
primary seismic energy in the gas cloud areas.
▪ Coherency inversion methods were used to build an initial velocity-depth model which was then refined
through horizon-based tomography. This refined velocity model was then used in pre-stack depth
migration to deliver a significantly enhanced seismic image of the subsurface.
Result
▪ Reprocessing of an existing seismic survey using modern seismic processing and imaging algorthms
to enhance the seismic signal and reduce nose avoided the expense of acquiring a new seismic
survey.
▪ A successful well was drilled based on the reprocessed seismic data
