Abstract
This research paper aims to study influence of western media in Indian television. The
study analyses two Indian popular show adapted from west nations – Bigg Boss and
Kaun Banega Crorepati. The study use content analysis as research methodology. The
findings of the result suggest that Indian television is influenced by western media.
Findings suggest that celebrity anchors / host are one of the reason for the success
such programmes. The study finds that local elements are blend with western
elements for popularising the show.

IntroductionTelevision is the most popular medium in India. It has occupied an important
position in homes. Television broadcasting industry in India is a very huge industry
and has thousands of programs in almost all states of India. Almost half of the
households in India own a television. There are many channels available in India,
which provides different types of programs to audience. When television invented in
India it is used as a tool for development of the nation, but later television become the
entertaining medium. It is Television has profound impact on our society. It has
changed the life styles of the people and has become a major influence in our culture.
Unlike printing, which took hundreds of years to influence the culture, TV's impact
was almost instantaneous. Indian television industry faced many developmental
changes. Today after digitalization the audiences have choice to select their favorite
channel and pay only for that.
There are various successful Indian television shows which influenced Indian
society. But today most of the Indian television programs are either adapted or copied
from the west. The topic for the research is ‘how Indian TV shows adapt the west’.
There are many popular shows which is adapted from west are popular in India. For
the study selected three major programs which are kon banege crorepati, big boss.
These programs are adapted from west and also successful in India.
Literature Review
Hill (2002) investigated the features of a specific program, the British version of Big
Brother, that were most liked by viewers. Hill found that watching cast members cope

with the privations of the Big Brother house and watching conflict among the cast
were the most popular aspects of the show.
Hall A. (2009) investigated whether viewer perceptions of reality programs'
authenticity were associated with involvement, enjoyment, and perceived learning.
Four dimensions of perceived authenticity were identified: cast eccentricity,
representativeness, candidness, and producer manipulation. Perceptions that the cast
was not eccentric, that they were representative of people the respondents could meet,
that they were behaving candidly, and that the producers were manipulating the show
were associated with cognitive involvement. Cast representativeness was also
positively associated with social involvement. Each form of involvement was
associated with enjoyment. Perceptions of the cast members' representativeness,
candidness, and lack of eccentricity were associated with perceived learning.
Roy .Enkshi (2011) in his research study stated that in the game show Kaun
Banega Crorepati, which is adapted from the original British show Who Wants to be a
Millionaire? the original elements that were retained in the show included the
question-answer format with four-option style of quizzing, graphics, music, arena-
style seating for the studio audience, and the shots in which the television cameras
zoomed in on the one contestant sitting under the lights on the hot seat. Many catch
phrases, style of speaking and even some host postures were retained. These elements
of the format helped the show retain its global identity.

Limitation of the study
There are lots of foreign adapted shows in India; some examples are Khatron Ke
Khiladi (Fear Factor), Dus ka Dum (power of Ten), India’s got talent ( America got
talent) Indian idol ( American idol), Jassi Jassi Koi Nahin – Yo Soy Betty La Fea,
Kum Kum Bhagya ( sense and sensibility)etc. for the study looking only two shows
which are still going through Indian channels.
Theoretical framework
Social learning theory is the view that people learn by observing others. Associated
with Albert Bandura's work in the 1960s, social learning theory explains how people
learn new behaviors, values, and attitudes. This theory is used to learn audience’s
perception about the popular Indian reality show – Bigg Boss.
Methodology and sample

The methodology for the study is content analysis. Content Analysis is
described as the scientific study of content of communication. It is the study of the
content with reference to the meanings, contexts and intentions contained in
messages.
This study tests by using content analysis of two popular programs in India
which are adapted from west. The shows are Kaun Banega crorepati (who wants to be
a Millionaire), Big Boss (Big Brother) in order to conduct the content analysis four
categories are made;
1-Setting,
2-Dressing,
3- Culture representation,
4- Language.
FINDINGS AND ANALYSIS
Television industry is most successful business in India. There are more than 500
channels in India. Till now there are number of programmes telecasted in different
channels. Doordarshan ventured into soap operas in Hindi with Hum Log in July

1984, it proved very popular. In 1987 and 1988 came the hugely popular mythological
serials, Ramayana and Mahabharat. After liberalization in broadcasting sector, there
are many private and foreign media established in India. These new channels
produced different kinds of entertainment programs. They introduced new programs
which were popular in foreign countries and Indian audience accepted this programs.
KBC and Big Boss are the most popular among those programs in India.
KAUN BANEGA CROREPATI vis-à-vis WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE
‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ originated in Britain in 1998, Hosted by Chris
Tarrant, With a format of answering 12-15 multiple choice questions sequentially
with increasing difficulty, the show gives out a winning amount of one million
pounds. The Indian version of the ‘Who wants to be a Millionaire’ Kaun Banega
Crorepati (KBC) was launched on July 3, 2000, and was telecasted on Star Plus. It
was telecasted from Monday to Thursday, 9 PM to 10 PM. The show brought Hindi
cinema’s biggest star Amitabh Bachchan on television for the first time. Within weeks
the show becomes popular in India. KBC was the only program of that kind which is
same time a game show and a reality based show. Common men and women were put
on television and the contestant’s response determined the flow of the show. The
show has had 8 seasons over 15 years. The show was hosted by Amithab Bachan in
2000, 2005, 2010,2011,2012,2013, and 2014; its third season in 2007 was hosted by
Shah Rukh Khan.
The first three seasons of the show was telecasted on Star Plus. All other
seasons of the show was broadcasted on Sony. Star Plus started KBC on July 3, 2000.
The first few days of KBC received a lukewarm welcome, but within two weeks, it

gripped the imagination of the nation. When the audience realized one could win big
money, the reaction was frenzied. When the phone lines opened for the second time
for registration, there were 800,000 calls on the first day, from the city of Kolkata
alone. Such was the craze that on July 24, after three weeks of the show, three million
people registered on the same day, taking down the phone lines of the show (Thomas,
2006). After two months from the launch of the show, KBC was the highest-rated
program between 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. in cable and satellite homes (Bajpai, 2000).
The second season of KBC started in 2005. The prize money for the second
season was doubled to Rs 20 million ($550,000). KBC 2 started on August 5, 2005.
This time the show was telecast on weekends, Friday through Sunday 9pm to 10pm.
The show began with a high TRP of 19.75, and subsequently dropped to 15.07 and
10.33 by the second and third episodes respectively (Bhusan, 2007). The second
season was planned with 85 episodes, which would have aired from August 2005 to
February 2006, but the show came to an abrupt halt after 61 episodes when Bachchan
fell ill. The second seasons had 120 million people registering for the show (Sheikh,
2008).
KBC 3 hosted by Shah Rukh Khan started on January 22, 2007 and was on-air
till April 19, 2007. The contestants who could not play the game in the second season
because of the sudden halt in the game were all accommodated in the first few
episodes of the third season. KBC-3 opened at a TRP of 12.33 with STAR Plus share
going up to 60% from 37.7% the week before However, the show's ratings dropped
significantly; the second day of the show, ratings slip to 10.44, and 7.36 in the third
episode. The final episode of the week saw ratings climb to 9.24 (Bhusan, 2007).The
season ended on 19 April 2007.

The fourth season of the show started on October11, 2010, Bachan was back
as host in this season. The fourth season was telecasted on Sony TV. Again the show
gained high TRP ratings within few weeks. The program is produced by Sony
Pictures Television, which owns the format, but Siddhartha Basu remained the
director and creative head. The new logo designed for the fourth season incorporated
the new Indian Rupee symbol, which was unveiled the same year. The season ended
on 9 December 2010.
Season five was aired on 15th of August 2011 and continued till 17th of
November. In this season KBC get his highest money prize winner Sushil Kumar
from Bihar won 5 crore rupees.
KBC 6 started on 7th of September 2012 and continued till 26th of January
2013. In this season, the team of KBC started a new tradition of special appearance of
socially backward people titled as "Dusra Mauka". Sonali Mukherjee, a victim of acid
throwing, appeared along with Bollywood actor Lara Dutta. This season emotionally
touched audience and the viewership was higher than any other programs.
The season 7 was started on 6 September 2013, exactly after a year of KBC 6,
and ended on 1 December 2013. Due to the huge jackpot of Rs. 70 million, the season
was also referred to as Kaun Banega Maha Crorepati. The season had a few changes,
including a new lifeline called Power Paplu. This lifeline aided those who seek to
revive any already used lifeline. There were total 15 questions to reach jackpot
question The "Kaun Banega Crorepati 2013" set was a 360-degree multimedia stage,
making India the first ever country to change the "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" set
worldwide. There were four questions in the new feature 'Sapta Koti
Sandook (English: The Seventh Jackpot)' that let contestants win from 10 million,

30 million, 50 million and finally 70 million. The system of Fastest Finger First
was also altered, where the winner of leader board formed at the end of 3 questions,
sits on the Hot Seat. With new changes and rules this season also won audience.
KBC8; the last season airs regularly from Monday to Thursday 8.30 pm. The
season ended on 6th November 2014. In this season Narula brothers break the record
of Sushil Kumar - highest money prize winner, by winning 7 crore rupees. This time
KBC broadcasted 4 days in a week it was threat to other channels because at the
same time all other channels aired their popular serials and after launch of KBC they
lost their viewership.
The 15 years of Kaun Banega Crorepati’s journey clearly shows that its
popularity is not decreased. Over the years several new channels were established and
new kinds of programs were introduced. The audience of 2000 and 2014 is totally
different the viewership pattern also changed now they have more choice but still we
can see every season KBC come up with new ideas that impress and attract the
audience, and every time the program had high TRP rating. Bachan is the important
element for its success. When Sharukh Khan was host in one of the season the TRP
ratings was comparatively lower than other seasons. It is said that Amithabh Bachan’s
popularity and his way of communication to the audience and contestants is the
signature of the show. Even though Sharukh khan has popularity in India but still
through the third season (2007) proved that no one can replace the anchor seat of Big
B. The choice of Bachchan as host was a key to the process of attracting Indian
audience there is no such film star in India who would connect with Indian audience.
This is where Kaun Banega Crorepati is significantly different from its Western
counterparts. While in India the show is hosted by iconic Bollywood actors, the

versions in the United States and United Kingdom were hosted by moderately
eminent television personalities. Regis Philbin, the host of the U.S. version of the
Millionaire, was a media personality who was known more as a talk show host than a
game show host (Baber, 2008).
The show always tries to attract the local audience; for them money is a big
matter. In a country that has 17.6% (Wikipedia 2015) of the world’s population, and
with a per capita income as low as $1,250 in 2013, 1crore is a huge amount; Most
Indians could not even dream of earning this large amount in a lifetime, but if they
were lucky and smart they could win that amount in an hour. In the first season the
prize was 1 crore rupees but the amount increased in every season the prize amount
for the last season was 7 crore rupees. The questions for the show is designed in a way
that it can develop a feeling in audience that they can also know the answer and it can
lead them to participate in the show. The questions are asked as per the qualification
of participants. Questions for middle class person and high class person will be
different. This is one of the reasons for the success of the show; it created an image
that anyone can participate in the show.
Hindi, being the official national language, was chosen as the primary
medium of communication; however the host would always repeat the question in
English, as there are numerous Indians who do not understand all Hindi words. The
graphics on the screen that showed the question and its four options were always in
English, and this was taken from the original format. KBC also came up with certain
catchphrases and its own logo, which became very popular throughout the country
like computer ji, power puplu, tik tok ji,thriguni. Except the first three seasons all
other seasons had taglines in hindi, that tag lines are:- "Koi Bhi Insaan Chota Nahi
Hota" (English: No Human is Small), "Koi Bhi Sawaal Chota Nahi

Hota"(English: No Question is Small) (Literary means: Every Question is Important),
"Sirf Gyaan Hi Aapko Aapka Haq Dilata Hai" (English: Just the knowledge that
draws your right as you), "Seekhna Bandh Toh Jeetna Bandh" (English: Learning
stops so Winning stops) , "Yahan Sirf Paise Nahi, Dil Bhi Jeete Jate Hain" (English :
here you can won not only money but also hearts).
The look and the attire of the host closely resembled that of the British and
American counterparts. Bachchan wore formal suits with a tie, but for the special
episodes involving celebrities he was seen in traditional Indian attire, kurta-pyjama
and shawl. Every season wardrobe for the anchor is designed by popular fashion
designers. In the first four seasons it was formal suits with light toned colors, but in
the 6th to 8th season Bachan wore the velvet suit which resembles Indian sharwani.
Likewise in one way or other the show always tries to connect with Indian culture and
tradition. The set was designed by one of Bollywood’s art director. The set design is
influenced from the original show ‘who wants to be a millionaire’. Till the sixth
season the set was same but in seventh season they made some changes.
Fifteen years eight seasons but same popularity among audience there are
many reasons for the success of the show most important factor is the team always
tries to maintain its quality; and they consider audience and contestants from different
class. The target audience for the show includes all class and age group.
After a whole decade, the show made a full-circle. A foreign format inspired
an Indian show, a book was written about it, and the book got picked up by an
international director and turned into a global hit movie. The success of the movie
Slumdog Millionaire renewed the interest of India about the show (Roy, 2011).

BIGG BOSS vis-à-vis BIG BROTHER
‘Bigg Boss’ is the Indian version of foreign reality show Big Brother. The show
featured few celebrities who were locked in a house and were supposed to carry out
some tasks as assigned by the ‘big boss’. The format was similar to the Western
counterpart, unlike the versions; the Indian version uses celebrities as housemates, not
members of the general public. The contestants will be the celebrities from India,
exception of one who is a non-celebrity selected via auditions. Big Boss is a reality
show based on the original Dutch Big Brother format developed by John de Mol. The
format was similar to the Western counterpart, the difference being Indian faces and
celebrities graced the house of ‘Bigg Boss’. Here all housemates live in isolation from
the outside world in a "house" that is custom built but includes everyday objects, such
as a fully equipped kitchen and a garden. The House is also a television studio, and
includes cameras and microphones in most of the rooms to record the activity of the
housemates. The only place where housemates can escape the company of the other
contestants is the ‘Confession Room,’ where they are encouraged to voice their true
feelings. Each week all housemates nominate two of their fellows for potential
eviction. Of these, one would eventually leave, having been "evicted" from the House.
However, there were exceptions to this process as dictated by Bigg Boss. In the final
week, there were three housemates remaining, and the public voted for who they
wanted to win.
‘Bigg Boss’ in its ninth season in India from first season to ninth season the
producers made lots of changes. Every time the contestants for the show will be
prominent celebrities especially from television so the audience can easily connect
and also it create an eagerness in audience mind to know more personal about their
favorite star. The first season of the show aired on Sony Entertainment

Television from 3rd November 2006 to 26th January 2007, a total of 86 days. The show
was hosted by Bollywood actor Arshad Warsi. There were total 15 contestants in the
show; Rahul Roy was the 1st winner of this reality show. Carol was the first runner up
and Ravi was the second runner up. This kind of a show was a new experience to
Indian audience so that the show gets mixed response from audience. The votes for
the participant’s shows that the audience was interested in the show, but the show
faced many criticism like the show utilizing the voyeuristic tendency of the viewers
that was exploited by dramatizing the interactions between the inmates.
The second season of the show aired on colors channel it began airing on 21
August 2008. Shilpa Shetty replaced Arshad Warsi as host of the show. The season
lasted for 98 continuous days in total, the show ends with finale on 22 November
2008. Like first season there are 15 contestants were in this season to majority of the
contestants were associated with Bollywood and Indian TV channels and other
realities shows. Ashutosh Kaushik was the winner of the season and Raja Chaudhary
was the runner-up of the show.
Bigg boss 3 aired on 4th October 2009 on Colors with Amitabh Bachchan as
the host and aired for 84 days concluding on 26 December 2009. First week the show
gets low TRP ratings but later it increased. Vindu Dara Singh was the winner of Bigg
Boss Season 3. Parvesh Rana was the first runner-up and poonam dhillon was the
second runner-up of the show. Bigg Boss Season 3 was aired on Colors TV in 2009.
Bigg Boss 4 was the most popular season of the show. It was host by Salman
Khan and aired on colors channel. During the launch on 3rd October, fourteen hand-
picked housemates entered the house located in a hill station, about 100 kilometers
east of Mumbai in the Indian state of Maharashtra. Two additional wild card entries

were made during the second and third weeks, taking the number of contestants to
sixteen. Within weeks the show get high TRP ratings one of the reason for its
popularity is Salman Khan‘s anchoring since fourth season he is hosting the show.
Shweta Tiwari was the winner of Bigg Boss Season 4. She is the first female winner
of the bigg boss TV series. The Great Khali was the runner-up of the show.
Season five of Bigg boss was hosted by Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt
together it was the most attracting part of the season. Salman Khan hosted the opening
and special episodes, with Sanjay Dutt took over the permanent host of the season.
During the launch on 2nd October, fourteen hand-picked housemates entered the house
located in Karjat, a town, about halfway between Mumbai and Pune in the Indian state
of Maharashtra. Four additional wild card entries were made during the second, third,
fourth and the end of seventh week taking the number of contestants to
eighteen. There were 55 cameras placed in the house this season which leads to many
controversies. Fight among contestants was common and this affected its TRP ratings
but later fighting videos were hit in social Medias. The season was won by television
actress Juhi Parmer and Mahek Chahal was the runner-up of the show.
Bigg Boss 6 was aired on 7th October to 12th January 2013. In this season
Salman Khan was back as host in the show. This season was launched as
a Parivarik season with a Gujarati tagline- Alag che! (English: It's different). The
producers claimed that the contestants on Bigg Boss 6 will be presented with a
cleaner, more "family like image". The prize money was reduced to 5 million
rupees. Bigg Boss 6th edition was aired in a Pakistan channel too. Television actress
Urvashi Dholakia was the winner of Bigg Boss Season 6. Imam Siddiqui was the first
runner, Sana Khan was the second runner-up and Niketan Madhok was the third

runner-up. Comparing to 5th season controversies were few and the show get enough
TRP s and advertisement from big companies like Vodafone, Samsung, garanier etc.
Bigg Boss 7 started on 15th September 2013 and continued till 28th December
2013. The seventh season was launched with the tagline- 'Jannat Ka Wow Aur
Jahannam Ka Aaw Dekhege Saath Saath'. This season aired everyday 9 pm, till that
all season aired only in weekend days. In this season new feature introduced ‘The
Bigg Boss Warden’; she monitored inmates and kept them on time. She also worked
as the assistant of Bigg Boss and used to monitor each and every contestant that they
don't break any rule. The series was won by Indian model and actress Gauhar Khan.
The eight season of Bigg Boss started on 21st September 2014 and concluded
in 3rd January 2015. Salman Khan was the host and this time the sponsor for the
program was snapdeal till that Vodafone was the title sponsor. This season aired for
100 days as per its schedule but also there was twist of Bigg boss halla bol that was
host by farah khan. Gautam Gulati is the Winner of Bigg boss season 8 and Karishma
tanna is the 1st runner-up.
Since its first broadcast in 2006 Big Boss has drawn significant attention from
both television audiences and academics across the country. The show now in its
ninth season it is clear that due to its popularity the channel interested to produce its
new seasons. But in the case of ‘Bigg boss’ the popularity is doubtful because critics
says that the show gets attention due to the controversies in the show. Big Boss has
also managed to generate a long list of controversies almost all seasons it has been
broadcasted. Since the initial negative responses to the idea of 24 hours surveillance
of ‘locked’ individuals, this reality show has been host to a series of scandals, each
one of them embedded in the values and morals of the local culture where it was

being produced. Interracial relationships, class disputes, family reunions, unsafe sex
on TV, homosexual proposals, religious conflicts, fairytale love affairs, are just some
examples of events that have contributed to show popularity across the nation. The
show is an adaptation of western show - Big Brother, the theme and idea is same, but
the culture promoted through the show is not popular in Indian society. Every season
producers tries to add more Indian elements to the show but the behaviour of the
participants indirectly promote western life style. Indian audience like to watch
television with family but in case of Bigg Boss sometimes it is difficult to watch with
family.
Most of the seasons of the show hosted by Salman Khan but except him
famous Bollywood stars Amithabh Bachan,Sanjay Dutt and Shilpa Shetty also hosted
the show. When the show started in Sony TV bollywood star Arshad was the anchor
but later in other seasons which were telecasted in Colors channel they tried popular
Bollywood actors as anchor post. Shilpa Shetty was the anchor of second season. She
was one of the contestants in Big Brother and her controversy in the show was quite
famous and it was the reason to choose her as an anchor for the show. Later
Amirthabh also host the show, but his anchoring was not well received by the
audience. But Salman Khan’s anchoring give the program new touch and audience
accepted it. And through this show Salman become the one of the highest paid
celebrity anchor.
The setting of the show is just like the original Big Brother show there will be
one house which have all facilities and under supervision of cameras. And every week
the anchor from studio watch this and eliminate one participant as per the vote of
other members. There are certain rules for participants, it is also adopted from the
original show; while all the rules have never been told to the audience, and the most

prominent ones are clearly seen. The inmates are not permitted to talk in any other
language than Hindi. And they are not supposed to tamper with any of the electronic
equipment or any other thing in the House. They cannot leave the House premises at
any time except when permitted to. And the participants cannot sleep in day time.
Most of the seasons of the show were hosted by Salman Khan. He usually
wore formal suits and the contestants wore western dresses; but in special episodes
like diwali, holi, the host and contestants wore traditional dress and studio and home
will decorate with flowers and lights. The host use simple and colloquial Hindi to
communicate with audience and in the house the announcement from the Bigg boss
for contestants also in Hindi language. The participants use both Hindi and English
for communication, and Bigg Boss also infamous for the abusive language used by
the participants. The contestants conduct pooja in special days. This kind of elements
used in the show to add Indian essence in the show but most of the time it is like
dramatizing the culture.

CONCLUSION
Kaun banga crorepati (KBC) and Bigg Boss are the most popular television shows in
India. These shows are adaptation of western television shows - who wants to be a
millionaire and big brother respectively. Indian versions of the shows are successful
and completed eight seasons. The regional versions of the show also broadcasted in
various Indian channels. The aim of the study is to check the shows were popular or
not and also check whether these show promoting western culture. The method used
for the study is content analysis based on setting, dressing, and language and culture
representation.
The television cameras zoomed in on the one contestant sitting under the lights
on the hot seat. The major replication observed after the episode analyses of different
seasons of the shows are follows; after the study it clear that both programs are
popular in the country. The setting mainly studio and the theme and design of the
studio is just copy of the original show that is western version. In both shows content
and theme is similar like its originals.

The dressing of the anchors in the shows is mostly formal suits which is also
same in western version. But in special episode anchors wore traditional Indian dress
like kurtha and salwar. In both shows anchors using colloquial Hindi to communicate
with participants and audience. So that people can easily connect and feel
comfortable. This is one of the reasons for the success of the shows.
It is also observed that in each season of the shows Indian essences are adding
through dressing language and also setting but it is not complete. In KBC questions
are selected from most popular subject area like Hindu Mythology and cricket. In
Bigg Boss the participants practice pooja and they celebrate traditional festivals.
Some cultures which are promoted through these shows are new for Indians. For
example, in case of big boss it shows homosexual relation and unsafe sex which is not
so popular in India.
Both shows hosted by popular Bollywood stars like Amithab Bachan, Salman
Khan, Sanjay Dutt, Shilpa Shetty. Through this study it is analyzed that celebrity
anchors are one of the reasons for its success. The study found that selecting popular
public figures who can act as authoritarian figures is important in the Indian context,
and Bollywood and cricket are used as specific cultural signifiers for India. In the
western versions these shows are hosted by television anchors but in India popular
celebrities are hosting these shows mainly to attract and influence audience.
To conclude the study found that Indian television industry is influenced by
the western media. Indian television channels are adapting many successful foreign
programs without changing its theme and idea and Indian audience accept these

programs. The study also analyzed that the adapted programs tries to localize the
content by using colloquial language and setting. But these programs are promoting a
new culture in Indian society.
