ince 1942 the Clifton Field was the home of a horse
named Dynamite Jack but it seemed like he didn’t belong
there with all the other horses. He used to live in a stable in
Sandston were he belonged. Day in and day out for 3
months he would sit out and watch all the other horses
compete in races and win trophies. “I wish I could win
trophies like all the other horses but I am not good enough
to compete,” Dynamite Jack sighed.
1
o one wanted anything to do with the horse
because they knew he would always come last and never
achieve the standards to become a good racing horse. He
was different to all the other horses, he didn’t believe in
himself and he never really practiced or even tried to jump
fences and gallop fast.
2
ne day all of the other horses did not let
Dynamite Jack in or near their training field. “Why aren’t
you letting me in?” Dynamite Jack shrieked. “Because you
can’t run fast or jump fences, all you do is sit down and
watch us win trophies and have all of the glory.” Dynamite
Jack tried to ignore him but he couldn’t so he went for a
gallop to think about what the other horses had aggressively
and hurtfully said.
3
hen he was nearly there it started to hail, storm and
mist over. “Where am I? I can’t see anything!” Dynamite
Jack said in concern. So he galloped as fast as he could to
something blurry that he could just make out to be a
mountain. Soon the bad weather cleared up and formed a
beautiful rainbow over the mountains. “That rainbow is
beautiful! I’m heading straight there to find me a pot of
hay.” So Dynamite Jack crossed the lake over the river and
set out to find his pot of hay.
4
hen he reached the end of the rainbow there was
nothing to be seen. He wanted to keep looking but it
started to thunder severely. “I guess now I have to go back
now,” Dynamite Jack said in disappointment. He galloped
back to the lake only to find the bridge had been struck by
lightning and snapped in half and the only way he could get
across was to jump.
5
H NO!” He wailed. “I can’t jump that far.”
6
ut deep down he knew what he had to do and he knew
he had to do it fast. Once he was confident and brave
enough to jump the lake he took a 200 metre run up; he
took in a deep breath, braced himself and sprinted towards
the lake, dodging anything that got in his path. He leaped a
giant leap that he almost hit his head on the tree branch
above. He cleared the lake by 10 metres and conquered his
biggest fear.
7
es, I did it! I am the best and most proud horse in the
universe!” screamed Dynamite Jack in joy. He was so
relieved, proud and happy to be the horse he was, Dynamite
Jack.
I am the best
and most proud
horse in the
universe!
8
e was so desperate to brag to all of the other horses
what he had achieved; he sprinted all the way to the field
nearly killing one of the jockeys by the fright of the horse
travelling 350 kilometres. “Hey, was that Dynamite Jack.”
the jockey thought to himself in confusion.
9
hen he had reached the training field in about 15
seconds and told all of the other horses how far he could
jump and how fast he could gallop they did not believe
him. “No way,” said one of the horses. “Yeah, you’re just a
lazy, old horse.” screamed another.
No
Way!
Yeah,
you’re just
a lazy, old
horse.
I can jump
and run fast
like you guys.
10
ut when Dynamite Jack built up his confidence and
started to train with all the other horses they felt ashamed,
proved wrong and started to envy Dynamite Jack. “I guess
he was telling the truth,” one horse whispered to another. It
was then when all the jockeys realised how good Dynamite
Jack really was, because they could not decide who would
get to ride and own the horse it came down to just simply
picking a name out of a hat.
11
he lucky jockey who was riding the horse was..........
DAI O’RHEA
You’re my
horse
now!
12
hen Dynamite Jack would start to compete in
races and become famous around the world, he would win
trophy after trophy. In the end Dynamite Jack respected
and was grateful of the horse he was and the horse he
became.
I feel good
about who
I am!
