Editorial
“French region Pays de la Loire region has always been and is more than ever an agile, innovation-oriented region.
Throughout industrial and economical mutations, it has stood out, and has become every time a leader in its Excellence Areas (shipbuilding, aircraft construction, etc.)
Our region, historically known for its thick industrial network, has entered the digital era. Pays de la Loire is the only French region where every territory is “French Tech” labelled. It is no coincidence! The high-levelled teachings provided have favoured our young population to adapt very early to New Technologies. The entrepreneur spirit that lives among our young and more senior professional networks has done the rest. In this way, we have witnessed the blooming of several champions renown beyond our borders, such as SensorWake and 10-Vins, to name but two. They are examples and mentors in the digital domain, who encourage our traditional companies to enter the now-essential digital transformation, if all the industrial sectors want to remain and lead the way in the economic competition. This year, Pays de la Loire commits to its companies by taking them to Las Vegas CES. Our diversity is one of our attractiveness’ assets. We are proud to promote together – with companies of all sizes – our various expertise areas, our start-ups dynamism and to support the digital revolution happening in the region’s companies. This fighting spirit which animates the Region is perfectly illustrated by the Vendée Globe Challenge, that some of us know as “the race of the impossible”. When the CES starts, sailors will be fighting the elements, thanks to “made in Pays de la Loire technologies”, some of which will be presented on the French Village where the delegation will be hosted. Visit us on the French Village!”
Bruno Retailleau, President of French region Pays de la Loire

CES 2017: French region Pays de la Loire promotes its digital branch
The issue is to promote the attractiveness of the region’s digital transformation achievements and structures worldwide. Created in 1967, the Consumer Electronics Show has become the most important international fair dedicated to technological innovations in mainstream electronics. It is hosted every year in Las Vegas, Nevada, and is organized by the Consumer Technology Association. The CES Innovations Awards ceremony is the annual main gathering that makes the news regarding digital technologies. A delegation from the Pays de la Loire region (Western France) will be present at the Las Vegas CES from January 5th to 8th 2017, in order to promote the region’s digital attractiveness and strengthen its companies’ visibility. With 3 500 exhibitors, 20 000 new products and 175 000 expected visitors, the CES is the inescapable international meeting where the digital key trends emerge, and where the true strategic stakes that will rule tomorrow’s society are determined. All the actors involved in the global digital economy are gathering there, creating unique collaboration opportunities.
The French Village, a fairground for the Pays de la Loire’s excellence.
“Vendée Globe”, “the 24 Hours of Le Mans”: the Pays de la Loire’s international brands The Pays de la Loire region delegation will be hosted on the “French Village” where the skills and iconic regional successes will be shown. Several animations will be organized: This business trip will be driven by the Pays de la Loire region and International Chamber of
Commerce and Industry, as part of a collective initiative involving digital actors, such as ADN Ouest,
Images & Networks clusters, along with the 5 regional “French Tech” labels. All in all, 45 structures
will compose the delegation: 34 companies including 14 exhibitors, 11 organizations such as
clusters, French Tech or cities.

The “French West Coast”: a connected innovation
territory, with know-how and life quality as
the 2 pillars of the region’s attractiveness
The Pays de la Loire region has embraced digital technology very early. Its start-ups’ strong digital know-how and the digital transformation happening in all its industrial-sectored companies, are the symbol of its economic attractiveness. In the meantime, its privileged geographic position and its economic dynamism make it an exceptional territory where tomorrow’s investments are developing.
9 competitiveness hubs and 11 clusters illustrate the Pays de la Loire’s specific networking culture. Moreover, the 5 “French Tech” labels of Angers, Laval, Le Mans, la Vendée and Nantes confirm this commitment and this opening to the digital technologies world.
The digital sector invigorates the Pays de la Loire’s companies in all sectors. It is shown by the use of new digital tools but also by the managerial Cultural Revolution that the digital sector has initiated in professional practices. The French West Coast is a territory where digital transformation has already been launched and started to prove itself. It is the case in small structures: start-ups are inventing new products, but also in bigger companies, in which management practices have been transformed, relations becoming more transversal, etc. -
A region with infrastructures favouring business and lifestyle
The Pays de la Loire region is definitely very attractive for start-ups to settle, between professional opportunites and quality of life. Gary Shapiro’s - President of the Consumer Technology Association and true “Digital Pope”- successive visits in 2015 and 2016 at Angers’ Cité de l’Objet Connecté prove it. Back in October, he said to be “impressed by the regional passion for new technologies and innovation”2.
The Pays de la Loire region profits from a privileged position on the French territory. Connected to Europe by train, with 20 daily trips to Paris and back, and a connection with Belgium in 3 hours. A 660- kilometre highway network links the North to the South – London, Brussels, Spain and Portugal, and the first Western France international airport.
« Nantes Saint-Nazaire » is the first harbour of the Atlantic coast. It is an essential world connection for the French West Coast which targets the global market.

FOCUS: the « Smart city » rewarded in Nantes
The city of Nantes has won a European call for projects in July 2016, which associates the Pays de la Loire capital to Helsinki and Hamburg to defend “mySMARTLife” project. It relies on the implementation of innovative solutions regarding mobility, energetic renovation, renewable energies or public lighting smart management before 2020.

STORY OF A START-UP - HECTOR AND GASPARD
Morgan Lavaux, manager and co-founder of Hector - the connected cube (https://www.misterhector.com/), and Valentin Roy, chairman and co-founder, will unveil Gaspard, their new product, at CES 2017. “We are going to the CES for the second year in a row”, they say, brimming with excitement. “Last year, we were invited to the CES and we presented Hector without really expecting much to come of it. In the end, it proved to be a tremendous springboard!”
Hector, a product designed at the Cité de l’Objet Connecté in Angers, quickly rose to prominence, and the CES 2016 helped the young entrepreneurs to make a number of valuable contacts, especially in French retail channels. “The CES really works as an accelerator for young start-ups. It saved us at least a year’s work!” they added. This year, Morgan and Valentin are set to lift the curtain on Gaspard, an intelligent mat that connects to a smartphone. When placed under the base of a wheelchair, Gaspard acts as a positioning tracker measuring in real time how much pressure a person is putting on it. The idea is to update them on what is happening under the base and remind them of the importance of maintaining a good position in the wheelchair. Drawing on their previous experience, Morgan and Valentin created the first production runs of this new product at the Cité de l’Objet Connecté in Angers. EOLANE Angers (the Cité is its subsidiary) then took them under its wing, giving them access to a broad range of professionals. Two functional Gaspard prototypes have already been released, and the industrialization phase is underway. Following its selection by Business France, Gaspard will be showcased on its own stand. The CES 2017 will be used to accelerate its launch and warehouse questions, so that improvements can be made more rapidly. The Business France section will provide a springboard for Gaspard, highlighting its effectiveness against back pain and other medical issues associated with staying in the same position for too long. Morgan Lavaux and Valentin Roy added: “Gaspard serves the BtoC health and wellness market. Our goal is to move rapidly and demonstrate the effectiveness of the product, so that we can gain the necessary authorizations for doctors to prescribe it. Our fabulous adventure would never have got off the ground without the support of the Pays de la Loire region and its commitment to digital technology, since it provided us with funds and dedicated staff. We realize that we are part of a much broader movement, and that gives us confidence. The Pays de la Loire region is encouraging young entrepreneurs such as us to invest in future-oriented projects.”

PORTRAIT OF A TRADITIONAL BUSINESS: TERRENA The Pays de la Loire delegation also features Terrena (http://www.terrena.fr/), a cooperative of forward looking farmers, who propose a new form of “ecologically intensive” agriculture (produce more and better, using less) as a new technology platform. The aim is to provide:
farmers with a way of working that combines efficiency with a high-caliber workplace
consumers with products meeting their needs in line with a coherent “farm to fork” vision.
Terrena represents the success of the digital transformation of traditional businesses in the Loire region. This cooperative based in Ancenis, right at the heart of the Pays de la Loire region, has close to 14,000 employees in Western France (a majority in the region) and recorded sales of €5bn in 2015. According to Guillaume Ardillon, Head of Digital at Terrena (cf. adjacent picture), agriculture is a sector ripe for investment. In 2016, $5bn was ploughed into agritech, representing a 100% increase on 2014 and 2015. Eric Schmidt, Google’s former CEO, owns a $2bn fund dedicated to agriculture. “It is the fastest-growing part of the tech universe because it has the highest data volumes and also the largest number of regulations”, explained Guillaume Ardillon. “Terrena accounts for around 50,000 jobs, which firmly anchors us in the region’s fabric over the long term”.
Terrena is a traditional business that was very quick to embrace digital technology. Since 2008, it has staged “Terrenales events” showcasing digital technology and the latest agricultural tools, such as drones, satellite analysis, connected viewing devices for farmers and 3D printing for veterinary applications. A digital and technology-driven approach lies at the core of Terrena’s DNA, as well as being a central concern in the French and even the worldwide farming sector. For example, Terrena visited Silicon Valley in 2012 to find out about the latest digital innovations and has already introduced decision support systems for its farmers to increase efficiency (more technical management approach, better suited to farms) and reduce the physical stresses and strains on its workers (robotic systems with exoskeletons to lighten loads, for instance). Guillaume Ardillon is attending the CES 2017 in Las Vegas to represent Terrena for the first time. He has three goals for the event:
1. Identify the opportunities harnessed by traditional businesses in their digital transformation, both internally (production) and externally (sales)
2. Spot innovative start-ups with which it could work, for the benefit of its customers and farmers
3. Get a feel for the major trends in digital products and business models.
“The CES will give us the chance to meet our customers and partners on a more informal basis, generating new ideas for partnerships in the digital arena in a dedicated framework!” commented Guillaume Ardillon. The farming world has resolutely pursued modernization, and Terrena has not been left behind as investing in digital technology for its members is one of its strategic priorities. In 2016, Hubert Garaud, Terrena’s Chairman emphasized: “Thirty years ago the farming world was too slow in adapting to the changes in retail. Let’s not miss the digital technology boat!”

Digital transformation (completed or ongoing) – a key to success in sectors targeted by investors in Pays de la Loire
Industrial electronics and digital
In Pays de la Loire, the industrial electronics sector accounts for around 25,000 jobs, with 3,900 students pursuing their initial training and over 250 research scientists. With the support of the regional authorities and of Angers Loire Métropole and backed by European funds (Feder), industrial electronics R&D, training organizations and businesses in the Pays de la Loire region have embarked on a joint program to develop new markets and new applications. This major initiative has four main points of focus:
connected objects
smart sensors
smart power (power for electronics and electronics for power)
materials for different forms of integration.
West Electronic & Applications Network: Located in Angers, the “We Network” cluster brings together industrial electronics manufacturers and users. This strategically important industry contributes 10% of global GDP. The We Network has 176 members (businesses, educational institutions, research labs, clusters, institutional partners). The We Network’s main role is to coordinate and harness the value of the network of French industrial electronics users and manufacturers, support businesses with their innovation, R&D and business development, run the Industrial electronics campus, a leading European expertise-
based program, for electronics design and production companies in the Grand Ouest area of western France. www.we-n.eu
National industry players, such as Accenture, Cap Gemini, DSIV SNCF and Eolane, are also involved.
Health and therapies of the future Pays de la Loire is home to 15% of France’s biotechnology companies. It is the leading region in radiotherapy (Cyclotron Arronax) in terms of the number of patients and systems installed. Major companies such as Biofortis (BioMérieux), a crop of innovative start-ups at the Atlanpole Biothérapies hub and some leading research organizations including
INSERM are all established there.
10
Advanced Production Technologies (APTs)
Pays de la Loire, the number one region in France for composite technologies and the number two for civil aerospace, has attracted major groups such as Airbus Group, ACI Renault and Michelin. EMC2 is one of three regional skills clusters, an innovative competitiveness cluster dedicated to APTs set up in July 2005 by Airbus, STX France, Auto Châssis International (Renault Group), DCNS and Beneteau. Through an innovation-based approach, it aims to develop the competitiveness of industrial companies, their customers and SMEs. Over the past 11 years, this competitiveness cluster has officially endorsed 375 projects.
The major players include CEMCAT, the Technocampus Composites and the Jules Verne technological research institute.
Renewable marine energies (RME)
With its two wind farms at Saint-Nazaire and Noirmoutier, which won competitive tenders held by the French Government, Pays de la Loire has established itself as a prime mover in the “new maritime economy”. Over 1,000 research scientists are based in the Nantes region in 2017, working for global leaders such as GE Renewable Energy, DCNS, Rollix and STX France. The renewables sector is attractive for both major operators and for start-ups as they can establish themselves through innovation. From the high-capacity port and logistics infrastructure to the wealth of testing resources and multi-technology platforms, everything is geared to fostering rapid and sustainable growth in the sector.
Agrifood industry
The agrifood industry is a major sector of activity in Pays de la Loire region, accounting for 24% of salaried employment compared with a national average of 17%. Excluding smallest businesses operating in the sector, the 1,095 agrifood companies employ close to 50,000 people. The meat, dairy and industrial bakery/cake sectors account for over three-quarters of the jobs,
11
sales and value-added by the region’s agrifood industries. They generated sales of €11.6bn, or 8% of nationwide sales, and €1.9bn in value-added, or 7% of the value-added by French agrifood companies3.
The agrifood industry in Pays de la Loire, France’s second largest after Brittany, is known for its strong local focus and national brands that have grown from local companies (BN, Charal, Eurial, Fleury Michon and Tipiak) with significant expertise and ability to innovate, as they seek to keep pace with consumers’ changing tastes and to provide improved working conditions for their employees. The education and research sector is made up of 14 research and higher education institutions, over 40 research teams and labs and over 500 research scientists and teaching staff, not to mention more than 1,000 students they train every year. It also includes a number of competitiveness hubs (Valorial, Végépolys, etc.) and clusters (Nova CHILD, Atlanpole Blue Cluster, etc.), plus regional innovation platforms (PRI), namely Nov’alim, Ligépack, Agriculture biologique, which form a network coordinated and run by Cap Aliment (http://www.capaliment.fr/).
Creative and cultural industries
In 2014, the cultural and creative industries already accounted for close to 90,000 private-sector jobs in Pays de la Loire, or 7.9% of the region’s private-sector employment. Private-sector employment in the creative and cultural industries has risen by 7.5% since 2008 in Pays de la Loire. These sectors of activity are growing more rapidly than other sectors of the Pays de la Loire economy (+3.3% rise overall).
Stereolux
Stereolux, housed in “La Fabrique” at the heart of the historic “Île de Nantes”, is a cultural and artistic project focused on contemporary music and digital technology. It is run by the Songo nonprofit association. Stereolux works alongside cultural organizations, higher-education institutions and creative and innovative businesses. The program has five different strands: music, digital culture & arts, an arts & technologies laboratory, learn & do, and young audiences. They all aim to disseminate, raise awareness of and promote the creation of contemporary and future artistic forms. Concerts, shows,
installations, performances, workshops and conferences are held in various dedicated venues (2 concert halls, 5 digital and multimedia creation studios, 1 exhibition area). Stereolux’ Arts & Technologies lab aims to promote cooperation between artists, researchers and businesses. It also strives to raise public awareness of artistic and digital practices and to bring these disciplines to the attention of as many people as possible.

Shipbuilding
With its 450km-long Atlantic coastline, Pays de la Loire houses France’s leading ship- and boat-building industry (over 10,000 jobs). The new dynamic of the Saint-Nazaire shipyards serves as a fine example of the competitiveness opportunities created by digital technology in traditional sectors of industry. For example, the digitization of procedures at the STX France facility has given its business a whole new lease of life.
Order books full until 2020 Following the May 2016 delivery of the Harmony of the Seas, the world’s largest cruise ship (length: 362m, beam 66m), STX France has received five other orders for cruise liners, due for delivery at a pace of around two vessels per year.
