continued from page 1 The International Organization for Standardization (150) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies, incorporating the American, Euro Norm (EN) and British Standards (BS). ISO was formed to establish international standards for increasing global trade, and is a network of the national standards institutes of 159 countries.
Factory Mutual Global (FM) is a worldwide insurance company, and products that are "FM Approved" have passed testing criteria of the Factory Mutual Research Corporation.
Summary: Today's tank codes, standards, and regulations have been driven by a need for standardization, safety, and environmental concerns. These standards have been instrumental in creating a measure of reliability for water storage, petroleum storage and combustible/flammable liquid storage. The chart above provides the information necessary to compare and consider the common design alternatives.
Footnotes: * Some bolted design codes (API 12B, ISO 28765, LPCB and BS 5502) do not have explicit formulas for net section or bolt shear and give design guidelines
Standards Publications and Notes:
API Codes published by the American Petroleum Institute
BS are British Standards
AVVVVA Codes published by the American Water Works Association
EN are European Standards (European Norm) NFPA 22 published by the National Fire Protection Association (US) ISO Standards are published by the International Organization for Standardization
or actual sheet thicknesses for a specific tank size. In such cases, the values shown are derived from stress limits set by that code.
Factory Mutual Global is a worldwide insurance company
AISC is the American Institute For Steel Construction
C-650B is a deSign specification developed and utilized by CST Industries which is the bolted structural design equivalent of API-650
ESPCI is an internal design specification developed and utilized by Engineered Storage Products Division of CST Industries
CTT Standards is an internal design specification developed and utilized by Columbian TecTank, Division of CST Industries
** ISO 28765 is a Limit State Design Code. The values shown for Hoop Tension are Allowable Stress Design values derived from the code to allow comparison to the other codes shown.
