1. From the top menu, select “Groups” “Create Group”

3. Select a reference. Then drag and drop it to a group. (You may assign a reference to more than one group.)

2. Enter the group name and grouping criteria. Then click “Create”.

4. Move the cursor to where you want the reference(s) be cited

Any changes in reference information (e.g. fix a typo) need to be done in the EndNote library (not the Word document).

After changes have been made, click “Update Citations and Bibliography” in Word to re-generate the citations.

You can change the referencing style anytime. All citations will be automatically reformatted.

Obtain more referencing styles

• EndNote offers more than 6,000 referencing styles for download on its website. – http://endnote.com/downloads/styles

• Some journal publishers also provide the EndNote referencing style files for their journals for download. – E.g. http://authorservices.wiley.com/jendnotes/

• The downloaded referencing style files have to be put into the EndNote style folder in local computer. (Default location: C:\Program Files\EndNote X7\Styles)

EndNote Library

• You may have more than one EndNote library for different purposes.

– E.g. one for each research project

• However, once you cite from one library in a Word document, you cannot easily change.

• There are different ways to enter author names for a reference. – Tiberius Rex

[last word treated as the Last name]

– Morre, Nicole [Last name - comma - First name]

– Smith, Williams G.

– de Gaulle, Charles

– de Young, John Robert, Jr. [Last Name - comma - First Name - comma - Title]

– University of California, [the whole unit treated as the last name]
