RF.K.2Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds (phonemes).

Recognize and produce rhyming words

In this lesson, students will practice matching picture cards that rhyme. By using the pictures as cues, the students can attack the idea of rhyming building a foundation for reading readiness.

Utilize the pictures below for sorting rhymes, use objects in your home, pictures from magazines, or even pictures that you have the student draw and color. (whatever engages your student is the key to success)

To begin:You can have the students color matching pairs while you discuss that rhyming words rhyme because they sound the same at the end of the word.

Give the student two pictures that rhyme such as cat/rat and discuss that they rhyme because they both say at on the end of the word

Con’t through all the pairs (then you are ready to start using the with the rhyming mat)

Rhyme Sorting: Give the student a rhyming mat Put a picture card in the picture card box Have the student go through 5-10 picture cards to find a match (be sure that there is a match in

the 5-10 group) Consistently remind the student that rhyming words sound the same at the end and give them

examples like hat/cat because they both say at on the end of the word

e

Recommendations for extension: Lay the cards face down and play a game of memory matching rhyming words to rhyming words Play “Go Fish”

o Student one asks student 2 for a word that rhymes with _______. If they have one, they give it and the student lays the cards on the table. If not, the student draws one card and it is the next student’s turn.

Play UNO, if the student has a card that rhymes with the card on the pile, they may play it. If not, they draw a card

Matching pairso Have all the cards on a table face up.

o Student picks one card and then has to say the word of the picture, next they find a matching rhyming word card

o Con’t until all cards are matched
