Chapter 6Process of Deposition of Sediments in the rivers of the District
Deposition is the geological process in which sediments, soil and rocks are added to alandform or land mass. Wind, ice, and water, as well as sediment flowing via gravity, transportpreviously eroded sediment, which, at the loss of enough kinetic energy in the fluid, is deposited, building up layers of sediment.
Deposition occurs when the forces responsible for sediment transportation are no longersufficient to overcome the forces of gravity and friction, creating a resistance to motion, this isknown as the null-point hypothesis. Deposition can also refer to the buildup of sediment fromorganically derived matter or chemical processes. For example, chalk is made up partly of themicroscopic calcium carbonate skeletons of marine plankton, the deposition of which has inducedchemical processes (diagenesis) to deposit further calcium carbonate. Similarly, the formation of coalbegins with deposition of organic material, mainly from plants, in anaerobic conditions.
Sediment in rivers gets deposited as the river slows down. Larger, heavier particles likepebbles and sand are deposited first, whilst the lighter silt and clay only settle if the water is almoststill. The flow of water is strongest on the outside of river bends, eroding the bank, but is slowest onthe inside of the bends, allowing deposition of sand and gravel. When a river “bursts its banks” afterheavy rain, flood water spreads out across the floodplain and, because this water hardly moves, finersilt and clay are deposited – often making good farmland.

Chapter7General Profile of the District
Nagpur district is located in the Deccan Plateau and lies 312.42 mtrs above the mean sealevel. Since it is located at geographical Center of India, the zero milestone of India falls in this city.It is surrounded by Madhya Pradesh State in the North, Bhandara in the East, Chandrapur in theSouth, Wardha in the South-West and Amravati district in the North-West. The major highways NH-7 (VaranasiKanyakumari) and NH-6 (Mumbai-Sambalpur-Calcutta) and major railways trunk route(Mumbai, Chennai, Howrah and Delhi) pass through the city. Important Central and StateGovernment offices and institutions are located in Nagpur. The Industrial area exists along the fringeareas like Kamptee, Hingna, Wadi, Khapri, Butibori and Kalmeshwar. Nagpur is 837 kms fromMumbai, 1094 kms south of Delhi, 1092 kms north of Chennai and 1140 kms west of Calcutta.
The town is dominated by the British fort built in 1818 on the twin hills of Sitabuldi in thecentre of the city. Nagpur is known for its greenery and was adjudged the cleanest and secondgreenest in India after Chandigarh in 2010. There is Gorewada reservoir with a dam 2,350 ft. longwhich supplies water to the city. There are several old lakes like Shukrawari, Ambazari andTelankhedi in and around the city. Similarly, rivers like Kanhan and Pench flow through center ofthe region, the Wardha in the west, and the Wainganga in the east", Both these rivers merge astributaries into river Godavari. The soil is fertile black (cotton) in the west and the north, and alluvialin the east.

disconnected patches. Almost half of the district in its western and southern parts is occupiedby the Deccan Trap comprising 60m thick pile of basaltic flows of Cretaceous to Paleoceneage (60 - 62 m.y.). At places, lntertrappean (sedimentary) beds separate the individual flows.Isolated la capping- are found around Kondhali. Alluvial deposits of Pleistocene to Recentage arc found Kan han, Jam, W unna and Sur rivers.
Nagpur district is well known for its economic mineral deposits, particularlymanganese. About 55 manganese ore deposits have been explored. Some of the importantdeposits are located at Gumgaon, Ramdongri. Kondegaon, Kandri, Sarat, Mansur, Lohdongri,Kachurwahi, Waregaon, Bhandarbodi, Mauegaon, Mandekasa and Hiwra, The other mineraldeposits found are copper at and Parsori in Umrcr tahsil and tungsten at Agargaon in Umrertahsil. Important coalfields are located in Kamthi and Umrer areas. Clay deposits associatedwith rocks of Kamthi Formation are located at 21 km east of Nagpur and 21 km northeast ofSavner. Limestone, calcitic marble and dolomitic marble deposits are found at Katta, Hiwara,Kadbikhcra. Sarkaritola, Pauni, Chorbaoli, Deolapar, Mansar, Chargaon, Kachurwahi,Junewani, Kardi and Dahoda.
